Jaffe loves PS3 exclusivity more than audience expansion photo

Twisted Metal won't be coming to the Xbox 360. Obviously not, since Sony owns the game's license. Still, even if creator David Jaffe could put it on the 360, he apparently would not. According to the developer, giving the PS3 exclusives is more rewarding than expanding his potential audience.

"No, we will not be making it for the 360," Jaffe told a 360-owning fan. "The only thing we’d love more than getting the game out there to as many players as possible -- via putting it on new systems -- is to continue helping Sony differentiate their box from other boxes. We love our 360s and Wiis and iPads but TM is Sony owned and made just for PS3 users."

While this news may have disappointed Twisted Metal fans who lack a PS3, Jaffe played Santa to at least one of them. Sony Santa Monica and Eat Sleep Play actually sent one Twisted Metal fan a PS3, just so he could play the game when it launches next year.

That's pretty classy ... but I hope you brought enough PS3s for the whole class, David.

I understand this mentality in that Twisted Metal is a Sony property, but his stance is ridiculous. Let me not make money and keep my business going just so I can help Sony, a company who doesn't need me. Has Jaffe lost his head?

Breaking news! The PS3 has exclusives. As does the 360. More at 11.

TM might be interesting, but it's hardly the type of exclusive I'd use to tout the system, which is pretty much the only reason this statement would be made in the first place. This game really only exists to cater to the somehow-still-loyal-to-an-essentially-forgotten-franchise group, I doubt newcomers will spare more than a passing glance at it. And that group already has...get ready for it...PS3's.

So basically this entire post basically invalidates itself.

The Twisted Metal name hasn't really been "good" since 2 - I wouldn't even count Black, as it wasn't SO good that it made us forget 3 and 4.

Either way, Jaffe is an idiot for alienating multiple fanbases - and he looks like even more of an idiot after Schafer just came out and said how he'd love to work on on consoles.

"INSTEAD OF SELLING MY GAME TO A CUSTOMER BASE OF 100 MILLION I WILL SELL IT TO 20 MILLION".

I wish more of his explanation centered on how he can make a better game by focusing on one piece of hardware and an audience he's more familiar with, because I think that's the case. I don't like hearing it in terms of "It's better for Sony" rather than being better for him or the game.

I'm pretty stoked, no matter the case. Also, incoming "nerf helicopters"

I kind of agree with a desire to have console exclusives to give them some identity. In a time when the lines between what each console offers is blurring since they are all vying for slices of the same audience (everyone needs some motion control) I enjoy the exclusives. Anything that keeps game libraries for consoles from being completely homogenized is ok in my book.

What is it with you people moaning about what David Jaffe said? Twisted Metal always has been a Sony property and always will be, so the idea of it even appearing on other consoles is a moot point. It's the same as if Miyamato said not to expect Mario or Zelda on a Sony console - he's just stating what's plainly obvious.

Well, he came from SCEA and had worked for internal Sony owned studios... and his current, new studio has a multi-game deal with Sony (read: Sony is providing the dollars) so is this really any surprise?

Finally being an independent studio simply means they have the opportunity to create non-Sony console games... but they have financial/legal obligations to fill first and it makes sense that they would retain a loyalty to Sony.

Oh... and I'm not a fan of the Twisted Metal series, but Eat, Sleep, Play also got a lot of people from Incognito who made Warhawk... so I do wish them every success!
(and I wish the rest of the Incog crew that went to Lightbox would get their asses in gear and announce the next Warhawk game!)

Not even the same thing. Final Fantasy is a third party property. Twisted Metal always has been published by Sony. It's as surely an eternal Sony exclusive as Mario is to Nintendo or Halo is to Microsoft.

Even though I disagree with his reasoning, I own all three systems, so I'm generally fine with exclusives. (In fact, more often than not, they turn out to be my favorite games/franchises for each system... Mario, Gears, Uncharted, and so on.)

Still, I've never liked Twisted Metal, and I really doubt this new one will change that. If 13-year-old mrandydixon couldn't get into it, I really doubt so-called-adult mrandydixon will.

I actually agree with him a little bit. Multi-system releases will inevitably end up costing more in producing a title than you would versus releasing it on one platform. Plus if you focus on just one system when developing a game, you have more time to polish things up and release a very good product (ex: Uncharted) versus releasing something on multiple consoles and having issues on other platforms (ex: Black Ops on PS3 and PC)

Plus if you have a multisystem release that flops, thing about how much more it can hurt. It's all a double edged sword.

because you already know that twisted metal is meant to be in the PS3

I was giving an example - thanks for the nice comment!

We know that the Wii has outsold both the Xbox 360 and PS3. It is reasonable to assume that by selling to the 360 and Wii, you are increasing your audience by at least five-fold - especially considering 360s are outselling PS3s worldwide on top of the Wii's dominance.

So yes - the PS3 is ranked 3/3 in terms of sales.

I feel like Sony's pulling his little puppet strings, because exclusivity really doesn't make sense from his point of view. A game developer should want as many people to play his creation as possible, and if not for the reason of getting your work out there, at least to make more money. He didn't really explain himself, either. He basically said "I like exclusivity because it's exclusive", it;s just- it doesn't make sense to me.

Hey, man .. you know that article actually says the opposite of you're saying? "But globally PlayStation is selling faster". Maybe you linked the wrong thing?

If you'd said that the 360 has sold more units, that would have been accurate, but the PS3 has a higher sales rate, and has moved like 150k+ units more a month over its shorter lifetime.

Are we reading the same article?

The article I linked says that 360s are currently in more homes than PS3.

That was my entire point. Jaffe is alienating at least 5 million people (that we know of) - in addition to the Wii market (which is just massive).

I'm not talking about "what might be" - I'm saying right now, around when Twisted Metal is released, there will be more 360s out there than PS3s. Additionally, the Kinect has sold at least a million more 360s on it's own, but that's another issue.

You said the 360 is outselling the PS3, which is the opposite of what the article said. That is not the same as "the 360 has sold more units", which appears to be what you meant to say. Two very different things.

You're right about the install base still being larger for the 360, though, even if the differential is shrinking. My guess is that developers like signing exclusivity contracts because the money is guaranteed; that is, they still get paid even if the game is a flop.

Wow so much hate, before you start slinging mud, Jaffe follows up on Twitter and explains WHY he prefers to work with Sony, basically Sony caters to the DEVELOPERS, look at all the indie devs praising Sony for giving them the freedom to create their game properly. Valve and Hello Games share those sentiments, while criticizing M$ for their mandates with Xbox Live...you could say that Jaffe doesn't want to sellout, you guys are so blinded by money, huh?

I think you completely misunderstand David Jaffes mentality. The man is a fucking nutjob. No disrespect, that makes him amazing at his job, and able to come up with some absolutely amazing games, but he is a few steel plates short of an ocean liner. So saying that it makes no sense to go with an exclusive because he'd get slightly less money - what makes you think he's motivated solely by money?

And as for "multiplat magically means more money", how much more did God of War III, a Ps3 exclusive, sell than Dantes Inferno, a game on damn near everything? Despite the latters marketting blitz?

Look at this game. Hell, look at the screenshots. If people want this game, they will buy a Ps3 for it. No doubt it will be that good.

Some people just don't seem to understand what's going on here. Twisted Metal is owned by Sony and Jaffe likes Sony. That's all there is to it. What is going on the comments is pretty much the same as with Halo (or any other exclusive). Exclusive game developer says something. Opposing force thinks both the console manufacturer and the developer are dicks.

@Magnalon

You know, I read your example as: WE'RE ACTIVISION! GIVE US YOUR MONEY!! I don't really know if that's a good thing.

But yeah, I agree that you'll have a larger audience if you create a certain game for all 3 platforms. I also agree that it would be nice to see certain high-profile games getting a multi-plaform release. But with some games it just doesn't work out. Twisted Metal is one of those games.

If we take the Kinect example you made about the soccer mom buying a 360 because of Kinect (yesterday was it? I'm not sure). Microsoft sold 45.6M consoles, Sony sold 41.6M. Let's say those 4 million extra are 'soccer-mom-360s' They will never ever buy Twisted Metal. Which means Sony and Microsoft are even. I also think it's safe to assume that Twisted Metal just isn't a Wii game. Even if it came out of the Wii it wouldn't sell more than on the PS3.

Let's do an easy calculation based on your example.
Halo: Reach - 6.27 million copies sold on the 360. We're going to release it on all 3 consoles. Lets see how many copies they could sell:

Wii: 76.6 - 46.8%
360: 45.6 - 27.8%
PS3: 41.6 - 25.4%
(Millions of consoles sold worldwide)
(p.s. that is a 2.4% difference between Sony and Microsoft, what the hell are we talking about?)

Wii - 6.27/27.8*46.8= 10.56
PS3 - 6.27/27.8*25.4= 5.73

Holy hell that would mean 22.56 copies! Don't tell Activision, they might buy Bungie. Or have they done that already?

I know this example is way too easy, but but the same goes for your example. Basically all I'm saying is that you can't compare hardware sales with software sales that easily. You need to know everything about every console owner. I own a PS3 and I don't think I'm going to buy Twisted Metal. If I get a 360 I will not buy Halo: Reach but I will get Mass Effect in a heartbeat.

@9thgenhero
Your comment makes a lot of sense. There never is just a quote, there is a story behind the quote.

I am pre-supposing that the new Twisted Metal has mass appeal, and will sell across all platforms.

Take a game like Mass Effect for example. Cutting out a console by choice is alienating a large chunk of your profits. Taking money from Microsoft and basically guaranteeing those sales is one thing. But Jaffe is basically mouthing off and not taking that into account.

Your example makes perfect sense, but you should also account for people who buy a lot of their multiplatform games on 360 instead (like myself or Blasto, because more friends play on 360) - which would take up a higher percentage than pre-supposing everyone who owns both consoles would only buy it on PS3.

Magnalon, all assumptions and (weird) examples aside I don't know about Twisted Metal's mass appeal but I am getting kinda curious now. Just so I can release my awesome mathematical skills again. And maybe it will even sell a whole bunch of PS3's so a future release will have a larger base. It's all guessing. But combined with what he said on Twitter (I stopped following him, he's weird) I think he's right on sticking with Sony. Not that he could do something else with Twisted Metal but still. It's just his opinion. He'll make more than enough money.

Also all my friends buy multi-platform on PS3. I guess that's why they're my friends! Ha!

I wish I could continue our healthy discussion but I need to get some sleep. I have to get up in about 6 hours. I had some cases I would like to know your opinion on. Maybe I should write a blog again. Haven't done that in quite some time. Later!

From Jaffe's twatter:
"Holy fuck, Destructoid Xbox only owners out in full force against me. WTF? I can't have an opinion? It's not that we would not LOVE to have our games in every home in the world...even the ones w/out electricity. Fuck it- we don't care! It's just that we value our relationship with Sony very, very much. They give us extra time to make the game great, lots of creative and marketing and business support. And we like the people over there tons; they are like family. Why is it so hard to understand we'd like 2 stay in that kind of working relationship?"
