It may not matter to those already familiar with the franchise, but it would be a good way to bring in new players. As someone unaccustomed to the series, I'd definitely be more inclined to pick up the game if it had a darker tone, like it had in the last iteration.
Actually, no. If you read the article, it's pretty clear that the reason they are aiming for a T-rated game is because they want more people of different ages to play it. Adding a dark tone won't help this one bit. Your logic makes no sense.

I know you only saw the cutscenes, which could be very misleading. The story elements of Black make the game look like some sort of Manhunt clone, a 'badd-@ss' action game with lots of 'hard-core' stuff like blood and more blood.
But the Twisted Metal franchise has never deviated from its intial concept: a high-speed demolition derby with Mad Max vehicles and impossible weapons. It really feels more like an arcade game. Fast, breezy fun that's over quick. Injecting a bunch of snuff films inbetween the levels just prolongs the wait to unleash hell on your opponent's ugly car/tank. Waiting is not fun.
Just look at the NFS:Underground games. Anyone remember the names of the 'characters' you raced? Nope. Vehicle based games do not need a story. They need to be fast and fun and give you dirty tactics that challenge the limits of friendship.
It won my money right there, and no ESRB rating is gonna change that.
Man Warthog in TMB was amazing. Stop making your audience more broad! Geez!!!!!!!! Games like that come out once in a decade. A true waste.
@Hardock
When this game sells 1.5 million I'm going to have sex with your mother. Do we have a deal?
Good times. Of course, all of those probably apply to other games, but what would I know about those? :P
If the game is great, it'll sell to everyone no matter what. Ask the 12 year olds on CoD how hard it was to pick up their copy.
That would be my main gripe with a Teen title, seems like a cop-out. Like they don't think it'll sell well, so might as well market it to everybody. Worked for Mortal Kombat vs DC, didn't it? Oh wait....
Good point. I guess I was exposed to the story and nothing but. No gameplay. I guess I could understand them sacrificing that relatively unimportant aspect of their game to reach a wider audience.
@Bolduk
I was simply trying to say that the darker imagery (or as I perceived it) would get someone like me to try the series without having any previous experience in it. That someone like me is disappointed in its absence, and less likely to pick up the game. I can't blame the developers for making this choice.
I dunno if comparing MW2 and Twisted Metal is a good idea. Sure your point makes sense but at the same time they are very different genres. Car combat genre is not popular (as of right now), so the market for it is probably much smaller than the potential market for any M rated FPS. So lowering the rating to a T is a very good idea because they probably want to aim at a demographic of kids between 10 and 17 or so. Naturally Im not saying anyone who buys the game will be that age. Im 22 and I intend to buy the game. I dont think an M rating will kill Twisted Metal, I think its crazy over the top action gameplay will still be intact and from what I have seen it pretty much is.
Also, RE: Spiffy - Whoa, really? I can't imagine this game NOT selling more than a million!
Not cause disturbing content but just cause all the levels seemed to have the dark and gritty colors...
but still i just Go crazy for any twisted metal and the new ones maps seem to be less dark wich i like.
