Jack Thompson to debate at the Game Developer's Conference? photo

It's possible that our favorite attorney will be making an appearance at the GDC to reprise his recent debate at this year's VGXPO, where he had it out with Lorne Lanning. GamePolitics found this news in a motion filed by Thompson with the U.S. District Court in Florida. Good eye, guys!

From the motion:

Because of the quality and coherence of my presentation, I was then asked by the GDC to reprise the Philadelphia debate, this time in February in San Francisco in a 5000 seat arena, as the keynote event.

Jacko at the GDC? At the keynote event? Really? Nothing has been confirmed yet, and the GDC Web site has no mention of Thompson's appearance, but you can be sure that all of the arena's seats will be filled. I'll see you there -- don't forget your tomatoes.

I would like to see him treated respectfully and matched with someone articulate and knowledgeable. And then let him get slammed in the debate. That's the only way to really defeat him.

Can we please stop giving this man attention?

If we dont pay attention to him maybe he will cease to exist

I hope he goes and gets completely shut down in the debate by his opponent who buries both him and his point further into the earth than the Dr. Strangelove fallout shelter.

Now where can I buy a giant foam middle finger?

I agree completely, surf. If you're going to whip his ass, do it intelligently and respectfully (even though hi isn't).

I truly want to see him get raped all over the place (no homo).

I think events like this will bring him down to earth. He wont be able to spew off his version of the facts to make him sound like a wize man of video games.

Honestly if I was there I would tell him that if video games make kids violent whats would be your excuse. Since you started this crusade you have lied and used your son to get violent games and most of all are you that hard up to be on TV? Is video games the cause for this to? I might be stretching it a little but nothing compared to what he does on a media daily basis.

No it will not bluewolf, I remember hearing this podcast where he was invited to talk about his latest endeavors and believe me, he lives in a planet of his own.

I think the main difference between us and him is if we heard evidence concrete evidence of video games turning kids into depraved halfling monsters we would be the first people to try and help keeping the world safe by preventing kids from getting a hold on this poison candy. But we grew up with them and we are fine, and we can recognize the difference between the games that are fine and not fine for kids and the maturity levels necessary for the different games. There is a game store by my house that I frequent/live at and I can share two stories that I think will enlighten Mr. Thompson if he was open minded.

There was a woman in there with her kid about 12 who wanted the Orange Box. She was asking the clerk about the content and whether it was appropriate for him and the clerk was explaining that it seems he was at the threshold and it really comes down to his maturity. I added it has a lot of horror elements and felt pleased with my contribution. He said the best thing is to rent it and sit down with him while he plays and see how comfortable she feels and how he handles the content. She said she often did that and was talking about Bioshock and how she thought it was pretty intense but was comfortable with how her kid handled it so she didn't worry too much.

The other story was relayed to me by an incredulous clerk. He said he just had a woman in there who was yelling at him because their store carries a game where you raise a virtual child. She said it encourages teenage pregnancy and that "he should be ashamed of himself."

Now of the two who do you think was the more effective parent? Who do you think JT is more like?

I just hope he doesn't try using the exact same line (the one about how he defended some family in some GTA court case) that gamers have heard a million times before and has no real relevance to any discussion.

This is a toughy: I think it would be a legendary discussion, but on the other hand, I kind of agree with CaffienePowered. How would we benefit from this as an industry? What would get accomplished from such a debate? Would we able to change his mind? I doubt it.
