Jack Thompson to appear at ScrewAttack Convention photo

Jack. Jackie. Wacko Jack-o. Jackie Boy. I haven't decided what I'll call him when I hang out with him in Dallas this summer. J-dogg?

Oh, what? You didn't know we were tight? Okay, we're not really hanging out. But he and I will be in the same building! Ooh! There are definite perks to this job!

Our favorite game hater will be appearing live at the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention on July 4th where he will participate in a live debate with Mark Menthentis, Joystiq's legal columnist. They'll have it out on the topic of videogame restrictions. There will also be a pre-screened Q&A panel for Thompson, so if you're going, have your questions ready.

ScrewAttack's Craig Skistimas.:

We’re extremely excited to welcome such a controversial figure in the gaming world and provide a venue for a debate that is sure to create fireworks for many people this Fourth of July.
Fireworks indeed. So, we're going, Jackie-poo is going, Nolan Bushnell is going -- hell, everyone is going. Are you?

Yeah, except that Jack Thompson's type of firework is the kind that seems to be nothing special until it explodes and then dumps shit on everyone who's watching. Memorable, I'm sure, but not in a way that people will enjoy.

I thought making him a legitimate voice in the debate over video games was the LAST thing we wanted to do? I was hoping he would just slink back into the shadows after being disbarred.

I have been really considering in going there and in my opinion this Jack Thompson thing could be really interesting.

Personally, I think a debate on a level playing field is a great idea. Let's face it, whether we like it or not, he's going to keep spouting off on TV, posing as an "expert", and the media will lend him credibility. When he offers his biased views on TV, there's very rarely anyone to counter his views with actual evidence. By doing an actual moderated debate, we're able to more accurately hear both sides of the story, instead of only hearing the side that Fox News or other media outlets want us to hear. As long as both sides are capable of keeping things civil, I'm all for it.

I hope this winds up on the internet somewhere. If not, I humbly request that you liveblog it for us, Dale.

You need to give airtime to both sides of an issue. Maybe he'll start ranting like a lunatic and discredit himself, saving all of us the trouble. I really don't understand his personal politics on all of this, I don't know who he's trying to protect. It really only seems like he's out there to put a monkey-wrench in the collective spokes of happy people.

Nice pearly-whites, JT.

Meh, the gaming community feeds off that controversy as much as Jack does. It's not going to be a good debate any more than past debates have been. It will end the same way, and gamers like to here it, like tabloid material. You're never going to have an unbiased debate in the situation of video games, because people who likes games play them, and people who don't, won't touch them. It's not a level playing field already because it's a gaming convention. Fox News and other media outlets that speak bad of games are no different than sites like Destructoid, which are just as biased from the other end. People get influenced, good and bad, by everything; from friends, family, employees, teachers to books, tv, music, and yes, even games. Thats life. Both sides want to remain on their side of the fence and force the other person to come over. People end up in arguments, and why? Because they like it; everyone likes to argue.

Sorry, I really don't see this being legitimate in any way other than as shock entertainment. It's like going back in time to have a moderated debate with Hitler over Jewish rights. Entertaining? Certainly. A credible, meaningful dialouge between two opposing viewpoints? Come on...

Am I the only one who think this is a bad idea? It reeks of LOOK AT US! LOOK!

This would be better if they had someone CREDIBLE show up for the debate. : /

PBC interviewed Jack and Lorne Lanning after their hour-long debate at 2007 VGXPO. I gotta say, Jack came off as a really calm, collected activist, while Lorne got fired up and dumped a lot of allegations in J.T.'s lap. Allegations that 100% of the audience agreed with, and cheered for.

I'm surprised he's doing this. Doesn't he know gamers like to shoot people in the head? Doesn't sound like the safest place for him to be.

I can see this going like when Jim Sterling talked to him on Podcastle. Whenever the opposite of what he wants to hear begins to be said you will somehow be interrupting him. I wonder if he will keep repeating himself because gamers obviously cannot comprehend anything without blood or guts....
