Jack Thompson's evil FOX appearance
World Famous04.17.08 - 12:58 PM 124 comments

Remember how I told you Jack "video games are zee devil" Thompson was on FOX News yesterday taking advantage of the Virginia Tech tragedy to push his own agenda? Well, thankfully one of our dedicated readers, Kennigit, sent over the video of the appearance. Take a look and fill your rage meter.

i hope Jack Thompson's kid goes on a crazy school shooting one of these days. That would make everything perfect. Minus the lost of whoever gets killed the world would be off much better.

The problem is that some of Jack's ideals I can get behind. We do have a responsibility to keep games like GTA out of kids that are only 12 years old. But Jack Thompson really takes it one step too far. Why can't he just use truth to push his ideals? Why does he have to lie to blatantly the way he does. How can anybody even be listening to him right now?

The only reason he is getting any press time is because there are so many people that really have no idea what these video games really are. All these older people and parents just know that these kids are playing video games, and Jack Thompson is telling them that video games are the cause.

never mind the fact that crimes have decreased across the country over the last year. or the fact that gun deaths have decreased. and that the amount of people that play video games is skyrocketing. He has no real evidence. If you have 50 million people that play video games and ONE of them goes on a school shooting, that is not representative of the whole. The same goes for the millions of muslims and a handful do suicide bombings. MOST muslims believe that suicide bombing are wrong. MOST people that play video games will never go on a school shooting.

I've been hearing people say "The only way to get rid of Jack Thompson is to stop talking about Jack Thompson."

I say that's bullshit. He has to keep being portrayed as an asshat, and everyone who knows the truth has to do everything they can to make sure everyone in world knows how completely wrong he is. That he's just an opportunist that plays on the fears of the nation. If we don't, then everyone who doesn't know better, or believes everything they see on TV, will believe him and that will just make the problem worse.

People need to be educated, not scared. If we don't take personal responsibility against Jack Thompson's actions, then he just might gain some ground in holy crusade! To us, he's a fool, but to other's he may make sense. Let's let everyone know!!!

Dennen's Avatar
Dennen at 04/17/2007 13:39

I don't see how games like Doom or Grand Theft Auto can possibly "Train" a person to go on a killing rampage.

You cannot walk into a gun shop with a badly programmed cashier, tell him "let me see a gun" snatch it and shoot him with it... There's certain real life protocols and issues that get in the way of these things happen.. The very grasp of reality is what Jack seems to be missing these days.

Doom trains people to kill? Last I felt my mouse, it felt nothing like a gun. There's no safety that'll stop me from clicking anything on my mouse. And I know for damn sure that my PS2 controller doesn't feel like a gun either. If anything has taught me more in the use and handling of firearms, it's the news... As for he who says that these things being glorified on the big screen - such as Dr Phil who also just blamed this situation on Violent Video Games - They're forgetting two things that existed in violence before video games got to this level... TV and Movies.

All I really see lawyers like him doing is one thing. Profiting from the death of others. "Your kid was a homicidal maniac, and he's killed someone? Don't you worry, i'll help get you that grand paycheck to make it all better."

perri's Avatar

Here's the classic tale of 'old people' hating 'new things'.

Look, I think.

Apparently these people don't. They imply that the shooter trained by playing Video Games and that his attack was premeditated- connecting this to the games played...Well I've never heard of any game that takes place in an exact replica of Virginia Tech University. I don't know of any game that requires you to lock doors to trap innocent bystanders in a building so you can go on a rampage. Why can't people see that games imitate life(in some cases) not the other way around. Shootings existed before games, but then they blamed movies...

Hey middle class America, grow some balls and blame yourselves for your fucked up children. There are many gamers all across the world who play these same games, and yet American shootings are highest in the world. How can this correlation hold any merit? It's totally biased, he isn't looking at a wide enough audience, he's using concentrated samples of isolated incidents. You cannot base a solid thesis on these kinds of numbers. Theres a problem with your society Jack, not it's favourite entertainment medium.

Need I remind you about that college debate tour he went on where he encouraged people to wear their "I hate Jack Thompson" t-shirts". He's exploiting your hatred for him...

Now I'm not simply saying ignore him because we can't just give him free reign to do whatever the hell he wants but I think we have talked about the guy WAY too much. Every time he acts up all the major game sites report the hell out of it and JT loves it. Besides, I don't think that our help is needed too much as half the lawsuits he files fail miserably and his attempt to draft laws get shot down. Not only have the judges been shooting down virtually everything he's tried, but he's also managed to make a fool out of him on repeated occasstions. Still I don't think that paying a massive amount of attention to the guy is really very necessary.

I've been playing video games since the NES, and I've also been known to go out target shooting and hunting from time to time. I personally don't see the relation between the two. I'm a pretty damn good shot in GRAW or COD, but when I went out target shooting for the first time in about 5 years my aim was complete and utter shit. Aiming reticules and real gun sights are NOT similar in any way. The way you hold a rifle or pistol is in NO WAY similar to how you hold and operate a controller. Games do NOT help you control your breathing, and they do not steady your hand.

Fuck this motherfucker in his ignorant ass...real world experience would help to curb some of his assumptions about things. I suppose he's worried that if he picked up a controller he might up and decide to kill his whole family.

As hideously misguided as the man is, at this point I almost have to admire his dedication. It's hard to stay dedicated to preposterous ideas, especially ones like his, and his single-mindedness has allowed him to do so. Obviously he really believes everything he's saying, even if most of it is blatantly misguided, misinformed, and incorrect.

So we'll just have to keep doing our duty; correct the fallacies that he is spreading in his cause. One individual cannot give an entire group a bad name unless the group can come up with no reasoning or logic to refute that individual. And so far, gamers as a whole have been doing a pretty great job at providing such reasoning.

Jack can go off on his crusade as long as he wants, it's almost Sisyphisian in nature. He can push the boulder up the hill as many times as he is able, but in the end the weight of fact and reason will roll over him and back down to the level field of logical thinking.

Seriously sorry about the long post but this man never tires of making me sick. Games are not murder simulators, they do not train anybody to kill!
Take Columbine for example (The Massacre that they tried (and failed) to link to doom) - Two months after Carneal carried out the school shootings he was interviewed by Dr. Dewey Cornell, a psychologist who is director of the Virginia Youth Violence project, and Dr. Diane H. Schetky, a forensic psychiatrist.
From the notes:
They thought he had never fired a gun, but they were very wrong. He had learned to shoot while at 4-H camp the summer of his "groundation" and that autumn he had stolen his father's .38-caliber handgun from a box in a closet. Although his father says in the deposition that the gun was securely locked and that it had no ammunition, Michael says (in the notes), "They had it in cheap padlock with combination on the back." He took the gun and hid it in a crate in his room, putting a book in the gun box to make it heavy so no one would know the gun was gone.
Not only that but at least two other students saw him with guns at school before the shootings.
So that rules out video game training, as he already had the real thing to play with.
godofyouall's Avatar

Continued.....

And don't get me started on Jeff Weise and the red lake shootings, the trouble is this post is already way to long.
People should start listening to real experts and not the likes Jack Thompson or Dave Grossman (sorry I know I am soiling this comments section just mentioning their names), these people just distract attention from the real causes and also worryingly use their so called expertise to try to lesser killers sentences.
Someone who is a real expert though is Dr. Helen Smith who is a forensic psychologist in Knoxville, Tennessee. She has evaluated over five thousand mentally-disturbed children and adults, and has become an expert on kids who kill. She did a national survey of violent and nonviolent kids, which means she had the opportunity to hear what kids themselves had to say.
Smith objects to the way many experts blame violent television, mental disturbance (the "bad seed"), video games or some rock group's edgy lyrics for the school killings. Those experts, she contends, aren’t listening to the kids. She believes that violence comes from the accumulation of many distorted thoughts and stressors that finally send a child over the edge. In short, it's the way he or she processes what they see, hear, and experience. Kids who use violence to solve a problem have already had a number of violent thoughts. They perceive their environment and their situation in such a way that violence seems the best mode of action. That is, children who kill are predisposed to kill. They don’t just snap. They have a restricted view of other people’s rights and they feel they must bring their situation to some dramatic conclusion.
godofyouall's Avatar
godofyouall at 04/17/2007 15:33

Continued again.........

While school nerds who were bullied once chose the course of suicide as the way out, now they see another way to take action and get attention: strike out. Using guns and being violent toward others moves them from powerlessness to power, from nobodies to media celebrities.
Obviously the media are going to go with what sells and unfortunately this means that they are always going to go with hype and exaggeration. So it is sadly not surprising when legislators attack fictional and fantasy images of violence portrayed in media products instead of dealing with actual crime.
