Jack Black is one of those guys people have a very distinct reaction to -- they either love him or loathe him. Looking at the picture above, it's sort of a snap to figure out why. Therefore, I am not sure if I bring you good or bad tidings when I say that he has been formally announced as the host of this year's Spike Video Game Awards.
Black is a "huge gamer" as described by Spike, but I think the bigger question at stake is if gamers actually care about formal award ceremonies or not. After all, we're an opinionated bunch, and a golden statue is hardly going to change our opinions of what games we love most -- although it could certainly cause some argument. But then again, that's what gamers seem to like to do best...

(RECORRECT) Colette (HAHA, GOT IT RIGHT HIS TIME!) I ruv oo....but I wish I could get paid to voice my opinion over top a press release....
Again, I ruv oo....... read more
I fall into the loathe side.
I agree with Neonie, Spike's show is complete garbage and huge step back for the industry, especially when we want to be taken seriously.
And as for the paid off, I remember quite a few years ago that True Crime won awards when it hadn't even come out, so very much paid off indeed.
Hell yes to the Brütal Legend preview! It'll be great to see this game finally.
Also, I'm sure Activision and any interested publishers are going to be very carefully watching the public's reaction to this one.
@Neonie. The spike VGA's are a marketing vehicle, nothing more. I agree that a genuine peer-awards show would be fantastic, though. You know, if we collectively worked the Dtoid muscle, we could probably put on something respectable. Start as a webcast from a convention (say Pax?) and go from there.
I like Jack Black, but I really don't care about Spike's VGA thingy anyways. But I do agree with Neonie and solidgoomba, I watched part of the VGA spike show one year and didn't like for the reasons both goomba and neonie listed already.
I like Jack Black (to an extent), but this doesn't change my opinion about this anyway. Spike's VGA is basically one long commercial. Didn't they give awards to games that didn't come out before?
They should get Liam Lynch of Sifl and Ollie fame(kinda). He's a buddy of Jables, and a huge gamer as well.Of course,I respect anyone a little more if I find out that they like Morrowind, which Lynch does. :)
God I fucking hate Spike TV. What a waste of time that channel is. Star Trek reruns and dumb action movies all day long... oh and maybe some old clip shows about people crashing boats. Makes for really compelling programming.
while Day of the Tentacle and Psychonauts are fucking great, i don't give a fuck about brutal legend, they have to show me alot more than . . . nothing, if they want me to be excited.
No one can destroy the Metal
The Metal will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of the Metal
We tried to win for why we do not know...
I like JB, and I can't stand Spike's VGAs. The last time I watched it the only game that wasn't made by an American developer that even got mentioned was RE4. Granted it got game of the year or something.
This is gonna be the first year I watch them because I wanna see the new Fight Night...I probably still won't watch it and just end up watching that segment the next day on youtube or something...
I hate these dumb award shows, they are pretty much just popularity contests and I bet if another halo came out this year that was crap it would still win game of the year because most people who only play the popular games don't know what a good game is.
Also, video games are a lot like music and any other form of "art". It's all based on user opinion and as long as it is like that there can never really be a "Game of the Year" because it all honestly it probably doesn't even deserve it. Drakes fortune didn't even get nominated for best graphics at the last show and IMO it had the best graphics at the time.

Jables is the man, so...good news, I guess? I'm not going to be watching either way.
i probably dont have to ask, but:
why is his nose bleeding?

Yes I am one of the few who loathe Jack Black.

And this is supposed to make me watch them?
I like Jack Black, but I really don't care about Spike's VGA thingy anyways. But I do agree with Neonie and solidgoomba, I watched part of the VGA spike show one year and didn't like for the reasons both goomba and neonie listed already.

meh.. might watch
@J03yyz: Snorting cocaine will do that to you.
JB is awesome (especially when he teams up with KG to form The D), but I won't be watching this crap.
They should get Liam Lynch of Sifl and Ollie fame(kinda). He's a buddy of Jables, and a huge gamer as well.Of course,I respect anyone a little more if I find out that they like Morrowind, which Lynch does. :)
BRUTAL. FUCKING. LEGEND.
Spike just earned itself one more viewer.
If they actually show anything on Brutal Legend, I might actually watch. Tim Schafer is my god.
I REALLLY hope cage makes an appearance!
Dude, Brutal Legend gameplay? Finally? Count me in.
I lost all respect for the Spike VGAs last year when Mario Galaxy wasn't even nominated for GOTY.
Now I see that this year Mario Kart isn't nominated for best Wii game, but Boom Blox and Wii Fit are.
moar Brutal Legend makes me happy. I really want to play that game.
God I fucking hate Spike TV. What a waste of time that channel is. Star Trek reruns and dumb action movies all day long... oh and maybe some old clip shows about people crashing boats. Makes for really compelling programming.
Let me guess the winners are guitar hero3, call of duty, and madden? So fucking lame, I agree with all of the above.
No, we don't care about formal awards shows. Just don't tell Ron that.
I'm a big fan of Jack Black. I thought last year's Spike TV awards were a joke, and had no plans of watching it again.... until now.
@Dexter345
Fuck the awards, they have FUCKING BRUTAL LEGEND! That's all I care about.
The only thing i care it's the God of war III gameplay that they are going to show in that... ceremony :$
Wow, im still stunned how many people cream themselves over a game that we've seen zero gameplay from.
@SephirothX
C'mon, it's Tim Schafer. The man hasn't made a bad game. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Sam Jackson just got a big FUCK YOU from Spike TV. Jack Black is the fucking tits.
~facepalm~
while Day of the Tentacle and Psychonauts are fucking great, i don't give a fuck about brutal legend, they have to show me alot more than . . . nothing, if they want me to be excited.
BRUTAL LEGEND LIVESSSS!!!!!
Also God of War III!!!
Damn shame its the Spike VGA's

I probably won't watch.
WTF is a Spike VGA.
@shadowcast: I've seen this acronym everywhere, and not knowing is driving me crazy. What the fuck does WTF mean, anyway?
I'll watch all the new footage of games later online.
Jack Black is hilarious, too bad I have no channels..LOL
Cage, come here, I want you!
Brutal Legend and Jack Black on television, hell yes! Damnit, I 'm hi-jacking a cable T.V. to watch this.
spike awards=bullshit
even jb can't change the fact that these awards are not worth the paper their written on.
Spike FAILS
This is gonna be the first year I watch them because I wanna see the new Fight Night...I probably still won't watch it and just end up watching that segment the next day on youtube or something...
I'll catch one of the reruns if I hear good things about the show, otherwise, I've already passed.
I hate these dumb award shows, they are pretty much just popularity contests and I bet if another halo came out this year that was crap it would still win game of the year because most people who only play the popular games don't know what a good game is.
