Iwata: Wii 2 needs more than HD photo

Despite Nintendo's endless denials, talk about a Wii HD refuses to settle down. Now Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has enterd the fray, claiming that even if a Wii 2 did release with hi-definition compatibility, that would not be enough to on its own.

"If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition -- just making it compatible with high resolution -- will get players throughout the world to buy it," declares the Nintendo bigwig, "I would of course say, 'Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.'"

So, the basic messages seems to be that when the Wii 2 ships, it won't just be a waggle box with prettier graphics. We have no way of knowing what hair brained nonsense Nintendo will cook up next, but we reckon it might be one of those toy ovens with slightly warm lights that you're supposed to make really terrible cakes with.

You are an angry, sullen little man, Jim Sterling. You should hug a panda watch some cat videos or something.

Perhaps Nintendo are looking into Real 3D tv compatibilty, along side HD and SD, for Wii 2.

HD is just the minimum it requires in the next generation. Somehow all the consoles will be a generation too late in an aspect and Nintendo is only up the visuals.

I hope they introduce an account based online system.

"HD" doesn't necessarily mean "prettier" graphics (high polycounts, bump mapping, hdr and the like) but simply a higher screen resolution. I think thats what he's talking about...

So the real question is what Nintendo will do next generation that Sony and MS will immediately imitate?

Iwata is just saying that Wii 2 won't be the same as the Wii 1, just with an option for outputting in 720p or 1080p. Because that's really what HD is. We associate it with high-end graphics, which benefit most from it, but you can put anything in an HD signal, and that is what Iwata is referring to - that it won't just be that. It probably will have better graphics.

give it a big hardware update (storage, HD capability/connectivity, faster proecessors), backward compatibility, and most importantly - MARKET IT TOWARD GAMERS!!!

if this happened, all the shovelware and cheap kiddie games could stay on wii, alleviating wii2 from receiving the same crappy stigma the original retains.

Well isn't this exactly what everyone wants? People keep saying it can't just be a HD upgrade to the Wii and now Nintendo is saying that themselves, but some people seems to be upset overt that. Which I don't get why though!

It seems people just get mad at Nintendo no matter what they do anymore and now they even get mad at what Nintendo hypothetically says they're going to do in the future. Even though its exactly what the people want them to do in the first place. So Nintendo just can't win with these people, because they're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't!

I think he's being coy. Nintendo had a massive surge in their R&D funding last year. There will be a Wii HD, but he's right, there will be something more.

I doubt that Nintendo would ever just try and imitate it's competitors. They're always a generation lacking in something in order to include something ridiculous. :P

I'd DEFINITELY buy Wii 2 if it had an oven. That's two basic human needs fulfilled - gaming and hunger.
All we need now is a pull out truckle bed and sUpA-dElUxXxX portable porcelain throne, and the Wii become the saviour of mankind!! WOOHOO!!!

I don't think the next nintendo system would have to be crazy. Up the graphics to 360 and ps3 levels or a bit higher not too much, keep the motion control, have hd, but if they wanna do something different they should revisit the power glove and have something like that replace the wii mote. :-D

I think what Iwata's saying is that he understands that the system needs more than just HD visuals. It also needs a proper online setup to match the other systems, along with their already stellar lineup.

I don't know why people think it instantly means Nintendo's going to dump some other huge gimmick on top of everything. They want to appease you people and you just take a dump all over them.

Oh my god.

It's a baby -- AND a clown. Two terrifying nightmares that have become one. I am off to horrify people with this image, straightaway.

Oh also - you may jest, but I think a gaming system with an EZ bake oven in it would do alright. At least all that wasted heat energy would go to some use. Plus, you know -- cake!!! Think about it.

Jeez, why does Nintendo have to be shit upon because they want to be different from the norm? It's obvious Sony and Microsoft dig Nntendos ideas. I think thats great that they want to do more than just add HD visuals. Maybe that means better online. Maybe it means something we haven't even thought of yet. Either way Sterling will shit on it.

I don't think the current Wii needed HD when it launched, but it's definitely a necessity now. I'm glad they realize that.

Nintendo shouldn't give up. They just need to vastly improve their systems to keep up with the competition.
They really need to up their laser, too. A huge disappointment arose when I put in my Metroid Prime Trilogy and it didn't work. It made me very sad. :(

I don't use a HD tv for gaming myself and I use a Wii and occasionally an XBOX360 and I get really annoyed with the small text issue that plagues xbox360 many games. I love Trials HD but can barely make out what the times I have to beat are. So if Wii game makers started HD Wii games then those of us without HD tv will suffer.
