Iwata: Nintendo out of original ideas

Iwata: Nintendo out of original ideas photo

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has declared that Nintendo has used up all the ideas it had for the Wii when it was first envisioned, and that Wii Music represents the last fresh idea on the Wii's menu.

"Wii Music completes what Miyamoto wrote in his proposal when he came up with the idea for the Wii," Iwata told the Wall Street Journal. "He was saying that he needs to think up more ideas now."

"Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now. We might think up some more, and we might make them if we do, but we don't have any plans to release a whole lot more."

I said last year that beyond Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl that there didn't seem to be a lot more in Nintendo's bag of goodies. Wii Music was announced a year ago, and now that it's out, it seems to be at the vanguard of a very shallow 2008 release schedule. At least we know that the Mario and Zelda teams are at work, and that Pikmin 3 is on the horizon, though you'd hardly call those signs of originality. Hopefully Miyamoto's creative well hasn't run too dry, but Wii Music makes me fear for his brain sometimes.

Iwata is with Nintendo, not Square Enix.

Isn't Satoru Iwata Nintendo's president?

What the fuck? Why the fuck did I say Square Enix?

Note to self: Do not write stories when you just woke up.

Is it just me or does the term "Square Enix chief Satoru Iwata " seem rather odd? ^^

Besides that I'd say that he is pretty much right. There hasn't been a whole lot of news about new innovative projects from Nintendo. But the again who is he to talk, as Jim already pointed out.

Nintendo seems to have always just stuck to their roots, they may not be original ideas but I still have fun. Sometimes being original isn't all that great, I mean look at punk rockers.

so was this said by the president of square-enix or Iwata? That cheap shot(well deserved mind you) confuses me into what person you my be referring to.

So... I take it that it's time for Nintendo to make edgier, grittier Mario games?

All I saw was the comment about accessories. Because that's exactly what the world needs, more bits of plastic.

Maybe now they can focus on making games for gamers again? You know, now that they're out of ideas for "new, blue ocean" shit?

Cos I would really like a new, tough Zelda, that does something different, ala Majora's Mask.

Yeah, I guess Nintendo will have to go back to making stale, unoriginal games that are actually fun.

Make a baby simulator. It will simulate the frustration and anger of all of Nintendo's customers as well as all those N-execs who thought that this might not be just another wagglefest (as is apparently the popular term, sort of).

I can wait. I would like to believe that they actually do have a number of new ideas but their fruition is only in adolescence.

Hopefully nintendo have learned to listen to there screaming masses. rather than attempt to listen hear a trillion jizzing fanboys screaming "zelda" in pre-pubescant shrieks, then actually give them what they want ... rather than a DS guide to your local airport.

this seems to be more of a humble japanese thing to me. I doubt Miyamoto after this many decades of creating hit games has suddenly hit the roof of his ideas.

The accessories thing is what gets me. I'm just trying to figure out what other doohickey they can slap on the wiimote will be. I think they're a bit tapped on accessory ideas now. They already have the hands and feet covered with wiimotes and balance boards.

To me the game that was released recently(not much) and felt the most zelda-ish was shadow of the colossus.
Don't ask me why I feel that way

First, I don't think we'll ever have to worry about Miyamoto running out of original ideas. I'm not one to geek out over anyone in particular, but Miyamoto has been the most influential man in the industry since Donkey Kong.

Whether you're a fan of the Wii or not, it's a really important console for the industry. The Wii is reaching out to entirely new demographics and helping the industry grow like nothing before. Is it for the "core gamer," probably not. But, the core gamers still have options in the 360 and PS3. The more new gamers the Wii brings into the fold, the more "core gamers" there will be in the future.

While the Wii may not have a ton of games that appeal to the readers of this site, I'm still really happy with my purchase. It's nice to take a break from the 360 and play some simple, fun games on the Wii. There's a certain feeling of relaxing nostalgia that I get with many Wii titles that really puts me at ease.

Its just like they said when asked about a new Super Smash game, Nintendo hasn't had a brand new Franchise in years, no new ones on the Wii. Excuse me if I'm wrong but, the newest Nintendo Franchise is Pikmin. Even then, that was the newest one in a while.

I think Miyamoto just needs to take a break. The dude has been reusing ideas for awhile now. Give some new blood at Nintendo a chance to come up with the next big franchise. God knows they need one.

Aren't most companies out of new ideas? It feels like for every 100 sequels and look-alike FPSs we get one Echochrome or Portal.

At least they realize the fact and are willing to openly admit and address it. They're still striving for innovation, and while I understand they don't make games that appeal to me personally anymore, as long as they keep exploring other ways to entertain people, they're OK in my book.

So is Miyamoto just out of ideas for Wii?? And that he will now focus more on Nintendo's next console?? Or is he hinting at Miyamoto's retirement?? Or is it nothing at all?? Or...yeah I'm done :p.

Well, considering the pace at which Nintendo's been releasing peripherals, I'm not surprised that Miyamoto's creative well is in a bit of a drought. I'm sure it's just a temporary thing for him, he just needs to relax a bit, maybe have a cold one and kick back and before you know it, the proverbial floodgates will open on his imagination. Then he'll see two giraffes mating at the zoo and somehow turn that into another AAA Nintendo Franchise.

I doubt they've truly run out of ideas. I think they have just done everything they originally set out to do with the wii when they first thought of it and now they have to go back to the planning room

While I don't think I need to touch on how sensationalist the blog title is compared to the actual quote ("out of ideas" vs. "Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now"), it still is pretty much a bummer article. Aren't they banking a little bit on Motion Plus?

A Next-gen 8-bit video game system? Kick ass!

Nintendo needs to stop for a moment and think about not what rocks to throw in the new ocean, but what rocks they already have on land. Refine those rocks and you'll get shiny ones. Then throw those shiny rocks into the new ocean.

In other words Kid f***ing Icarus already.
Then make Wii Sports: Kid Icarus: Angel land sports.
Instant win for everybody.

Nintendo should really start digging the gaming blog and forum/fan sites for ideas already. Gold all over the place.

I agree with shadow1w2, killer idea. Screw the Wii Fit and Whatever goofball idea they have and give the fans what they want.

Better games in the Virtual Console
New Versions of Kid Icarus, Shadowgate (imagine that one with the wiimote?) , Boy and His Blob I could go on and on.
