"While it has only been a year since we declared 3D gaming's future, we now realize that it was only a passing fad, and have decided to shift our focus elsewhere.
We came to this conclusion on our own, not because Nintendo thinks so. We don't even know if Nintendo said anything on the subject at all, let alone if they've done so recently, and even less so if they've done so very recently.
We have no way to verify Nintendo even exists."
What I mean is, the 3D effect, when used properly, can be awesome and add enjoyment to the experience, but few films or games know how to use it well. I haven't played many games in 3D that use the effect particularly well, but you still can find some gems, like Superstardust HD. You won't want to play it in 2D again after you try it.
"I dislike 3D." - Valid opinion
"I hope 3D dies out and goes way." - Asshole opinion that seeks to deprive others of something they may enjoy.
Recognize the difference.
Iwata said he believes that, in general, stereo 3D is better than 2D for gaming, not because they make the 3DS, but because it's the way we see the world and it truly opens gameplay possibilities.
I would miss the 3D feature in my 3DS games if developers decided to stop using it.
And 3D screenshots are awesome. If only resolution was higher...
And before someone chimes in with "BUT YOU CAN TURN IT OFF IT'S NOT REQUIRED ALL HAIL NINTENDO" or some such drivel, let it be known that I refuse to spend money on an item where the main selling point, feature, and naming convention is something that I will never use. That just seems like an incredibly poor financial decision to me.
and well back to Nintendo I'm glad Iwata finally "gets it" !? Or does he really? Hope so.
I agree. The 3D was something I never thought I would consistently use before the 3ds came out, and now I feel weird whenever I turn it off.
@scrutle
It does improve the visuals. It gives everything a sense of weight and impact relative to everything else. MH3G really uses it well, as it has a real time shadow for nearly everything that further accentuates this mass... it is like looking into a little window, and in your head makes more sense than when everything is flat.
In truth, the 3D is, as others have said, a nice feature, and on some of the more tough levels of Super Mario 3D Land it was nice to turn on to help with the occasional jumps. However, glasses-free 3D requires hands to be more steady than is physically possible (hence the real reason Kid Icarus: Uprising includes a stand).
It's one of the reason I prefer Sony right now cuz they offer a lot of their best Playstation games for permanent ownership for a good price off of PSN, and I can easily transfer them to new hardware if my old hardware dies. Nintendo keeps dropping the ball on this which is why I keep emulating their games instead of buying them legit. When they finally get a good account system that isn't tied to hardware I'll be glad to start buying their games.
Either way, this is a good sign. The 3DS may have ruined Miyamoto and Iwata's careers. Miyamoto did "retire" from general manager (kind of like Yokoi left Nintendo after the Virtual Boy bombed). Maybe Iwata wants to avoid being fired from the company. Might be too late, though. The financial damage has been done to the company, and on his watch. They might be letting him try to exit the company with some dignity and make up for letting the developers run wild at the company's expense.
Also Step Up 3D was better than Inception.
That is all.
1. james cameron directed it.
2. I got the ticket for free / someone else bought them
I haven't tried any gaming in 3d though... i'd be marginally interested, but if I didn't already have 2 HD TV's in the house... I'd still rather wait for 4K.
that's not my point, they're all after the next gimmick, that's what I'm saying
3D is old as fuck, even virtua boy had it
Nintendo (and other companies, like Sony) decided that this was something people were actually wanting, since people were actually paying to see these movies. But every (almost, 98% at least. Avatar withstanding) movie came with an asterisk that says people are saying how terrible they look, how they're a waste of that extra money spent and quickly became about how much they hated 3D. Even cinematographers say its a nightmare to shoot for, because the tech is still not where it should be to get the most of it.
And never mind we actually see in 3D, and any good cinematographer (and very obviously, modern game maker) should be able to make "impactful" images easily with what they have, and not with a blurry gimmick.
Don't get me wrong, the 3D on the 3DS is fun, but it was never going to change the world like Nintendo (or that one phone maker, maybe Samsung? Commercials all but disappeared for that phone) thought it would. Only the industries pushing these things, wanted these things.
