Italy will help Assassin's Creed 2 sell 9 million copies photo

Ubisoft has high hopes for Assassin's Creed 2, and given the illogical success of the first game, who can blame them? The stab-happy sequel is expected to surpass 9 million sales, and Ubisoft is certain that a geographical ace up its sleeve will seal the deal.

"Why? Because of Italy," claims development boss Patrice Désilets. "Italy has something, really. I’ve met a bunch of people, and Italy has something. Italy is one of the most visited places in the world, and there’s a reason for that. Being able to visit Florence, or visit Venice and Tuscany, is something that people will be attracted by.

"And it’s a sequel, and [there's been] good press on it, so I think we’re going to outsell [the original]. My producer and I were joking that we’re going to sell, like, 725 million copies of it,"

May be a bit ambitious there, but you've got to dream a dream. We'll find out just how well AC2 does when it launches on November 20, won't we?

Remember Prince of Persia: Sands of Time? When all this started? *sigh*

I loved Italy when I visited it some years back, too. But unless they vary the missions more, they might as well have put it in Jersey.

Italian here! :D

I actually liked the first Assasin's Creed alot, despite it's problems and repeating quests.

That said, this is actually looking very good and the location is just one extra reason for me to buy it... Florence is one of my favorite cities in the world... But I'm biased..

That statement was gibberish. What exactly does "Italy has something" mean aside from asserting that there is at least one undefined noun within what we call Italy? And 725 million copies isn't a great joke. Saying "it could sell as high as 420 million copies" would be a legitimate joke. Definitely nothing to fear in regards to selling multi-millions of copies though.

Okay then, sure.

just as this was announced, i was finalizing my trip next week to venice, verona , florence and rome.

I'm pretty interested in the game, even though i disliked the first one, primarily because of it's setting.

Hell, even the BF who doesn't play games but is a history geek is looking forward to AC2

Italy?! It's not because of new game mechanics or cool shit... it's just because of Italy... whatever.

What an idiotic thing to say. If the game had some function to reference these historic places and actually teach the history of the places visited in game, then sure. But it won't.

This is fucking stupid PR. Some people just need to shut their mouths.

I'm still buying this game, but I'm actually LESS interested in it due to this retarded gibberish.

I'm just excited to be able to count the numerous glitches that EVERY Ubisoft title has.

damn! you guys really aren't into this Italy line. Italy selling point=blistering negativity... even from the people who want the game.

I can't wait to visit virtual, historical Italy... and cut some fools.

is it just me or do screens of this one not look as good as the first.. I can't put my finger on it and I haven't gone back to compare, but this one feels more cartoony or something. I'm sure it looks great in motion...

@Nitex

Considering that the last one sold about 8 million (3.5 mil on PS3 and 4.5 on 360), I don't think it's a far fetched number at all.

I wasn't a big fan of the first, but I did like the idea and thought the control scheme was pretty innovative (if only it wasn't so rinse-and-repeat).

I think if they work out some of the major complaints that people had then they could have a really awesome game on their hands.

Really? They think this game will outsell the original? I have no doubt that this is the better game of the two, but given how poorly the first was received, I doubt this will come anywhere close to the where the huge hype got the first one.

Hype was the only reason I bought the first game. And I have yet to really see anything beyond the most remedial changes to the sequel (environments are improved, haystacks aren't invisibility cloaks, water doesn't kill you). If this game only offers minor improvements over the original, then I'm going to seriously consider not buying it.

@Dexter345: Can you think of a sequel to a successful game (from a sales perspective), that sold more poorly than its predecessor? I'm sure there are many, but I'm having difficulty remembering of any that performed poorer after, say, the mid-90's.

The only ones I can really think of are spin-off style sequels like MegamanX 2 or Final Fantasy X 2. Or part 3,4,5... of a franchise.

Italy as a selling point? Why bother when they have "KILL PEOPLE IN FUCKING AWESOME WAYS LIKE WHOA"?

That said, the location is one of the main improvements IMO. Venice is a perfect location for crazy shit to happen, especially with the addition of swimming and water-oriented kills. The various preview articles for the game have basically been lists of corrections for every single issue i had with the first game, so i'm pretty excited. 9 million copies? Doubtful. Certainly a bunch though.

The first game I enjoyed entirely, save for the few flags in the most obscene-hard-to-reach-places, it was a good game. The pc version was a HUGE computer hog, like crysis level hogging, without the beautiful graphics. My hope is that they've managed to make it less of a computer hog and increase the graphics quality, cause face it, games that try to be mainstream that don't look good just are harder to enjoy

"People will buy our game because it's in Italy"

"People will buy our game because it's in Hell"

sometimes producers and developers scare me with their ideas....
