Itagaki thinks PS3 development is easy peasy lemon squeezy photo

Any developer who thinks the PlayStation 3 is difficult to develop for is obviously some sort of chicken baby, as ex-Tecmo designer Tomonobu Itagaki can do it while bouncing on his balls. Betting anyone a drink that Nintendo's Famicom is harder to develop for than the PlayStation 3, Itagaki made the claim in his typically blunt fashion:

"One more thing I would add is that I don't think that developing for the PS3 is hard at all. It was much harder developing for the Famicom. It's true. I mean, give someone who's developing for the PS3 a Famicom and see if they can make a game for it. They won't be able to. Yeah, that'll prove it. We'll bet a drink on it."

That might have something to do with the fact that the Famicom's insides probably haven't been seen by those PS3 developers in over twenty years, but I guess there's a logic there. Itagaki also had some words of advice for Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya who said earlier this year that the action genre of games hadn't evolved since his own game was released:

"... There are two types of people out there who like to make controversial, splashy comments. There are those who are truly outspoken, and there are those who are just trying to cover up for their weaknesses. We have a saying here in Japan, 'the weaker dog barks more' -- and I sincerely hope that he's not one of the latter. Also, I would also just like to remind him to make sure to stay awake for the next eight years.

All I'll say is, if the weaker dog barks more, why hasn't anyone gotten Itagaki a muzzle yet?

Mmmh...ok, they guy's officially going insane. I don't want to bash PS3 but it's notoriously still difficult to develop for, and the Famicom comparison just adds a big "LOL" to it.

I see what he's getting at. Back in the Famicom days, you need to be smart to get the Famicom to do "tricks" like displaying more characters on screen without flickering and crap. These days, if you have a problem making a game, just use more hardware! MOAR RAM!

I kinda miss the days when originality was necessary because you had so little to work with. Now that anything is possible, everything keeps falling back on the same old genres because it's too expensive to make a mistake.

Itagaki is a joke. His games aren't revolutionary or amazing in any way and he talks so much utter shit.

I'm assuming he is now developing something for the PS3 since in the past he has stated his preference of the 360 over the "complicated of architecture" Playstation 3.

Acording to the guys at Criterion the 360's dev kit is similar to the last gen consoles, while the PS3 has diferent dev kit.
In their opinion, if a programer says the PS3 is hard to makes games, then that programer is lazy.

RJG is right on the money. Back in the day, there was a tiny amount of RAM, a slow processor, and tiny storage - not to mention that your code had to be bug-free, because there was no way (short of an expensive physical recall) to patch it post-release. The NES had 2K of RAM on-board, a 1.79 MHz processor, a 5.37 MHz GPU, and up to about 48K for cartridge storage. There were 50 or so colors to work with. Your sprites were fixed sizes, and you could only have 64 sprites on screen at once, and only 8 per scan line.

The bottom line is, there were lots of limitations on the programmers to make quality games. From a programmer's perspective, that's more difficult than having the world open to you, and then deciding what you want to do with it.

Hey Itakagi, when you are writing word doc with game design and rules on it. Well, of course it is not much more difficult on the ps3 than on the 360.

Ask the same question to a 3d programmer what he thinks of the RSX vs 360 graphic card. Might be a different story.

Huh? Is he flip flopping here? I remember him hating on the PS3 and Sony when it came to porting Ninja Gaiden 2. Change of employment and suddenly he has a change of heart? Riiiight, okay crazy man.

Demtor: The two aren't exclusive. You can hate an architecture and still think it's not difficult to program for.

@ Miguelcar808 - would you rather developers take time to learn something new or focus their energy on the creativity that goes into their games?

forgive me if I'm wrong... Itagaki never developed anything for the PS3... Sure there was Ninja Gaiden Sigma, but he wasn't involved with that project.

Yeah, for the people who are lashing out - it seems he's not really downing the 360 - so read closer and chilllll. He's just saying the PS3 isn't as tough as the whiners are making it out to be. It's ok. Put your redbull down and relax. No need to do any bashing because HE'S not bashing.

Honestly, I just want to see a new game from this guy.
Some of you may disagree, but myself and my hardcore gamer friends all love and praise Ninja Gaiden and NG2, along with Dead or Alive.

These games are awesome.

Ninja Gaiden gives the combat that I always wanted. A HUGE set of moves for nearly a dozen different weapons with enemies of all types attacking ruthlessly.

They're a true ode to the difficulty of the classics which required quick reflexes, planned thought, and persistance.

Sure the guy seems like a dick, but I don't blame him. I think he DOES make the best action game out there.

Sure the stories suck, I'm not defending them. I'm just saying that the gameplay he provides with these titles are awesome.

Not Devil May Cry nor God of War has the brutal combos that NG does. All with amazing weapons.

To end this rant, all I can say is I'de love to see an Itagaki ps3 game. Either way I'm lucky enough to have both hardcore consoles.

I'll be waiting impatiently for his next title.
(Please a NG like combat game MMO!)

Porting an Xbox game to the PS3 is soo easy. All it takes is 30 almost slaves and a whip. Back in the Famicom day's you needed things like keyboards and such.

I reckon he's right on the money - I mean, sure the PS3 might have some complicated interfaces, but... development for the Famicom had to be done in Assembler. Surely that's worth a difference there.
