It still won't be a Burnout game, but Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is trying photo

Critics of previous Gran Turismo games have zeroed-in on the title's lack of damage modeling as the glaring misstep of Polyphony Digital's otherwise impeccable racing sim. With the subsequent release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (those of us in the States will have to wait until April 15th), there's been chatter that the online portion is in much need of some tweaking, but that the core gameplay is very much intact.

The guys over at CVG broke the news today through an interview with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi that a major update is slated for later this year, which will remedy those problems, as well as silence the critics mentioned above. In turn, IGN followed up with an interview of their own, and have confirmed what was previously said, and given us a better timeline for the "improvements."

Looks like we will have to wait until the fall, at the very least. Not exactly what fans have been waiting to hear, but hey... at least it's coming. The full interview should be debuting on the web tomorrow, and we'll be sure to keep you gear heads out there in Destructoid-land abreast of the situation. Until then, keep your head up, and find solace in the fact that this supposed "glorified demo" has more content then most full-versioned bona fide racers.

Wooo bumper cars. I hate that cause it detracts from the experience but the rest of the game more than makes up for it.

I don't know, qwerty. Grid looks good, but the last time I checked, the vids of actual gameplay weren't up to GT standards.

Racing games without damage are worthless to me. Burnout has me spoiled, lol.

I hate the gameplay of GT games, but I might buy it just to show off the prettyness to people

If Forza can do damage, so can GT. Pass.

When there is no damage in-game, I will often find myself resorting to dirty methods if I'm about to lose the race, aka rear ending an oponent, or using them as sidewalls in a curve.

I will try not to hit anyone during the whole race, but if it's a race winning decision, I will sadly resort to it :(

LOOL @ WEEDGAN

And good news, because a lot of us weren't going to buy it since it didn't have damage.

The cynic in me assumes that he’s just saying that to drum up anticipation in the US and to get people to purchase Prologue — I mean, come on, how much do you guys want to bet that the update will somehow be delayed into 2009?

Still, the fact that they’re even considering adding something as game-changing as damage to Prologue is huge.

Neh forget damage. I actually don't care if GT ever implements damage lol. Hate losing 30 lap races to a stupid AI car who's a little too careless.

This is good news to those of us who were/are on the fence for this "glorified (although online multiplayer, 60 car, 6 track, having) demo" will be getting improvements as time passes. I hope the damage looks like DiRT. I didn't find DiRT to be extremely fun, but it was fun to smash up the cars.

@Zanch: They are saying that damage will be added to GT5P, so... I don't know where you are going with that statement.

I'll buy a PS3 when the real Gran Turismo is released. This is just GT 4 with a new coat of paint. If I wanted a bumper car game I'd buy Big Bumpin'.

Although this should have been added in previous versions of a racing simulator, face it car damage over the race even if minute effects your driving, I'm glad they decided to get it in there even if you have to wait a little bit for it. I'm still not planning on getting this even though it is tempting. If it included my car, 350z, I probably would have gotten it, but from what I remember I didn't see it on the list for prologue, but I'm sure the full version will have it.

"ut Gran Turismo head Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that the series is finally going to be implementing damage, saying it could be included as a downloadable feature for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue as early as this Autumn. "

so wait.. if it is just a download that basically means its just all cosmetic? seems like it would need a lot more than a n optional download to make it effect the driving. if i can still go full speed when my car is on fire with one wheel left i will still be ramming the crap out of people.

I just wish that, along with the damage update, they'd add something that would make it more fun than just driving a car. Then again, sim racers just aren't for me, I suppose.

I thought they always stated that damage wasnt implemented because they couldnt simulate it well. They didnt have the crash data for a Ferrari Enzo vs a Zonda Pagani for example (wouldn't you love to see one of these machines smash into a wall though), and therefore couldn't implement it in keeping with a sim. Although I guess no damage isn't very simulative either.

Fuck it, this game looks gorgeous. I don't particularly care for damage models or not, GT owns simulation racing.

Also, if you have ever played GT, 'ramming the crap out of people' is not a actic that will get you to the finish line first.

@BlackSunEmpire:

I remember reading something back in the day about how Polyphony Digital would've had to pay an extra premium on the licenses to implement damage simulation on the cars, and since there's so many of them, it would've broke their bank.

I do have to say that Damage Simulation makes or breaks it for me, I've been spoiled by the likes of Burnout and real driving, which prevents me from getting completely immersed in the previous GT games.

I remember trying to Parallel Park with one of the cars on a track back in GT3, but the wheels didn't turn enough for me to do it properly. Simulator my ass!

@Vitamin Awesome, I think they were (mostly) making shit up so they could dodge the subject until they either 1.unveil car damage and it looks amazing, or 2. people ignore it and buy their game blindly.

@Brainderailment Thats how I took the 'it will cost us to implement damage' story as well. I more wanted to check I had remembered it correctly, and the Alzheimers isnt setting in yet.

@Vitamin Awesome Nice job, I would not have thought of trying a parallel park. I concede the win to you.

And what the hell, Hells_666 is back?? I thought he must have made another 'PS3 fanboy account'. And he didn't even claim GT5P was the proof 360 sucked. This is all going very wrong.

;

Well it's not 100% of the 350Z but prologue contains a "Nissan Fairlady Z Version S '07" Which is an upgraded racing model, if I am correct in my assumption (it looks almost identical!)

I am ok with no damage. I would like it but its still a fun game without. They should though, implement the same sort of system that DiRT had, as that was awesome beyond belief. And reasonably realistic (although if you broke components in the right order, you couldn't kill the car anymore...). I loved how the car veered off course when you suffered certain damage. Very good!

they probably saw grid, and freaked out

sure looks like it...

Though I absolutely addore Forza 2, I hate the damage in the online part of the game... I've ended so many races in like the last or pre-last corner of the race because the second guy slightly touched me ( supposedly on accident, eventhough he drove 2 laps behind me without touching :p) and me ending in a pile of twisted metal on the side... but then turning collisions of is just retarded as you're racing against ghosts and there's no longer slipstreaming, which turns the whole thing into a fucking timetrial...

Wait, a major update to an early version of an uncompleted game? Why don't they just put the nightly builds up on PSN?
