And wouldn't you? Well, this is not what you're probably thinking. Capcom film buisness boss Toshihiro Tokumaru did say in a recent interview that "in the future, we'd like to create films where we retain the rights".
Of course, as you heard earlier, they're pumping major cash into their latest film, Lost Planet, news gathered from this same interview. Imagine what Resident Evil or even Street Fighter films would have been if Capcom was at the helm of production.
He admits that Capcom regrets handing over the rights of Resident Evil to Constantin Film AG, though that's not because they thought they were bad movies. Tokumaru says they regret the decision because they couldn't freely use any of the finished product for themselves.
Despite that, it seems that Tokumaru is trying to say something, and Spong has the highlights. He said, "Personally, as a movie-goer, I get the impression that the story in western movies tends to be underdeveloped."
Later, he added that "2006 was the year when Western movies lost ground while Japanese movies gained strength."
Come right out and say it, why don't you?
We recommend checking out the full interview, as it gives some details on the upcoming Street Fighter Chun-Li movie as well as the company's future plans for film.
I want some examples, i'm really curious
Crapflaps with a side of weaksauce!
Definitely agree that overall they are waaay ahead of the U.S. in terms of animated storytelling (there are definite exceptions, of course) but their live-action film industry is just as crappy as ours. You get mountains of cookie-cutter tripe with an occasional gem hidden in the crap.
Of course, the anime industry is not without its large share of cliched half-ass works, either...
Yeah, but at least I enjoy watching Anime, good or bad.
Here's a few examples
Aruku hito
Green Mind, Metal Bats
Haru no Yuki (Spring Snow)
Love/Juice
Smile
Sugar and Spice
Summer Time Machine Blues
Tony Takitani
I like Japanese movies, and especially TV shows, because they tend to focus on character development over plot, which I believe makes for a better story. American films anyway, tend to do focus on plot over character, for the most part.
This is especially obvious with novels. Popular crime novelists in Japan, such as Natsuo Kirino and Miyuki Miyabe, are more character-driven while crime novels in America are plot-driven.
Cool, thanks. I'll check those out.
koi no mon
swing girls
kamikaze girls
tokyo zombie
guitar wolf
of my list though probably swing girls is the only one considered a "Good" movie depending on what people consider "Good" to be.
But everything here is guaranteed good entertainment for people who frequent dtoid. Probably why so many of their movies are good is because of the different cultures, so things seem "fresh".. I don't really know what I'm talking about. Oh and a word of caution Wild zero is very B movie... its a zombie B movie with punk/rockabilly guitar wolf in it. lulz.
I was in a bar in Ithaca, ny and they played it at a bar in a projector.
Needless to say I sat there through the duration of the movie, amazed.
go me.
I'm trying to find the Summer Time Machine Blues, I love time travel.
