Give me Guy Gardner, Kilowog, that alien lady with the butterfly wings, Mogo, Jon Stewart, Tomar Re, Bzzd, Jack T. Chance, Princess Iolande, Arisia, Stel, Boodika, Rot Lop Fan, Leezle Pon, Isamot Kol and Vath Sarn, Soranik Natu, DkrtzyRRR, Sodam Yat, or Sinestro before you give me Hal Jordan.
Frank Miller has certifiably fucking lost it, and not in a good way.

@ charlie von chaingun - Nope, I disagree, Miller has lost it in the best possible way. That man took self parody to the next level. All Star Batman is one of the most hilarious things I've read in years. It's just so gleefully terrible that it had to have been done that way on purpose.
Where Hal Jordan is just deadly boring is in big flashy space opera on a galactic scale, which is the heart of what a Green Lantern story has become in this day and age. They keep drawing him in to the big stupid events because he has a special relationship with Sinestro and a special relationship with Carol Ferris (who is currently the head of the Violet Lanterns aka the Star Sapphires). But honestly, Sinestro's relationship with Kyle Rayner (who is also pretty bland) is more interesting these days (Kyle is hooked up with Sinestro's daughter, who hates her father), and Carol Ferris would be more interesting without Hal.
Hal Jordan may be a great character, but he's not a great character when it comes to the stories that Green Lantern books are best set up to tell. The Green Lantern books are interesting, since they're the DC books that tell stories on the largest scale, and Hal just isn't interesting at that scale these days.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one then. It pains me to see Miller's descent into self parody these past few years. Remember how close he was to getting that Batman Vs Al. Quada(sp?) thing made a few years ago? Fucks. Sake.
Coupled with him anal raping Will Eisner with his take on "The Spirit" film he made and the agonizing dissapoint on All Star Batman.. yeah, I think he needs to be committed. Or dissappear again so he can rediscover that lightning in a bottle that he used to produce so effortlessly.
I can dig that. I stopped reading about a year ago, but I believe that the reason that Hal isn't as interesting as the rest of the Corps is that he's meant so serve as the eyes of the reader. Primarily in the main book.
That said, I think he's one of the more interesting characters around. His relationship with his brother, Coast City.. I love that stuff. I've never read the " On The Road" stuff.. but I here it pretty good, if not heavy handed from what I can surmise.
Hal Jordan is bland when you frame him in the context of that he's a caucasian american male in a corps of 7199 other Green Lanterns. One of whom is a friggin planet. Compared to all the interesting stories that some writers have hit home runs on from that kind of material, yeah- Hal is pretty vanilla.
Are you going to be picking up any of the new GL books once DC relaunches everything? They're going to be doing four Lantern books, and they seem pretty good.
There's a Red Lantern Corps book, that I honestly don't know much about.
Green Lantern Corps is going to become the Guy Gardner and Jon Stewart book (which is pretty solid win)
Green Lantern: New Guardians is about Kyle and his motley crew of rainbow warriors (Bleez, Glomulus, Arkillo, St. Walker, Munk, and Fatality)
Green Lantern, the core book is going to be focusing on MASSIVE SPOILERS OF A BOOK THAT CAME OUT DAYS AGO
.
.
.
Sinestro as the newest Green Lantern 2814, and Hal Jordan who has been stripped of the ring.
.
.
.
END SPOILER
All of that sounds solid to me.
to be honest, I'm not sure man. Since I moved from Florida to Chicago - the lack of a decent paying job has me picking up monthly books REALLY infrequently. All I've really read since I've been up here is Warren Ellis' FUCKING AWESOME "Transmetropolitan" in trades.
I'm probably going to be a trade reader from here on out :(
I read all the way up to the end of ZOMG "Blackest Night", and yeah.. wow awesome. Everything you listed sounds gravy. I love all the Lantern Corps, I was so die-hard I was able to snatch up all the rings during the "Blackest Night" run. That Red Lantern book sounds like a dream come true..
Haha. Yeah, you sure did, Frank. You sure did. I don't really know if he intended All Star Batman to be funny or not, but that scene where Robin almost killed GL made me fall out of my seat. I spent at least twenty minutes laughing my ass off when I read that. XD
I don't mean to imply that I disapprove of "it's so bad it's good" stuff at all.
Chrissakes, I have a "The Room" soundboard app on my phone.
But yeah Frank Miller... you so crazy. I can't wait til he releases "Batman Vs Casey Anthony" in 5 years.
I grew up with the JLI. Guy has much more fun as a character than Hal ever could. Plus you know...Fuck this type of writing when I was a kid:
As for Kyle, he's an artist driven character. Lots of cool stuff and potential, but he doesn't have the story telling base around him.
Right on, Guy is fuckin TITS.
But... Kyle is pretty rad too. He has his own stories of love and loss. He and Guy are different beasts, that much is certain.
Man, Dtoid turned into Newsarama pretty fast! I haven't talked this much comics in a while.
From what I've seen both online and off, outside of the DC offices, Hal isn't that well thought of. He's considered bland and boring. The reason why people like Jon and Kyle is that they actually have some character, which is something that Hal often doesn't (and sometimes has his character development retconned away.) Hal's biggest glory ride was his run with Green Arrow, where Ollie supplied all the personality and Hal was busy learning why his conservative ideals didn't work in the real world.
I mean, yeah, he isn't the boredom that is Barry Allen, but that isn't exactly an achievement to be proud of.
When he came back in Rebirth, that was fucking awesome
We need a Green Lantern video game and a cartoon series that aren't complete crap. Get it together DC. Screw movies.
