Let's clear the air on last night's Chrono Trigger rumortoid: it's coming to the DS, and it's coming our way this holiday season. The lovely folks at Square Enix sent out a press release today confirming Weekly Famitsu's report of the Chrono Trigger DS remake. The game will feature a new dungeon (yes!), a "wireless play mode", dual-screen presentation, and touch-screen functionality. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the use of the two screens will probably be pretty perfunctory, à la Final Fantasy III DS. We'll probably be able to use the stylus to move around and navigate menus, and the second screen will house extra menus and information. That new dungeon sounds intriguing, though. No firm release date has been set, but it will drop sometime this holiday season, which could mean anywhere from October to Christmas. Similarly, mum's the word about the alleged graphical "enhancements." The announcement says that character artist Akira Toriyama will be on hand to "lend his signature art style to create [a] vibrant world," but there are no specifics. I suppose it could be redone in 3D, but I really hope that Square Enix holds on to the beautiful sprites that were so effective the first time around. People like to be harsh on Square Enix for whoring out its popular franchises, but I doubt anyone will complain about this. Quite frankly, these remakes don't bother me that much -- the more people that get to play Chrono Trigger, the better. [Via Earthtimes. Thanks, Nick and nilcam!] [Update: According to GameSpot, Chrono Trigger won't get the 3D treatment that Final Fantasy III and IV did. Thanks, GohanGVO!]

I think I'm excited because I've never really played Chrono Trigger.
@NightDehumidifier
The superior ps1 version? You mean the one plagued by graphical glitches, slowdown, and load times? Oh you mean the anime sequences make up for it? Oh you're a douchebag? Oh I see.
Oh and how about knowing more about the psx to psp scene before you talk about porting it on the psp. The psx emulator on the psp has trouble with chrono trigger. Not only does it keep the slowdown and load times (even though its on a fucking memory stick), it has tons of game stopping bugs due to the lack of support, including horrible sound glitches. So go ahead try playing CT on your psp, lets see how far you get.
Oh and before you say you can run a snes emulator on the psp to play CT, you can't, because the game runs at slideshow speeds even with sound disabled.
That means your only choice for portable CT is on the DS or play it on your laptop.
Good day to you :)
YES! This is friggin' great. Time to get a DS.
Read my Start of the Affair entry on Chrono Trigger. Short, but sweet. No major spoilers.

I love my DS.
This is most excellent
I'd still rather play it on my 32" TV.
@byrc - are you a rep for the DS? Because if you are, I'll take 12.
Only one thing I can say... DO WANT!
I agree with king3vbo.
I've never had trouble playing CT on my PSP (SNES version). I'll still probably buy a DS for this though as long as it's not just a port. A port isn't worth buying a DS for to me.
I second naia's motion.
@tgammet -- A brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode adds exciting new dimensions to this timeless classic
I think I just got a big, sweaty erection. I'm also quite pleased about this news.
chrono trigger is the one game i beaten 200+ times. i freaking love this game.
FING SWEET! i wonder if the game will get a real translation or use the snes one.
Maybe at long last the Chrono series will finally grace European shores!.....next year...
I've decided I don't care unless there are major additions. I'm not going to spend 200 dollars for an extra dungeon....
Time to upgrade to a DS lite. Between this and the
ultra-hard FFIV remake...
JOY!
Being European, this will be the first time i will get to play the title.
@byrc
Just ignore him. We've all learned to do that by now.

"Unlike the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remakes, Chrono Trigger will not receive a graphical overhaul, though it will be reformatted to utilize the DS' dual-screen presentation and touch-screen functionality."
2D ftw.
1) People are already bitching.
2) I hope it takes on the 3D look that the FF3 and FF4 remakes have, purely because it makes it more graphically attractive to people who might not know CT's legacy. When it comes to graphical direction, I'm more interested in this getting out to as many people as possible rather than preserving what little nostalgia I have for the game.
Square-Enix CAN'T fuck this up. They just... CAN'T. They wouldn't.... would they?
Guess Squeenix is on the verge of bankruptcy then?
HAHAHA, THE GUYS FROM CHRONO RESSURECTION MUST BE SHITTING THEMSELVES IN DESPAIR!
I'm joining the "upgrade to the DS Lite" group.
Guessing that this is one of the reasons CT hasn't been rumored to be coming to VC like Earthbound and Super Mario RPG have.
Also, fapping at work.
YAY!!
Anyone got any extra buckets? I filled mine with cum.
It's officialtoid: This is fucking rad news.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHAAAAWWWW!!!
ZOMG..i came.
Dear sweet God... my prayers have been answered. Hope it sells well and nets me prayer #2: a chrono sequel (that isn't cross...)
Thanks the gods, its not a 3D remake.
Beautifull 2D art is way better than blurry DS 3D graphics.
Now I will be getting a ds now just becasue of that game. Good times good times. Oh yes there is a GOD!!!!
DEAR LORD I WAS ABOUT TO SELL MY DS!
There are no words ....
Fuck. Yeah.
Time to go DS shopping...
since I'm a console gamer I'd actually like to see some of these rereleased on consoles. but that wouldn't be possible
I really need to get my DS repaired...
Oh, man. This is terrible, awful news. Jesus must be on course to return and herald in Armageddon in the next few months. I mean, the fact that Square would actually do something with Chrono Trigger... they've been sitting on this outstanding IP like doing anything with it would fuel the armies of Satan.
Really, though, I have to say I feel a little spoiled. Dragon Quest IX, The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy Remakes, and now Chrono Trigger redux -- it's good to be a DS owner.
Chrono Trigger: 1998
Chrono Cross: 2000
Chrono Trigger DS: 2008
Chrono Trigger 3: Keep on dreaming, nerds.
Ok now the DS will play the following RPGs
-Final Fantasy 1 2 3 4 5 and 6
-Tales of Phantasia
-Breath Of fire 1 & 2
-A valkyre profile remake
-Disgaega
-FFTA 1 and 2
-Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2
-CHrono Trigger
This is one of the best systems for RPGs in recent history second only to maybe the PS2.
Just reeks of a lazy cash-in port like Front Mission DS to me. I guess most people don't own an original copy though...
Though this does seem to be a quick and dirty port (at least until there's more hands on time with it), I'm still very much so in this. Now I can do my year play throughs on the go. Next up is Earthbound/Mother collection on DS ::prays::
I was going to say that the only bad thing about this was that I just played through it again a month ago, until I remembered that how the HELL could that be a bad thing?
Good, now I finally get to play it.
Excited, but still waiting for teh Secret of Mana 2(Seiken Densetsu 3) to actually get released state side. I know about the fan translation and all, but still.
At any rate, it will be nice to try and get those other endings. The only time I got to play CT was when I borrowed a friends copy of the PS rerelease.
@Wedge: Yep most people don't actually own a SNES copy..or a working snes....or a portable snes the size of a pocket device like the DS
Seriously the prices on SNES hard copies are silly, it is a cash in but one that fans actually DO want.
No 3D?
FUCK YES
I was hoping for an engine similar to DOM: Monster game that is out that is like 2.5d but even straight snes remake will do
Well folks, I'm damn well glad Square Enix finally got round to it. There was plenty of demand and oppurtunity to do this on GBA, but a DS cut I can't complain about. Either way I'm happy, especially so because Chrono Trigger unfortunately never got released in u.k/europe. Possibly one of the biggest past crimes of Square (along with Super Mario RPG.
All I can say is thank you Square Enix, just when you were beginning to kill my love for you, you plant Chrono Trigger on me like a big wet kiss.
I'll just add, I really don't care whether its a port of the SNES version, as its still damn good graphics wise. I do think that using the DQMJ engine would be a way to go if they were to update it. This would also help improve the tech magic effects and those things the SNES used to truggle with.
Good to see Toriyama onboard and I hope the soundtrack update is just as epic, I'm just happy anyway, I'm gonna get some booze and celebrate.
Happy happy, joy joy.
I wonder what took Squeenix so fucking long to even go back to Chrono Trigger.
Why's everyone excited for what's gonna be a ghetto port?
I put aside playing FFIV until the new version comes out and now I have this to look forward to for the first time, score.
Yes. YES. YES!!!!
Lame.
New game plz. No more of this shit.
now we just need a localized version of mother 3
Still no sign of Aerox. What is going on?
...This is the best news that I've heard in a loooong time. I'm... This is just too awesome.
FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Damn I hope the wireless functionality means the game supports multiplayer. A la Secret of Mana.
I haven't been able to think about anything today but chrono trigger. It's amazing that a game released 13 years ago is causing this kind of fap fest.
Sadly, I never got to play this game when it was out on the Super NES. Huzzah for ports! Here's hoping we can get some Super Mario RPG and Earthbound action, too.
Does anyone really want to play this game with a DS Lite dpad or a touch screen? Beyond 360 I can't think of a system I'm less interested in playing Chrono Trigger on.
