A billion years ago, I reviewed
Far Cry 2. During the process, my save file corrupted. I didn’t think to mention it; I believed at the time it was a misfortunate and random bug. It wasn’t, as many of you noted in my review.
But put those bad feelings away. The patch Ubisoft
teased earlier this year finally went live for all platforms yesterday. Whew.
In addition to fixing the tragic bug, the title update/patch also gives multiplayer a bit of a boost. Stronger weapons, respawn time tweaking, and the realistic ‘hardcore mode’ are all part of this little free downloadable package.
If you’re copy of
Far Cry 2 is collecting dust, here’s the nudge to get back into it. Watch out for malaria, though. I heard it’s more dangerous than a rusty weapon.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also, I hope they make stealth a more valid option. It's total bullshit when you spend an hour observing a convoy's route and planting IDEs when they all magically see you hiding in the bushes a million miles away, breaking off in the escort jeeps to f*cking run you over.
now if i could talk my friends into playing multiplayer more or find more people to play multiplayer with in this game i would be happy. i love this game and i love the multiplayer so much laughter and good times the few people i have played with have had.
It isnt the best game ever made, but whatever hehe i find it fun
Since my Video Card came with this game, I have a legitimate copy, but I rarely play it because of the CD check and updates.
God, I wish all PC game publishers would just fucking drop SecuROM and go with Steam-only DRM - any authentication past that is just the biggest load of shit and annoyance I've ever dealt with on any PC.
I played through the single player on the toughest difficulty and never ran into this problem; if anything, sometimes they were too dumb and would be a few yards away and not see me. Maybe you just need to brush up on your stealth skillz.
This is all I've wanted. I don't mind the save corrupting because at its heart Far Cry 2 is a game I never want to end. It's the missions and environments leaving execution entirely up to you.
The only thing I've thought they needed to fix was the respawning times. Since I rarely take the same roads in and out of the central town, I wasn't too bothered about the outposts. It was the jeeps that warp out of nowhere. It's like those flying reptiles in Morrowind, they just won't leave you alone!
Bland.. as... fook.
I think it's a love or hate game like Assassin's Creed, you can't enjoy it if you go head-on, trying to 'beat' it. You have to take your time and 'experience' it. I hated both AC and this the first time I played them but my second attempt, approaching them like that, allowed me two hugely enjoyable experiences.
@Chronic I did, the codes are freely available online if you need them (they aren't single use) and they're well worth doing. They actually make a massive addition to the story, to the point that it's really bad that some people didn't get to play that bit of content!
This post fails to mention that Ubisoft are now going to let certain popular custom maps be played in ranked mode, which is a fairly significant developement - there are already 6 new ranked maps to play on... Seriously, the map editor is amazing, and some of the custom maps going round are great.
Every SINGLE mission is literally:
-Go to location A
-Kill Target B or steal Object C or destroy Building D
-Repeat
Do this for 40 hours and you will see the problem people have. There is just no variety. The same can be said about GTA, but it at least makes it fun at times.
Way too much pointless driving - by doing all this backtracking is artificially lengthening the game – a big no no. This game does not need to be particularly long given the story and missions we have. It is especially grinding on checkpoints that you need to pass through just to get to your mission – because it happens so often (2 or 3 per journey) the whole fun factor is drained out of it. The attitude I have with the checkpoints are “Yes I can do something creative when approaching the next checkpoint, but what is the point – they will respawn very soon and there is another 3 more up ahead” – this leads me to take the most efficient and timesaving option of rolling up in my truck, hopping into the turret and unloading on the entire camp. Again and again and again.
If the stealth system worked then that would be a great new way to do missions– but alas it is also broken. Knife a guy and he screams alerting the whole camp. Use a silence MP5? – nope. Kill one guy and suddenly everyone notices.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful, but there is absolutely nothing out there worth exploring - the world is barren, it’s nowhere near as interesting as Fallout 3 for example. That’s not entirely true - you can hunt for some diamonds (which can be found anyway while doing missions) or look for golden AK’s (pointless to get more than 1 as they will eventually break, so you tend to just keep it in perfect condition in a gun box at home). But apart from that there is no reason to explore unless you REALLY like to look at scenery.
How repetitive the game is depends on how boring of a person you are. There are plenty of different ways to tackle every situation if you want. The stealth is actually quite satisfying once you get the camo suit and use your environment. If you can only take out one guy before you're discovered, that's not the game's fault, it's yours. I certainly don't have that problem.
You basically summed up the problem with all open-world games with your gun truck example. Most of these games tout variety, but the average gamer will just find one strategy that works and stick with it, then bitch about how repetitive the game is. Same old story.
The repetition refers to the structure of the games itself. Like I said before: "Yes I can do something creative when approaching the next checkpoint, but what is the point – they will respawn very soon and there is another 3 more up ahead".
This means that the first few times it is enjoyable to try different things and be creative when handling certain situations or missions - but when the game forcibly puts you in the EXACT SAME situation time and time and time again for the rest of the game it becomes very boring - creativity takes a back seat and you are left asking why you are doing the same thing for the 30th time. It becomes a chore. Understand? - Now perhaps this sort of repetitive activity keeps the likes of you entertained, but I need my games with a little variety.
As for stealth - firstly if you had any idea what you are talking about you should know that the camo suit only works when you are completely stationary. Secondly explain why when a silenced mp5 is fired or an enemy is crept up upon and knifed, it can be heard by the enemies that are quite far away - because this is exactly how the game plays. In my 40+ hours experience, the dart gun is the only gun the enemy cant hear at all (and even that is only sometimes as the enemy has to be totally isolated - does not work if his buddy is within earshot - I'm all for realism, but that's ridiculous.)
I'm sorry, but if me finding this game extremely boring makes me a boring person, fine with me. I'll stick to MGS for my stealth elements and GTA and Saints Row for my driving around and killing shit element.
The game IS beautiful. I'll give it that.
