It's about time! Okami for the Wii confirmed photo

Let me get this out of the way first … woo hoo!

Eurogamer is reporting that Capcom has (finally!) announced it is bringing its critically adored PlayStation 2 game Okami to the Nintendo Wii in spring 2008.

While the news is very exciting (did you see my “woo hoo?”), it kind of felt inevitable, as Okami screams Wiimote controls from beginning to end. In an obvious statement, Capcom confirmed that the new controls would be used primarily for the Celestial Brush -- the game’s deep painting mechanic -- as well as some additional motion-based combat sequences.

What do you all think? Can you not wait to play through this masterpiece again the way Jesus intended …or do you look at this as just another PS2 to Wii port, a concept nobody should get excited about, let alone support?

Well, it's about time!

Wait, I don't have a Wii.

FUCK!!!

I loved Okami. It was one of my favorite games of all time. However, in my eyes, this is just ANOTHER port for a system that screams ORIGINALITY over anything else.

PS2 port + waggle = FAIL.

I think a true sequel would be better served on the system than a port of the original.

I think this was mentioned in the cblogs. I could be wrong though... :-P

So who is actually doing the port since Clover is no more?

It was spammed to hell in the clogs. Anyways, I think as great as the game is, it's time for the ports on Wii to stop already. Come on devs, look at that controller, I sure you can do something neato like you did with the DS.

Considering no one really played the first one (sales weren't that great) despite the critical aclaim, I'm hoping this breathes a second life into the series showing Capcom that a sequel is warrented and allowing an audience that didn't look twice at teh game one PS2 and chance to pick it up on the Wii.

I think too many people are over-emphasizing the use of the "brush" in Okami.

First off, for 90% of the game you're NOT using the brush, meaning motion controls would likely be unnecessary during these times. First and foremost, the game is a 3D adventure game, in line with the 3D Zeldas. Even the combat in the game is still MOSTLE handled by regular control.

I think it's hilarious how a game with a "drawing" mehchanic (which, by the way, is only normally lines and circles) IMMEDIATELY has thousands of Nintendo lovers crying "It would be PERFECT for the Wii/DS!!"

IT'S A 3D ADVENTURE/RPG!! Not a drawing simulator. It COULD be done on the DS with SEVERELY gimped graphics and a DRASTICALLY changed control scheme (a la Phantom Hourglass), but on the Wii, it honestly seems like it's going to be the EXACT SAME game with a very minor graphics update and minimal motion control.

How does that sound fun?

The only thing good about this is that more people will get to play one of the most gorgeous games ever made. Come on, Capcom! Do a little more marketing for these niche titles! Clover Studios was AWESOME! It's just that no one really knew their games existed.

I disagree. Okami more than most games, is a game that would work well on Wii and DS, because of the drawing aspect of the games. It's that simple people, I'm glad Capcom can see the potential in it and I'm sure it will make Capcom a lot of money with casuals. There's no other action game like it either.

Cheer up people, I'm sure they'll add something new to the Wii mix and if all goes well, Capcom will have money to push a proper sequel out the door. It'll will be nice to see Clover Studios efforts getting more recognition, even after Capcom scrapped them.

I'd love to see a DS version eventually, only a Wii version sales and popularity can make this happen.

@DinnerTimeNinja

How does that sound fun? Well, the game is supposed to be one of the best games of last gen so I'm assuming it's already fun. The brush is just a plus and also lets wait and see what they do with the combat controls before we step on a soapbox and rant about nothing.

I, for one, cannot wait for this game to come out. I've never played the original on the PS2 but I've seen countless videos and read dozens of reviews from players and reviewers alike.
Yea, It's a port..But it's a good goddamn port.

Okami on Wii is actually a very good thing. First off I used the brush quite often in the original. I used the bombs and slash on enemies a lot because I really liked the brush mechanic. Also this is a great opportunity for Capcom to see if Okami can become a franchise. So Okami on Wii FTW.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. Sure it's a PS2 port, but I've heard so much about it and have heard it's pretty much a Zelda game. I never got to play the original and I don't have a PS2 which means it's not as if I can just pick this up. Maybe now I can. Although it's no excuse for another barrage of PS2 ports. Maybe Shadow of the Colossus but that's it.

Ninja, how many action games do casual gamers play? Okami is the kind of thing, in a similar way to Mario Galaxy, that will appeal to casual gamers, and the hardcore gamers, like myself who missed it on PS2.

Capcom like to make money. The PS2 will soon die thanks to Sony's effort with BC on PS3, so if Capcom can make more money on a Wii version and possibly extend the series further, I say do it. The same way that Lost Planet is going to PS3 soon, this is just another step to get new fans for Capcom, and a smart move it is too.

Deal with it. Or sell your Wii, like many of you want to. Are you sure you want to sell it still?

The brush/drawing is central to combat in Okami. It should've been a Wii title before there was a Wii. This just makes sense, and I for one, am glad to play this wonderful game again.

it's a good choice to port, but it's stills a port. I've got like 100 hours on my okami save. I don't plan to start over on another console. good for folks who haven't played the game though.

There aren't that many PS2 ports on Wii, so I don't know where you guys got that from. Okami is welcome on Wii and I know its gonna be cool (hey, I have a PS2 but I'd rather play an imporve Wii cut).

Put away the PS2 port negativity and support this great game, it could easily become a regular Capcom game if we support it. Surely we all want that? I know I do, just like I do Lost Planet and Dead Rising for 360.

I never played Okami so if the Wii version is any good I'll pick it up.

Since it isn't a sequel (due to poor PS2 sales) we'd appriciate it if Capcom could at least improve the graphics so it isn't just motion controls that are the only difference.

I never realized how many people haven't played this yet. Okami was INCREDIBLE.

There is a point where you have to sneak into somewhere by diguising yourself as one of them. The disguise is pretty much a sheet of paper over your face and you get to draw whatever you want on the sheet.

Personally, I drew "^_^" on my cunning diguise.

Plus Ameratsu(sp) is adoreable.

this is an awsome game for the wii audience, its definately age appropriate for the youngins, and just as enjoyable for adults. great introduction title for the more casual gamers into actual gaming, beyond wii sports.

i just hope they market it well, so it gets teh attention it deserves.

then they'll make a lousy sequel and spoil a once visionary title to a shitpile b/c they're idiots for dropping clover.

If they're adding in new controls, the least they could do is throw in some extra content as well so that it's not another straight-up port. It's great that the Wii is getting this, but it does nothing help its reputation as GC v1.5.

This is fantastic news. A fantastic game is coming to a fantastic console. How could this possibly be bad?

Give it a bit of a shine, throw in some waggle (but not too much), simmer and serve. Simple.

I'll be waiting in line for it.

Its to bad that the studio that made this wonderful game will not be able to reap the profits from their awesome work. RIP Clover. I will never forget you and Viewtiful joe and the rest. But this is good news for gamecube owners who didn't have a PS2 and salivated over this game when it came out. And I think that if it had come out on GC, it would have sold substantially more than on the PS2 as the GC audience would have ate up that game.

The PS2 was a great system, but I never owned one. I'm interested in playing the GREAT PS2 games on the Wii, which I do own so long as they are ported over for that reason, because they are GREAT games that deserve another chance with a different audience...not simply to add waggle and cash in. I keep hearing about Shadow of the Colossus, for instance; I watched a video of it on YouTube and it looks incredible. I'd love for someone to bring that game to Wii [no waggle necessary] so I can give it a try without having to buy a PS2.
