It's a long road from here to Manhunt 2: Rockstar's appeal could be a struggle photo

I had reported in an earlier post that Rockstar was going to appeal the BBFC's decision to ban its PS2/PSP/Wii title Manhunt 2 in the United Kingdom. However, as one might imagine, this is not going to be an easy task. Next-Gen today reports that the fight to get the ban lifted may take months of expensive work and even then, the battle may be for a neutered version of the original.

If Rockstar ever succeeds, it could be for nothing but pride now, and the small chance to rub it in the BBFC's face. To sink money into a campaign to release a heavily edited game months after the initial shock value has worn off can be nothing but an act of defiance and little else. Even I have my doubts about this appeal now. It just seems like so much work ... and a fight against outright censorship in the free world should never, ever be so much work. This makes me sad.

I still want to play it, even after the possibility of removed content. Manhunt wasn't bad gameplay-wise, so it's still worth a shot, last-gen or not.

And why don't they release it "Unrated"? The MPAA does it, and they get away with it (The Hills Have Eyes 2 is some sick shit).

I don't think that's legal in England. From what I read, it's illegal to sell entertainment unrated by the BBFC.

If they made an Unrated thing, Sony/Nintendo would just say that Unrated content is not allowed on their consoles. Knowing Rockstar, they'll probably go ahead with it nonetheless.

I don't understand why all action seems to be targeted against the BBFC/'rating givers', instead of spending the resources on a push for AO content on the consoles?

@Chieftan
The Hills Have Eyes 2 was an abomination of film making completely destroying the potential that the remake had set up for a smart, campy and completely disgusting horror film series.

More on topic, I second that sigh.

I just think that there will always be people who will try to censor material, whilst this obviously saddens me, I think artists and designers should be aware of this and just be more creative and smarter about creating mature content.

You can create very disturbing and violent products without providing any material that they can banned. Bioshock looks much more disturbing than Manhunt 2 because the developers have been more creative.

Basically my point is that although censoring material aimed at adults is unacceptable, there is a way around it, you just have to be smart.

The ESRB system is fucked. There's absolutely no need to have an "Adults Only" rating on the scale in the first place. So when a 17 year old turns 18 a magical process takes place in their brain matter making them suddenly emotionally able to handle graphic violence and sex without any problems?

Remove AO, stop the political bullshit pretending to "care about the children". If parents actually did their job instead and monitored the entertainment children brought into the home none of this would be necessary. Parents should be the ones teaching their kids how to deal with these issues. The fact that legislators are sticking their noses in is truly disturbing.

Well I find it difficult to believe that Manhunt 2 can be more 'disturbing' than the likes of the first Manhunt game as well as the Hostel and Saw film franchises. The refusal to rate the film was, despite their denials, a completely political decision and not one based on the content of the game.
