Is your product not in a store? If so, then this analyst declares you the winner photo

Analysts are two things: Annoying and annoying. The latest guy that people seem to want to pay attention to is this dude, Bill Kreher, from A.G. Edwards. According to Kreher, because the Wii and Guitar Hero 2 on the Xbox 360 are impossible to find in 100 random stores, then they are the clear winner. Huh? So actual sales numbers don't matter? That makes no sense. Words of weird wisdom:

"Our results suggest more of the same: winners continue to be Activision and the Wii," Kreher stated.

Yeah, OK, sure. Anyway, according to this random survery conducted, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were readily available. Which, by Kreher's logic, means they are a complete failure. For non-Wii owners, it appears as though the survey also revealed that stores “indicated that they felt availability would be limited through holiday ’07.” Looks like the Wii will be a big winner then!

Hah. That would mean Red Star for the PS2 is an amazing success. Sure.

So if I made one copy of a game that I was developing, and sold it, does that mean I'm the number one developer of all time?

Summa, I know that whether or not a product is on shelves or not isn't the only indicator of whether the product is going to be successful, but it is a big indicator. The Wii is being considered a HUGE success right now. Why? Because you can't find them anywhere. The demand for the Wii is higher than the supply, and Nintendo can't make them fast enough. And yes, you need to look as sales numbers. The Wii sells all 25k that get shipped to the UK every week, and they sold something like 50k in japan, I have no idea how many are shipped to North America, or the rest of the world. But I am sure that they are shipping a good amount.

So say they have been shipping about 200k worldwide every week. And they sell out every week. I would say that is a hugely successful product. I know you like the BS3 and want to back that system up, and there is room for debate on the system. But I can't see how you can argue against the success of the Wii right now. Every number and statistic is against you. The Wii is selling like fucking crazy, and there are no signs of slowdown.

@Linde, awesome. The Red Star is a good game, i wish i still had my PS2 so i could play it. I think it might actually be on shelves now, not sure though. I know one of the guys that worked on the game.

"Which, by Kreher's logic, means they are a complete failure."

By what logic? This isn't math? There is no reciprocal property at work here. He never mentions anything about failure. Why inject the virility on this guy where it doesn't exist. Don't get pissy at the messenger just because your PS3 is struggling to get traction. Clearly, when the supply is strong, as it is with GHII and Wii, then lack of presence in stores represents stronger demand. How does this not mean that Wii and GHII are winners when it comes to maintaining high demand?

"So if I made one copy of a game that I was developing, and sold it, does that mean I'm the number one developer of all time?"

Clearly you didn't read the article linked because he specifically mentions that the supply side is not having problems. In your scenario, you have offered an incredibly limited supply which renders your metaphor completely innaccurate. If the PS3 or 360 were flying off the shelves the way GHII is, they would be loving it I'm sure. Who wouldn't want their product snatched up within hours of it hitting shelves? C'mon. Gimme a break.

Ted, yeah. I'm DYING to get my hands on Red Star, but there was some weird mixup with shipping to some distributors. GameStop keeps pushing my order ship date back, week after week. I haven't seen it on any shelves.

What I meant was that you can hardly consider a game like Red Star, as swell as it is, an unparalleled success just because it's hard to find. The Wii's different, because it's hard to find due to everyone, y'know, buying it. Heheh.

@Linde, yeah. and subnet kind of said what I was thinking too. a game like Red Star, you can't find it because it almost doesn't exist. The supply of the game is at about 6 copies world wide. But the Wii's supply is huge, and they are being continuously sold every week. And yes subnet, Summa is retarded for thinking there is some inverse equation here. The guy isn't saying that neither 360 nor PS3 are a failure, what he is saying is that the Wii and 360 GH2 are the most successful right now. You can't fucking argue against that.

@Summa, you are comparing two COMPLETELY different things. charity and product sales have nothing to do with eachother. If you only had $2 and gave it away, i would say you are retarded. If you had millions and millions of dollars but would only give $2 away, i would say you are greedy.

That and the system are selling in different amount. The Wii is outselling both the PS3 and 360 in raw sales numbers right now. on top of that, they are sold out when the 360 and PS3 are readily available. The wii is "winning" right now because they are selling more and there is still a higher demand for it. How do you not understand this? And why do you keep using analogies that don't work at all?

Well, the Wii sure is a success. No doubts. But don't tell me they don't have serious supply issues. Hell, I had to buy that WiiPlay turd to get a second freakin Wiimote.

This is not caused by success alone.

What do you consider the winner at this point in the race Summa? Are we looking at who is selling the most consoles every week? Then the Wii is winning.

If we were deciding who is selling the least consoles, has the lowest install base, and has the highest pricepoint the PS3 "wins" in all three of those categories.

what is your argument summa?
World Famous's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/24/2007 12:59

"It depends on your definition of "winner," then. Something that wasn't really explained in the article."

Considering the context of the article: companies experiencing demand greater than what they are able to supply, it should be clear what winner means. By the inclusion of GHII as a "winner" he's obviously not speaking of some BS console war that Summa can't let go of. By winner, in this context, he means basically, doing really well, beyond expectations.

oPS3
o360
oWii
oGuitar Hero 2

"My argument is that we know nothing."

Speak for yourself. I know a lot. We have sales numbers for a year and half for 360 and 5+ months for PS3 and Wii. Trends are starting to surface. We also have tons of anecdotal data about online interest in each platform. Going into the 6th months, comparisons start to become more legitimate. We may know little, but certainly not nothing.

Your "argument" was melodramatic and put words in this analysts mouth that didn't exist just to fan some flames. Failure? The idea that this analyst was declaring a failure requires a massive leap that I doubt even you could make in your loftiest Crackdown fever dream. Settle down and enjoy this thing. Competition is good for everyone. It's just hard for you to see it through all the red that you see every time you see a Wii sales statistic.

Sony announced the first round of anticipated price cuts on the PS3 today. The price cuts are expected to take $150 New American Dollars off the retail price (previously $600 NUSD) to a grand total of $450 NUSD. I nearly pooped my pants when I read this news, but that was completely unrelated to the announcement.

In other news, sales figures for the Wii have stagnated at 150 million units, after the release of the Wii+. This leads me to believe that the Wii clearly failed as a platform. The 20 million global PS3 owners look forward to shaming you Wii users soon as your platform has now tanked. HA!

"According to Subnet, the Nazi's really won because they were doing so well in the beginning of WWII."

Ok, as crazy as it is, lets run with the WWII analogy, (considering, thats about all you graphics whores know anything about since that's basically all they make for FPS these days).

So, the Wii = Nazis. I'm guessing the PS3 must equal france, since it's really expensive, elitists think its the bees knees but really it just rolls over and plays dead. So where are the Americans in your analogy? You see the Nazis WERE winning. IF there hadn't been a massive shift in power due to the Americans entering the war the Nazis probably would have won. So your PS3 REALLY REALLY needs some help right now. Maybe the Americans in this analogy could be a $200 price cut? I doubt it. The point is that with massive shift in the landscape, Europe(PS3) would have been fucked. So according to YOUR logic and analogy, without some drastic changes the PS3 is fucked. Your idea. Not mine.

This reminds me of the PR spin when Sony said that their products always being on the shelf meant it was a good thing because it meant that it could be bought. Unlike the Wii, because you know, it loses a customer altogether because he/she didn't get it the first time and didn't ever try again.

@ImOK,

Irony = Now that the PS3 is not doing so well, Robert conveniently wants to wait to declare a winner because with only 6 months since launch we "know nothing" but a few months ago, prior to launch, when we truly DID "know nothing", Robert was all super gung ho to declare a loser.
