Is Xbox 360 packaging getting a visual refresh? photo

With Microsoft set to reveal Project Natal and the "future" of the Xbox 360 at E3, it may also be looking to refresh its visual branding in the retail space.

A number of retailers and publishers are using box art imagery that bears a markedly different "top strip," as seen above. The new box art can be spotted on a number of titles listed at GameStop.com, including Mafia II and a number of others. While retailers are known for creating mock box art in-house for promotional purposes, sources at publishers and developers have told us that they're seeing similar changes being made internally.

It should be noted that the green "wave" seen on the side of this box art is identical in style to what was used in Microsoft's invites to its E3 press events (seen after the jump). If this change comes to pass, it's not a huge deal, but it may signal a bigger effort on Microsoft's part to change consumer perception of its console.

Recently, Sony made a similar move when it introduced the slim PlayStation 3, changing its font and front-facing appearance of its retail box art.

A lot of talk has been around the possible ten year life cycle of these console generation. I think this rebranding is necessary to freshen up the old hardware. We may even start dividing this gen between launch-e3 2010 and what comes next.

Eternalplayer's got a good point! This re-design definitely supports the 10-year plan statements they've made in the past. I'm pleasantly surprised; I didn't think they were serious about that.

I do like the re-design, but is that banner bigger than the old one? It kind of looks like it on the GameStop site.

God, it's ugly. The previous box art let you know it was 360 without trying hard to stick out. This one is just, "I'M GREEN!"

Makes sense, the 360 launched in 2005. This year marks the half-way point in its 10-year lifecycle, time to rebrand/refresh.

Also, XBox Wave.

I see they took away the space for "Only on 360" I guess they realized they won't have any exclusives aside Halo, Gears, Forza, and Fable ever again. Also, while writing this Microsofts owned IPs stay in the alphabet of F-G-H. Fable Forza Gears Halo....interesting

@smartblue.

Yes, anything with green in it instantly has it's brand poisoned now thanks to BP and the oil spill.

I mean, look at what happened with Exxon and anyone who used Red White and Blue in their logo.

...

Anyway, there's nothing about this that particularly compels my interest to do anything. I mean, I bought another Xbox last week for our home. Is that enough to say that this platform is viable enough to hang around for another few years? I don't really know or care where they're taking games from here on out. I think that 3D is a big mistake for us to leap into as gamers, so I don't know where the "next gen" is after HD. Certainly not 3D. Not yet at least. You want to talk dwindling returns and isolated market share... Might as well bundle that with Natal, a Power Glove, and the Super Scope.

I think this Gen's games haven't stopped impressing me with the capabilities of the visuals. I mean, look at games like God of War 3. Or Mass Effect 2. There's no limit to how gorgeous these games can look or how amazing they can be with great stories. These aren't things that would just improve with new hardware refreshes every 3-4 years. Not this time at least.

Please, no. This is not better looking than the old ones. I'll just have to recover all the new ones to keep some uniformity with my collection.

Nintendo is now the only one who hasn't rebranded in the middle of a generation. Then again, Sony and Microsoft are re-branding to be more like Nintendo, so they can try to catch their casual customers, so it makes sense.

@30Sec: 'Xbox Wave' would be an awesome name for Natal. :)

If changing public perception is their goal they should address graver issues like the RROD, E74 and faulty controller build cases instead, prettier boxes won't do anything when the biggest stains in your product are still very present in people's minds, if they don't deal and visibly show the public the results of the efforts to fix all the quality control problems that have plagued the X360 before, i doubt things will change in the public perception department.

@edgydude I think to casual people most of these things aren't prevalent. When RROD was prevalent for launch they answered that with 3 year contract. E74 I've never heard one of my friends ever having this so from that I would have to deduce that it's really rare and I never heard of faulty build cases. I only here about these kinds of things when People with an agenda try to make a point. No matter what Microsoft does (Microsoft haters perception) will never change.

The 360 needs more than new branding. Reach and Gears 3 are big draws, but until they make a product I don't have to have repaired 3 times a year, without having to fight with customer service to get them to do it, I won't be buying a new 360 until the price drops below $50. A turd with a new coat of paint is still a turd.

I'd like to know why there's so many people on here still bitching about the 360's build quality and customer service five years after launch. I've owned a 360 for four years and when I had hardware failures (Last one was in Feb. 2008) the people at 1-800-4-My-Xbox were always very courteous and helpful.

Maybe the people on here had a 360 die out of warranty, caught a CSR on a bad day, or are teenagers stuck with a Wii who trash the HD consoles to make themselves feel better about not having them. I'm not saying the 360 is perfect, but Microsoft is nowhere near as bad as the haters make them out to be.

As for the logo redesign, it's nice. It doesn't remind me of BP, but even if it did I can't recall Microsoft killing off a major body of water and possibly leaving that body of water uninhabitable for decades to come, but I'm sure there's a hater out there that'll find some way to prove me wrong.

I have a launch year 360 and a newer one and neither have ever seen issues. No complaints over here.

However I did recently get a new HDD that killed by backwards compatibility. Which would suck if my fat ugly Xbox wasn't still up and operational.

P.S. I love my XBOX, I play it way more than my PS3 or Wii, and always buy multi-platform games on it.

- The controller feels better
- Online play is much easier to figure out
- Finding friends to join games is simple
- Great games (not that SONY doesn't)
- SONY basically screwed up the first two years of the console.

That being said I want all three consoles to do well, because that means a higher likelihood of awesome games for us all.

In my attempt to care about what the bar at the top of a box looked like, I seemed to have strained so hard that I pooped a little.

Now I still don't care, but now I have to change my underpants.

I guess that's something.
