There's no doubt about it, multiplayer is the gaming industry's favoritist thing ever. If a game doesn't have multiplayer in it these days, it almost seems incomplete. For the non-multiplayer gamer such as myself this is a terrible and scary trend that threatens my very gaming existence, but for most the offer a multiplayer in a game is an added benefit.
Thus, the news that Crystal Dynamics is looking for employees well versed in multiplayer game design for the possible newly revamped Tomb Raider game shouldn't be such a surprise. The company behind the previous (and sadly unfinished) revamp of the franchise is looking for a new lead designer who “demonstrates advanced knowledge of current multiplayer design (systems, ability and technical interface),” and has the “ability to design multiplayer maps from written map designs” while also be able “to work closely and communicate effectively with artists to implement overall vision of those maps.”
The company had been previously looking to hire multiplayer experienced designers back in March of 2009 F**k Yea, Lara Croft says, so this is probably in line with what the rumored revamp has always been intending. With little to no confirmed information on how the new Tomb Raider is going to play, it's hard to say how multiplayer will work, but if it is anything like the previous games the words tacked and on come to mind.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
And ONLY breast size.
Between large, and very large.
Besides, an action/adventure game getting multiplayer nowadays isn't really big news anymore.
So...
Lara Croft Motorboat Sim?
Kinda like 1vs100... except with velociraptors. I like.
I'd totally be the velociraptor if killing Lara meant getting some Tomb Raider hentai.
Anyway, I don't care about multiplayer Tomb Raider.
Publishers know how many people play their games online though... I almost bet they pack in multiplayer for better review scores, since reviewers seem to always ding games under 15 hours that have no multi. And yes, there are some people who rent instead of buy if there is no multi, even if they never even play it.
As for Demigod, I said attempted, only 20-some% even attempted to play Demigod online, so it has nothing to do with trying it and going back to a similar title.
What about Uncharted 2?
Shallow cop out. :( Not saying Tomb Raider has been on any sort of respectable metric in the last... I dunno, decade? Just saying in general. It's likely much cheaper to have a design team make a Map for DM or whatever, versus Story, Cutscenes, writing and so on.
What do you expect? Uncharted 2 quality TR games? If they can make such a good game, why waste it on a franchise as established as TR? They would start an entirely new IP
Besides, TR needs really good single player levels, traps and puzzles, nothing else. I quite liked Underworld, and felt it could have been the launching pad for some more quality raiding of tombs. Still, this revamp might do something good.. though this news hardly bodes well.
They'll likely go the Uncharted route. Multi didn't ruin Uncharted. Single player is as good as it would have been with or without multi.
Just because you put multi in, it doesn't mean the single player is an afterthought.
Oh, and here's a middle finger at people who didn't buy Underworld, the best Tomb Raider yet.
