Is this where PS3s are born?

Is this where PS3s are born? photo

A brand new PlayStation 3 is shiny and impressive when unboxed, and you'd probably never imagine that the slick, gleaming black game console was created in what looks to be an over-packed car garage.

We can't be sure if these pictures from a Chinese forum are legitimate, but CSR Asia says that they  allegedly show a Chinese PS3 factory in action. I always imagined high-tech robotic arms and laser beams doing the assembly work, but the environment in these shots look like a cross between a hospital and a sweat shop.

Honestly, I could believe this. The final assembly process is just sticking all the high-tech components together. Chip fabrication and all the other processes involved in making those components are where everyone wears the space age suits and dance in their fancy assembly lines.

this is a setup. In the dimly lit basement, poorly clothed 3rd world childeren are putting them together with screwdrivers.

@ s0lesurviv0r: I was thinking the same thing. Lint/dust free fabric, perhaps?

And how do the PS3s get from one pink cushion-station to another? Magic jumping powers? I can believe the setting, but some of the methods are a bit questionable.

I work in manufacturing and I'd say this looks like a quality assurance area, so at this point the units are all done and are just going through testing before being boxed and shipped. The "pink" stuff is most likely anti-static wrap of some sort, but also acts as point of use protection, so the units don't get scratched from power strips, conveyors, etc..

I would say this is legit.

If these are fake, someone went to a lot of effort to do so.

I dig the little pink PS3 beds in the third picture. To address whoever asked how they move them, those weird looking arrays of ball bearings are likely a way to slide the PS3s around and then they probably pick them up by hand.

I don't see what's hte problem with those pictures, looks like a nice QA section of the factory, nothing wrong with, or should we have some more sci-fi in there so people could be ok with it??
Corak's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/24/2007 13:16

Agreed it looks like a quailty assurance area. One of the pics had a screen that said "PASS" on it. And the units pictured there are mostly completly assembled. All the sci-fi, intel commercial, production is where the individual components are made, like the processors.

<sarcasm>All that pink clearly shows that the PS3 is the gayest system out there and that anybody who buys one is a total gay who loves the gay cock in the gay behind. Gay.</sarcasm>

No problem until there's a fire and you're standing in the middle of that first pic and there's no way out. The Chinese standard for factory buildings clearly stipulates the width required between machines, and that there be safe passages that run through a factory and allow exit. This place just doesn't have that.

But besides that, the factory is just cluttered; efficiency and productivity are affected because it's going to take longer to just move around. We do a lot of work in Chinese factories on these issues and while it's true that the pictures here look "okay", from a health and safety perspective it's not up to Chinese standards or regulations and it's inefficient. My point in posting them on our site originally was to show how cluttered the factory was (I wouldn't call it a sweatshop).

It's interesting that even on the Chinese forum where these were posted that some people are questioning whether it's legit. I have no idea. But given what we see in China I find it believable. Who knows?

Ffs, of course not. PS3s come out when a PS1 falls in love with a PC and they lay down together in a pink fuzzy mattress. Their love grows so big and deep that the PS3 just pops out. PC must take a ten minute rest before they can do it again.

looks like a final assembly and testing facility, slap on a shiny PS3 shell and away to bru-wai lovers everywhere.

What happened to Sony being a cutting edge innovator? They got out of the plasma biz, begged Samsung to go halfsies on an LCD partnership that Samsung already invested 5 years of R&D...Funny thing is Samsung pulled out of the Japanese electronics market because they owned less than 2% of the market for home gear... Still, Japanese TV buyers are eating up the Sony Bravias consisting primarily of Samsung manufactured parts. Go figure.
Fuck Sony and their shiny thing. $399 isn't bad though.

The pink stuff is a cocoon, which a PS2 spins around itself and slumbers for about a week or so. When that time expires, it breaks out of it's cocoon into a beautiful new PS3.

Keep in mind that Foxconn is the manufacturer for the PS3, Wii, and 360. So... all three consoles are made under these conditions? I don't think so. We've all seen the 360 assembly line photos and videos -- including product testing.

This is not an assembly line. Despite the screens that say "Pass", even product testing has to be done on an assembly line.

My guess is that it's a repair facility, or a corner of the building where they take 1 out of 1,000 units for a more thorough set of diagnostics to check for defects in the assembly process. Testing individual consoles this way would be a real profit buster [for Foxconn].

Is it safe to say now it's pretty much over for PS3? Much like Britney Spears career. Is the system tainted forever? Even with MGS4 being released? How will history look back on the PS3? As a 3DO or as the little engine that eventually could or like a Gamecube. A system that never quite could. Because honestly. At this point. I don't think it could be going any worse for Sony's PS3 if it had been scripted.
