A brand new PlayStation 3 is shiny and impressive when unboxed, and you'd probably never imagine that the slick, gleaming black game console was created in what looks to be an over-packed car garage.
We can't be sure if these pictures from a Chinese forum are legitimate, but CSR Asia says that they allegedly show a Chinese PS3 factory in action. I always imagined high-tech robotic arms and laser beams doing the assembly work, but the environment in these shots look like a cross between a hospital and a sweat shop.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
And how do the PS3s get from one pink cushion-station to another? Magic jumping powers? I can believe the setting, but some of the methods are a bit questionable.
I would say this is legit.
...The pits of hell?
No problem until there's a fire and you're standing in the middle of that first pic and there's no way out. The Chinese standard for factory buildings clearly stipulates the width required between machines, and that there be safe passages that run through a factory and allow exit. This place just doesn't have that.
But besides that, the factory is just cluttered; efficiency and productivity are affected because it's going to take longer to just move around. We do a lot of work in Chinese factories on these issues and while it's true that the pictures here look "okay", from a health and safety perspective it's not up to Chinese standards or regulations and it's inefficient. My point in posting them on our site originally was to show how cluttered the factory was (I wouldn't call it a sweatshop).
It's interesting that even on the Chinese forum where these were posted that some people are questioning whether it's legit. I have no idea. But given what we see in China I find it believable. Who knows?
"I thought angels pooped them out?"
Ffs, of course not. PS3s come out when a PS1 falls in love with a PC and they lay down together in a pink fuzzy mattress. Their love grows so big and deep that the PS3 just pops out. PC must take a ten minute rest before they can do it again.
What happened to Sony being a cutting edge innovator? They got out of the plasma biz, begged Samsung to go halfsies on an LCD partnership that Samsung already invested 5 years of R&D...Funny thing is Samsung pulled out of the Japanese electronics market because they owned less than 2% of the market for home gear... Still, Japanese TV buyers are eating up the Sony Bravias consisting primarily of Samsung manufactured parts. Go figure.
Fuck Sony and their shiny thing. $399 isn't bad though.
This is not an assembly line. Despite the screens that say "Pass", even product testing has to be done on an assembly line.
My guess is that it's a repair facility, or a corner of the building where they take 1 out of 1,000 units for a more thorough set of diagnostics to check for defects in the assembly process. Testing individual consoles this way would be a real profit buster [for Foxconn].
