Is this some amazing Assassin's Creed concept art? photo

When we at the Dtoid staff saw this bit of concept art possibly produced for Assassin's Creed, our collective jaws hit the floor. The assumption has long been that someday the game would be taken into the modern era, something all but confirmed by the ending of Assassin's Creed 2. This might be what Desmond has to look forward to in an upcoming game.

The image, taken from the artist's portfolio website (which has lots of other great art on it), is dated 2007. Since that's the same year as the first game's release, when work would have started on sequels, it's in the appropriate time frame for Ubisoft to have wanted it. While the artist's resumé doesn't explicitly state having worked for Ubisoft, this could fall under her freelance work in "Ongoing Character Commission Work." Or it might not. Hard to say, but I can dream.

I really, really hope that this is what will come down the pipe for a third title. I love that he's wearing the more simplistic robes that Altair wore and the contrast that has to the high-tech weaponry. Make this happen, people!

Hmm, I wouldn't like it at all if AC turned into another shooter, which is what guns would imply...

I think a modern or future setting will be amazing... But this pic is kninda retarded... If that big ass gun is on the battlefield I'd want more than a sword, knife and robe to protect myself. The assassins would know better. I'm not saying go full mjolnir but they'd a-cook-a somthing up-a..........

I really don't think this piece has been created for AC. Her resume states that she only worked for Midway and Ubi Montreal don't hire freelance people. And look at the size of this gun: a bit over-the-top for a franchise that has always been pretty subtle about design.
And I really hope they'll keep that approach when they finally get to a modern period.

And in all seriousness; if this is real, it's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. He's an assassin, not Marcus Phoenix. He should be carrying some kind of sexy future-knife, and a silenced pistol; not...whatever the hell that thing is.

Agree with AutmnWindz. The main unique selling point of the Assassin's Creed series is that it wasn't another shooting game. Why would they want to tread on Just Cause and Crackdown's toes?

Add my voice in quick agreement: this takes a giant crap all over previous character designs. Plus it just looks like blatant fan art, not really concept art at all.

So, I remain skeptical and unimpressed.

No.
I was promised Feudal Japan, Ubisoft. Feudal Japan! Even if he carried dual pistols, Akimbo style, it might be salvageable, but if anything resembling this automatic cannon of a gun features, I'll be ignoring AC3 like the plague, regardless of how much I enjoyed the second in the series.

I think it looks pretty neat. I can see why people don't like it though, it doesn't match the style of the other games and I can't think how you would jump around buildings with that big lug on your back.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more this would make no sense. AC's main points are its freerunning/platforming and its relatively stealth-based tactics. Having a giant machine gun not only renders any intricate freerunning navigation of environments null, it is also amazingly unstealthy. It's called Assassin's Creed for a reason, because there are Assassins that follow a Creed. A Creed that pretty much rules out giant machine guns as weapons.

Everyone forgot the big (Spoiler I guess), the big rescue mission the Assassins attempted in the first AC. That group went in guns blazing, & failed. But they weren't taught to fight by granpa Ezio. That's all Desmond, & I'm betting he can whoop heiny with the best of 'em!

Having said that, they pretty much introduced gunplay into the series with Ezio wrist gun, albeit a more subdued effort.

A sword and a sniper rifle might make sense. But this? Just, no.
Artwork is nice though.

I hope I didn't miss the memo where that IS a sniper rifle...

Short answer: no.
Long answer: noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Longer answer: If she was employed at Ubisoft during the time in question, she would have listed it alongside her Midway employment. This is just fan art. Very nice fan art, but fan art nonetheless. Why don't you guys do some fact checking before you post - or at least use a more sensible headline? C'mon, don't be Kotaku.

Obviously Desmond is going to have a lot more to do in whatever AC games are still to come, but I'm still hoping that further games are still going to be focused around ancestor memories like the two so far.

Unless they completely rethink the gameplay and mess around with what they nailed awesomely good with AC2 (well in most peoples eyes *cough* 4.5 what the!!*cough*), its hard to imagine a completely modern AC game with guns. I think the developers kind of realised that when in the few moments of fighting Abstergo employees in AC2, there were NO guns.

I agree that a silenced pistol and a sniper rifle would work better, for both the concept piece and the game it's based on. That gun is bigger than he is, ffs.

LOL there was stealth in assassins creed?

The game was that easy i used a sledgehammer and just beat the shit out of all the guards, and the PISTOL? HOW is that stealthy....

Topped off with WHAT THE FUCK A HANGLIDER......yeah stealthy. Lighting 30-40 fires around the city and flying across it in a massive wood and leather aircraft.... Yeah.... stealthy.

Tenchu, now THEY were stealth games.

Also they will have guns in the third assassins creed what kind of guard doesn't carry a gun. Getting hit by an arrow and surviving? is a bit 5 to 1 but being shot at by a shotgun and not being knocked over/murdered = 0

Im figuring he's going to carry something.

Wow, that is the most retarded looking gun I have ever seen - the character can't even get his hand around the grip so the artist just kinda shaded it out - weak. Give me a box of pencil crayons and my old social studies notebook and I will blow Ubisoft's MIND!!!!

I'd say that was just a fan piece, just judging by the size of the gun and other little hints that my artists eye can spot.

That's what assassins want, big ass weapons so they can fail their missions even before they start it.
The person that drew that piece of crap has to know: Gears of War look-alike weapons != Assassins weapons.

...I'd say this just seems like fanart...

...And it's fine if they wanna keep using guns but beyond pistols and silenced pistols... No please. I'm not saying stealth is a major concern for me in assassin's creed so much as it is important for the game to remain 'sly' if you catch my drift.

While it very may be concept art, I don't think it will be. Assassin's Creed would be horribly stupid if they gave you a long range weapon.

This is horrible. It is obvious that it will never happen and thank god it won't. First of all AC is not meant to be a shooter, no. Second, for god's sake an Assassin would never need a gun that size. Not even a regular sized rifle, maybe a pistol at max.
Sorry Conrad, but I don't respect your anticipation for this concept art.

Desmond is the blandest character in the series and the whole sci-fi-matrix-da-vinci code thing is completely innocuous. I wish they would drop it altogether but since that is obviously not going to happen, I hope they keep the time spent with Desmond at a minimum like in AssCreed 2. I am not looking forward to bouncing across rooftops with an assault rifle, blasting Templars like I'm Rambo McRageboner. Don't we have enough of those games already?

Besides, looking at more stuff, think she was just messing around, to show her hand at art itself.
This chick, forgot her name, also had the Flash (as in from DC comics) punching Kratos, which I thought was pretty cool, even if I'm not sure why I liked it.
But that's art for ya!

@ TheTruth - That's not Kratos, it's Quan Chi. I remember those pieces from the endings in Mortal Kombat vs. DC. Probably the best parts of that game.

I would love to see Assassin's Creed in a modern setting and that is almost certainly what we will eventually.
I am not too sure about that huge gun though, it does not really look to be in keeping with the stealthy nature of the Assassins.

I'm betting the next game will be a mix of Assassin Creed 2 & Splinter Cell Conviction. From what I've seen of Conviction, that wouldn't be a bad combo if they can pull it off.

Also, who thinks they'll handle all the flashback sequences like they handled the Altair love scene (spoiler!) one in AC2. Falling into those segments at will, different eras, different assassins.

i think this concept art lloks awesome but i think it would be a horrible game if this was in it. i doubt it is real though because at the end of AC2 (spoiler) Des gets a hidden blade and can pick up a sword. I dont think Ubi would go and change it all of a sudden after all of that.
