When we at the Dtoid staff saw this bit of concept art possibly produced for Assassin's Creed, our collective jaws hit the floor. The assumption has long been that someday the game would be taken into the modern era, something all but confirmed by the ending of Assassin's Creed 2. This might be what Desmond has to look forward to in an upcoming game.
The image, taken from the artist's portfolio website (which has lots of other great art on it), is dated 2007. Since that's the same year as the first game's release, when work would have started on sequels, it's in the appropriate time frame for Ubisoft to have wanted it. While the artist's resumé doesn't explicitly state having worked for Ubisoft, this could fall under her freelance work in "Ongoing Character Commission Work." Or it might not. Hard to say, but I can dream.
I really, really hope that this is what will come down the pipe for a third title. I love that he's wearing the more simplistic robes that Altair wore and the contrast that has to the high-tech weaponry. Make this happen, people!

i give it a 4.5 as well.
And I really hope they'll keep that approach when they finally get to a modern period.
And in all seriousness; if this is real, it's the dumbest thing I've ever seen. He's an assassin, not Marcus Phoenix. He should be carrying some kind of sexy future-knife, and a silenced pistol; not...whatever the hell that thing is.
So, I remain skeptical and unimpressed.
I was promised Feudal Japan, Ubisoft. Feudal Japan! Even if he carried dual pistols, Akimbo style, it might be salvageable, but if anything resembling this automatic cannon of a gun features, I'll be ignoring AC3 like the plague, regardless of how much I enjoyed the second in the series.
Having said that, they pretty much introduced gunplay into the series with Ezio wrist gun, albeit a more subdued effort.
Artwork is nice though.
I hope I didn't miss the memo where that IS a sniper rifle...
Long answer: noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Longer answer: If she was employed at Ubisoft during the time in question, she would have listed it alongside her Midway employment. This is just fan art. Very nice fan art, but fan art nonetheless. Why don't you guys do some fact checking before you post - or at least use a more sensible headline? C'mon, don't be Kotaku.
4.5
Unless they completely rethink the gameplay and mess around with what they nailed awesomely good with AC2 (well in most peoples eyes *cough* 4.5 what the!!*cough*), its hard to imagine a completely modern AC game with guns. I think the developers kind of realised that when in the few moments of fighting Abstergo employees in AC2, there were NO guns.
The game was that easy i used a sledgehammer and just beat the shit out of all the guards, and the PISTOL? HOW is that stealthy....
Topped off with WHAT THE FUCK A HANGLIDER......yeah stealthy. Lighting 30-40 fires around the city and flying across it in a massive wood and leather aircraft.... Yeah.... stealthy.
Tenchu, now THEY were stealth games.
Also they will have guns in the third assassins creed what kind of guard doesn't carry a gun. Getting hit by an arrow and surviving? is a bit 5 to 1 but being shot at by a shotgun and not being knocked over/murdered = 0
Im figuring he's going to carry something.
The person that drew that piece of crap has to know: Gears of War look-alike weapons != Assassins weapons.
and that concept art looks like balls.
NEVER FORGET
I hope to god this doesn't happen. I actually like AC, and guns definitely would not help gameplay at all...
...And it's fine if they wanna keep using guns but beyond pistols and silenced pistols... No please. I'm not saying stealth is a major concern for me in assassin's creed so much as it is important for the game to remain 'sly' if you catch my drift.
Sorry Conrad, but I don't respect your anticipation for this concept art.
Work on less bugs and animation glitches, yes. Change the gameplay into a shooter...God no.
This chick, forgot her name, also had the Flash (as in from DC comics) punching Kratos, which I thought was pretty cool, even if I'm not sure why I liked it.
But that's art for ya!
I am not too sure about that huge gun though, it does not really look to be in keeping with the stealthy nature of the Assassins.
Also, who thinks they'll handle all the flashback sequences like they handled the Altair love scene (spoiler!) one in AC2. Falling into those segments at will, different eras, different assassins.
