Modern Warfare 2 level about (SPOILER) confirmed photo

SPOILERS, first of all.

Secondly: what you see above may be a leaked gameplay video from Modern Warfare 2. We're currently awaiting comment from both Infinity Ward's PR guys and the community manager, Robert Bowling. Before one gets one's panties in a twist about the subject matter, do keep in mind that this could be fake.

Update:  The video has been confirmed.  Get the details about this level as explained by Infiniti Ward.

Update 2:  Activision has asked us to remove the video, so we've replaced it with a photo of a donkey.

You're evidently looking at footage of a Modern Warfare 2 level in which the player is put in the shoes of a terrorist. A terrorist who, evidently, is part of a group of other terrorists who have stormed an airport and begun shooting civilians haphazardly.

This would not be particularly noteworthy were it not for the fact that, judging from the video, the player has absolutely no one to shoot at except for civilians for at least the first four to five minutes of the level. This scene was hinted at in the game's early trailers, but never in this context.

One can only imagine the media sh*tstorm that is soon to follow.

[Thanks, covah!]

it is true...this is what i was talking about yesterday on the bioshock post...
but u dont play as a terrorist, u r a agent ...the end of this part explains all.
i think this is awesome...and thats why iw didnt want to this to leak.

Look, there's challenging an audience with difficult material, and then there's just utter tastelessness. If IW believes that the gamer audience in general is mature enough to handle something like this, good for them. They are of course dead wrong. When the YouTube videos of "Yakkity Sax" playing while airline patrons attempt to limp away from their killers hit, then it's just fucking over.

This had better be fake.

And even if it's not, Fox will still fall on this like a vulture on a gazelle carcass. This shit is too good for them to pass up, whether it's real or fake. The fact that it exists and looks like a hot video game about to be released is enough for them to get several "well, it's a hoax but it's pretty damn close to the real game" stories out of it.

I think that it's real and I applaud IW for taking such a bold approach...this takes real balls, but as long as they agreed to staunchly support their decision to go this route long before launch, they'll be fine when the proverbial shit hits the fan.

Also, the guy commenting during the video is a tool and should think about killing himself ASAP.

BECAUSE THEY'RE CIVILIANS!!!

Thats the point.

What's more controversial... shooting terrorists, nazis, and aliens... OR shooting people who are in line waiting for a plane?

I don't have a problem with the level.

I do have a problem with this guys horrific attitude to what could very well be the first true moral choice in a game.

seriously this looks like it could be really intense and emotional when played in context.
I think what makes it seem so bad is the commentary in the video, that guy is a twat.

I respect that you're a videogame news website and that this is quite a big story but can we refrain from having spoilers in the headline? I think this level would have been even more excellent with the surprise that it would have brought with it.

Sure its just a game. But will the media and parents see it that way? Of course not. This game is going to get pounded, and extremely hard at that. I have a feeling the rating will be bumped up and large chain retailers like Walmart will refuse to sell it. Just like GTA. This will not end well at all.

It's a cool idea, and I have no problems with it artistically, but I don't think I personally would enjoy playing that level. I play games to stop the bad guys, not become one of them.

I'll say this, Infinity Ward looks to be crafting a game that's going to eclipse Modern Warfare in every way possible.

Tasteless. I love how that fact to some people is synonymous with "progress" or some grand "expanding the boundaries of the art." And yes, I find GTA tasteless as well. And this is not to say you are horrible for playing it or enjoying it, but a game titled "Call of Duty" should have some dignity and respect to it.

And every second that IW doesn't respond to this is dreadful because if it IS FAKE... then there would be no reason to delay up-and-down denying this clip.

Jesus, the guy playing is an asshole. I desperately hope that this section (assuming it is real) is either cut from the game or edited. But if this hypothetical level isn't cut or severely edited, I imagine that the choice to shoot and kill civilians (In this context, anyway. Games like Prototype where it's over the top and pretty much unavoidable is probably a different thing)is up to the player, like in certain sections of the first Modern Warfare has you either killing or ignoring enemies that aren't yet a threat. So, you could either play like the psychotic jackass above or make the choice to move on with the mission and leave the civvies alone.

My guess: this totally legit.
Infinity Ward does some really ground-breaking things when it comes to making the player think about what they're doing. This is probably the player being an undercover operative amidst a terrorist cell where things have gone wrong in the storyline. No can say IW doesn't have balls, that's for sure.

If it's real, then I think people (the media -- ie Fox News) is going to get worked up for nothing. I can hear them practicing the precise way to say the words "murder simulators" already.

But seriously, it's only one level in the game (which may or may not be skippable?) Yes you're shooting civilians but it is part of a bigger story and you don't play as this terrorist for the entire game. And I'm pretty sure the character in the clip isn't being painted in a good light by the game.

I'm rolling my eyes so hard at all the ignorant Fox News comments, they are about to disappear into my head.

The only way I can rationalize this level is maybe it helps drum up anger towards the game's antagonists by allowing you to actually play as them and see the devastation they cause? I'm not sure, but the guy's commentary seemed a bit fake if that makes any sense.

I want to know the context before I pass judgment. I didn't finish the vid, maybe the d-bag narrator explained the context later (sorry too busy failing in DJ Hero), but I missed it.

This has however bumped the original up in my Gamefly queue so I can jump into this. I'm now very interested. If this leak (or this move in general) was a sneaky tactic in getting totally uninterested people to play the game then IW wins.

I am of two minds.

On the one, this mission, if handled well (as IW has a habit of doing) will probably be a very profound experience that allows the player to enter the mindset of a terrorist (or the life of a CIA operative) in a way that no other game really has. GTA might allow wanton murder of civilians, but it never has a real narrative drive.

On the other hand, whether it's in the game or not, there's probably going to be an achievement like, "Shot all of the innocents in the face" or "Osama been practicing" or something like that to go f*ck it all up.

I don't support the killing of innocents, but honestly my response to this was:
FUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Its just so bold and interesting, that I want to do it.

Also the game's being played in French, is there anyone with enough fluency out there to make out the kind of blurry wording?

Now this... This is Controversy. I feel like what will make or break the game is whether or not this scene services the story in a legitimate way. Since it's Infinity Ward here, i have my full faith that it does. They wouldn't put it in their game if it had no context. although the scene itself is horrid to me, I'm glad that a respected developer is willing to push the boundaries of how to tell a story in videogames. After all, stories are all about eliciting a reaction, and this one sure did for me.

I don't know if this has been brought to every ones attention but there are TONS of clues in the video if people would just PAY ATTENTION.

POINT 1:
This is NOT the first level, at all. If you watch the player choose the Airport level you can clearly see he chooses the 2nd last level of the first act.

POINT 2:
As you watch the briefing movie, you can clearly see the CIA login morph into the red star with the sickle and hammer and then written underneath is the words (in CAPS) CIA DEEP COVER OPERATION. This leads me to believe that this is a completely playable level and since we don't know what the story elements are BEFORE this level (as it si the 2nd last level of the first act) we do not know if this CIA operative will be seen puking his guts up in moral outrage because of what he must do with these Russians (Makarov). So that being said, you are technically a GOOD GUY (or neither completely GOOD or completely BAD) and you are doing this as a necessary evil which must be committed to maintain your deep cover status, which as we see at the end .... SPOILER:

Doesn't help you crap all, since you get capped in the face. IN THE FACE.

POINT 3:
Those of the delusional kind who are calling "fake", get your head checked. You are just morally confused because for once a video game is showing the GREY side of a conflict (not completely good, not completely bad) and apparently if everything in videogame land is neither black or white your pretty little head may explode. Also, I doubt very strongly that someone modded something this immersive and this quickly with having little subject matter to go on. If you PAY ATTENTION to the video, you can clearly see the player walk over 3 new weapons, 1) A Belgian FN2000, 2) An MP5 Kommando (stubby little MP5) as well as a new type of Shotgun. This also goes to show that this sequence is totally playable and you are not watching a "horror show on the rails".

NOW, I am all for this sequence and applaud IW for bringing this context to the world of gaming. It also lets you see what a cold-hearted psycho Makarov is, and if he is able to out a CIA deep cover operative, then he is also highly resourceful and crazy effin dangerous.

Now we can move forward.

...or you could just not shoot anyone while going through this level. has anyone thought of that. what if this is a "story trigger" level which decides the outcome of the whole game based on the number of innocent lives you wasted....0 kills you go one path, killing only the police takes you in another direction, and killing everybody will take you down a third avenue in the game's story. i think IW wants the player's morals to decide the outcome. and this gives the game more replay value. or maybe IW wanted to show some dick head gamers how going on a rampage feels like and how there are ramifications to it. but seriously, what is the difference between this and a movie showing a group of terrorists mowing down civilians something like die hard 2. oh this one is more interactive, what a bunch of hypocrites, those who act repulsed at such footage. this is game is reflecting what happens in real life on a daily basis, people are killed, either by radicals or legitimately by governments(governments legitimize their kills as bringing freedom to the people). shit happens get over with it.
