Is there a valid reason for the absence of mods for UT3 on the Xbox 360? photo

If you have been holding your breath, waiting for news from Microsoft that mods for the upcoming  Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III were still a possibility --- well, you might want to start breathing again, lest you perish. According to Microsoft's Chris Satchell, it opens up security holes that are just asking for trouble:

"There's a lot of people out there that just want to prove they can screw things up... Any platform that lets you do that, and doesn't have the right security measures in place -- whether it's Sony, whether it's Nintendo, whether it's Apple, whether it's anyone -- you're inviting trouble, because sooner or later someone will want to prove they can do it."
Now if you read the interview in its entirety, you will notice that he is cautious not to mention UT3 specifically -- but we all know that has been a big point of contention for those with an Xbox 360 looking for an experience equal to what "the other guys" have to offer. As WIRED pointed out, we too wonder how the XNA Creator's Club is going to figure into all of this. Not to fan the flames of valid paranoia, but Microsoft does have a tendency to be a hacker's paradise. Still, it would be nice to see Xbox 360 owners enjoy one of the best parts of games such as UT3 ... the mods. I think Mystikal said it best.

[Via WIRED -- Thanks, Jonathan!]

Microsoft wants to make money of map packs! that's the only reason, if they allowed user content creation they won't make money off their lil DLC scams!

Considering there's over 40 free maps, over 15 skins, different mutators only gotten thrue download all FREE..this just seems like their getting their excuses ready.

I honestly think it's about DLC and money.

I really don't think there's any reason to NOT have mods on the X360 version. These concerns for security sound like bullshit. Especially considering how the PS3 network has yet to explode.

Damn Microsoft, and there over priced DLC ploys! I'd rather have them say the same crap they said about OPTIONAL installs with games like DMC4 and so on. You know, the whole spiel about not everyone who owns a 360 has a hdd to take advantage of it and whatnot.

yea, I've got to agree with popular opinion here - seems to me that M$ would rather sell maps 3 for $10 than even entertain the idea of letting users create maps *gasp* for FREE. Oh teh noes - it's the end of teh world if MS can't squeeze every penny out of us!!!

In the long run, I think this sort of attitude is going to hurt MS and the 360. If good user created content becomes a trend on the PS3, guess which version of multiplatform games I'll buy in the future?

The people at Microsoft need a one-way ticket on the Butt-Hurt Train.

bla, UT has been poor now for quite a while, the metacritic score (ps3) is good but not great. Microsoft has always been target no 1 so maybe this is fair enough, smells like an excuse though.

If the 360 version doesn't support mods I guess I'll just have to wait until I buy a PS3. M$ is dropping the ball on this one big time.

Until someone can launch and distribute malicious code through a mod-able console game (UT3), Satchell's argument against this issue is pure bullshit. I have more to rant about this but I think I'll save it for a Cblog.

They're trying to figure out a way to charge for mods is what it is.

I personally do not see an issue with custom maps, models and some basic scripting for the game being allowed. But I do personally see there is at least a grain of truth to what they are saying.

I would hate if too much freedom allowed for malicious code to destroy systems or open other vulnerabilities. I know in the past Unreal and other games would simply download any maps etc automatically(I think the PS3 does this on UT3) and I could actually see this being an issue on the console. Even if there is no way to use malicious code what about maps and models that are offensive Racially,Pornographically, etc(I sure as hell don't want to see a level with Gotse textured on all the walls and tubgirl playing on virtual screens).

This may already be in place but there definitely needs to be a system for these games so you can limit downloads at least on a personal level. Maybe to only downloading from friends or not at all so you have to manually install all of them. Maybe some community site could be set up to rate content and maybe that rating could be tied into options in the game as trusted content verifying filename, byte size, etc.

So in other words, the answer is no, they don't have a reason.

Unreal Tournament is all about the mods for me, Which is why the PC version would be best. But bearing in mind that my PC is pathetic, The PS3 is the version I would buy. The 360 version is a joke without it.

Why let people have free content when they can charge for it? That will ruin Xbox Live Marketplace's scam.

I don't like the UT series but I bought it any way simply because of the many future MODS and sure enough there 3 future MODS that can't wait to play

Resident Evil Outbreak MOD
Stargate SG-1 MOD
Skateboard MOD

And they will all be free :)

These really need to happen if the 360 is to remain competitive.

Well yes Money for DLC is the main reason but security holes are also something to be cautious with.... Just like the exploit on Zelda for the Wii (which was patched) this can potentially make 360 an Xbox 1 like type of open environment where you can launch emu's, backups and all the stuff that would make M$ cry...
