This isn't very exciting. I can buy the originals for $15; or the HD version for full retail, naturally I'm buying the PS2 originals.
I could spend money on these in HD, or I could use my plenty backwards compatible PS3 to play them on my definitely not HD TV, and buy new and different games I don't already own, instead.
They ought to do a Metal Gear Solid 2 and especially MGS 3 Subsistence. I love MGS 3, but I feel it probably came out a generation too early. I know, I'm in the minority on that one.
If this gives more credibility to the Team ICO HD collection then I am all over this. I just hope that if ICO does get an HD tune up, that they do it to the European/Japanese version. I want my proper wind mill puzzle, damn it.
Even though Sony would be a fool not to exploit their amazing game library for their consoles, I sure wish they would make a PS2 emulator for PS3.
They could have both, I would gladly pay for a Jak And Daxter collection, even though I already own them for PS2, but I would like to be able to play my old games. I don't think Sony would lose anything on that when the PS2 is no longer selling.

Ya know, all Xboxes are backwards compatible with over 85% of--J/K this does suck, although after my PS2 broke and I stopped playing it, I did miss out on some cool games. I wouldn't mind playing AAA classics in HD. I'm surprised MS hasn't done this. They're usually the money-hungry ones. Mirite guyz?! M$ Mirite!?

I'd rather have the controls of MGS 3 as it was, honestly. Well, as it was in Subsistence. Far better in Subsistence than the regular Snake Eater version.

Wait anyone complaining about this? for some it might be an excellent opportunity to pick up old classics they missed....
Its basically the same as them releasing Psone classics on psn i actually had to sell a few PS2 games i wouldnt mind seeing a HD version of. MGS 2 and 3 sadly and Zone of the emnders would be so much WIN!

These OBVIOUSLY wouldn't be full retail price. Only one that I think should/could get away with it is the Team Ico double pack.
Well I didn't know Sony was personally fishing Dtoid's comments section for suggestions. In *that* case: Okami + Persona please. Two awesome-looking franchises that I never got to play.

I think this idea will work IF they bundle franchises together. Like how they are doing with the Sly Cooper series. Let's face it, blu-ray games can hold the amount, and then some. Hell, give me Resident Evil HD 1-4 in one disc, Silent Hill HD 2-4 in one disc, Tekken HD 3-5 in one disc, GTA HD 3-SA in one disc, Burnout HD 2-Dominator in one disc, Twisted Metal HD 2-Black in one disc, Mortal Kombat HD DA-Armageddon, etc... I'd be more than happy to pay $60 for bundled packages.
@Rammstein: Backwards-compatibility was phased out hardware-wise, not patched out. It was never a software problem, it was the actual hardware the PS2 games needed being removed from the PS3 internals that put backwards compatibility to the sword.
fuck yes, i was a tad annoyed when my first-gen ps3 broke and had to get a slim, but now hopefully my prayers have been answered.
I would prefer that they didn't make some stupid series name for this. Hogs up even more cover art that PS3 games already have barely any of, and it's just a really unnecessary branding gimmick. I mean, the only other time they did this was with God of War, and I doubt that there's going to be a whole bunch of these HD-ified last-gen games for this to be justified into having a series name.

I really hope they're doing this. Even though I love my PS3's backwards compatibility at this point I'd much rather play some older games with proper HD output and maybe a few other updates.

If they did the gta games and the warriors I'd deffinately run out and pick up a ps3. Playing the old gta games on the 360 is aweful. And no support for the xbox version of warriors really sucks ass. I miss hearing all the funny shit Ajax says "what? Are you guys goin fagget?". Classic!

I don’t think I’ll pick up this particular one but if there is a classics HD line then holy shit, I’d pick up a team Ico one seeing as how I missed Ico, and SotC would be amazing with an update, Devil May Cry would great too, and though it’s not quite old enough to be considered classic Persona 3 and 4 on one disc would be heaven.

Well, this bodes well for the rumored Team Ico collection that i suspect will pop up in time for the release of The Last Guardian much like the GoW trilogy did for GoW3, also, has anyone else considered other collections for stablished IPs? i'm thinking MGS and Persona collection somewhere down the line.

@ Handy - Not really; Nintendo already tried this and failed spectacularly. We don't even have Pikmin 2 New Play! Control in North America because of how badly the previous New Play Control iterations were received, and even Metroid Prime Trilogy was cancelled after 600,000 sales. 600,000 is a lot for the cost, but it's not much for a Metroid Prime game.
@ wickedsickZombie - I would greatly apreciate that provided there is some bridging in the game. I'm really confused why half of Organization XIII was killed before I even began the game, and the deal with Roxas' involvement with the organization also confuses me. I am not buying a PSP to find out the answers to questions that should have been answered before Kingdom Hearts 2 came out, so having some explanation, maybe a 2 hour CGI movie between the games, would help a lot.

Hope this lasts, there are many PS2 games that can help make this collection line last unlike the "Play! Control" line.
Jayc4life: Oh, I'm well aware of that fact(PS3slim owner here) but I remember reading here on Dtoid that Sony plans to patch backwards compatibility out completely in a firmware update that renders ALL PS3's unable to play PS2 games(most likely to make money from a 'Classic Hits' line). That's what I was asking about.
@ Xyliac - to be fair most PS3's don't have backwards compatibility because Sony ripped it out when they came out with their Slim models. Not only that, but Sony has sold a lot more PS2's and PS3's with backwards compatibility than PS3's lacking the capability. If Wii couldn't support New Play! Control with 30,000,000 + gamers that never owned a gamecube, how can Sony support this with a population that almost universally has access to a system that can play PS2 games?
I would have a hard time believing that the magjority of PS3 owners today don't have a PS2, considering how the PS2 sold 5 times as many systems and todays PS3 owners probably bought the PS3 for sequels to games on the PS2 and blu-ray, much like PS2 owners would often buy the system for DVD playback.

Well if you have a ps2 or DS you'd be set. The gba game covers that all, as well as the DS. But if youre looking for a cutscene.....the beginning of KH2 is all you needed. It's nothing to even worry about. The PSP has nothing except Birth By Sleep, currently Nintendo seems like the "bridging" platform

That backwards compatibility is about $100 of the value of my PS3 to me, is the primary reason I couldn't buy a slim, and removing it is so rediculously anti-consumer, I could never trust a Sony product to maintain its features again.
So I really need a source for that.

@ KalosBlue - Nah, I dislike spin-offs, and I heard that the card-game Kingdom Hearts didn't answer much. I was kind of hoping the current KH storyline would be completely abandoned in favor of a new, simpler one, or that Kingdom Hearts 3 does a good job explaining things if they refuse to ditch their mess of a story. The easiest way would be to make a Kingdom Hearts Movie if they insist ton option 2, much like Final Fantasy: Birth by Sleep.
