Is the Xbox 360 getting a Virtual Console? photo

Here's a little bit of Tuesday morning intrigue for you -- A number of sites have posted an announcement that the Xbox 360's Fall Update is bringing with it a Virtual Console of sorts -- allowing you to download original Xbox games via Xbox Live. However, the CVG article which is said to be the source has been removed.

If true, the first titles available on the new Xbox download service will be Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3 and will be priced at 1200 Microsoft Points. Not too shabby, though I could pick up a real copy of Halo for four queenquids pretty easily.

Other news includes European accounts having access, at last, to a Video Marketplace. Good news for people who don't know what torrenting is. It's basically a rental service in which customers have to watch the video within 24 days before access is removed. A solid start date for this service has not been confirmed.

The Fall Update itself is coming on December 4th, and could be very exciting indeed if all this hullabaloo is to be believed.

Is it just me, or are those yucky titles that you could get for $5 at GameStop if you actually wanted them?

It's not just you. And their video service is a rip-off.

Microsoft couldn't even do backwards compatabilty right. Like this is going to last long before it gets swept aside as well?

It's a cool idea. I don't see why anyone would not want the option to get old Xbox games. I just think that it wont be as successful as the Wii's virtual console as, like you said, we can still get a lot of these games on hard copy pre-owned for cheaper.

I can see myself using this for Xbox games that might have been Japan only or were very rare to find. That would be sweet.

You realize they're going to add achievements to those titles to try to entice you, right?!

Wait. If it doesn't come until December 4th, wouldn't that make it the WINTER Update?

Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy as it's called for those of us that have shaken free from that tyrant King George III) was a cool adventure game. Even though the story seems to smack of being made up by a gamer on a forum I won't write it off quite yet.

I'd rather they just work on increasing the backwards computability list. It's not like it isn't all that hard to find copies of Xbox games.

Oh is that what Farenheit is? I might actually get that if this is true. I'd probably get Otogi as well if they released it.

Yeah, I'm all for digital distribution if there are improvements (i.e. VC gives progressive scan, no loss of battery-save, etc.), but if it's really recent games that I can I still run on both my Xbox and 360 but find them for cheap in Gamestop and on Goozex, I'd rather have the real deal.

Meh. I'll be interested if strangers wrath or panzer dragoon orta are released. Until then, no thanks to being ripped off.

That said, farenheit/indigo prophecy is definately worth playing for classic adventure fans.

@GuitarAtomik - Winter doesn't officially start until Dec 22nd.

Okay, so I bought Fable 3 times, once used, once new (the used copy didn't work well) and once when they came out with Fable: Lost Chapters.

I might get it again if there are achievements like "Kick a Chicken 500ft" and "Fart 300 times in the game" or "Marry a Man"

Seems a bit pricey, though could be cool if they bring out enough decent games. I'd get JSRF if it was on there, or psychonauts.

Though they need to fix it so I can play backwards compatible games on my monitor. Only 1 works :(

I hope the UK video marketplace has some free content, kind of like how 4 on demand works. So if you miss something, it'll be on there for free for a week, then after that buy it. Otherwise I'll stick to UKNova.

The time limit on marketplace movies is 24 hours not days, see if they let you keep it for a month....that would actually make some sense right?

If they do this and actually update the games (I doubt it since they're about what..15ish 12ish dollars, that'd be great. Halo Combat Evolved on Live? Awesome. Original Halo Achievements? Awesome.

If I could find Psychonauts in a store AND had my Xbox hooked up to a TV, then I would buy it retail. As neither of those two things will seemingly occur by the 4th, I will definitely buy me some MS points to grab a copy of Psychonauts. I hear such good things.

Sorry MS, but Nintendo beat you to the punch here a looong time ago. Wouldn't BC be a much better option here, and have it applied in patches? A little too pricey for my tastes too.
Well, it would be cool if they released some cool, rare Japanese X-Box games over it... Oh wait.

I've been wanting to play Psychonauts forever, its impossible to find. Also you know what, for all the people like me that didn't have the original xbox its nice to have the option to get these games and also my achievement habit always needs its fix, oh god they best have achievements. Besides, I don't understand the people bitching about this, its not like anyone is going to force you to buy them. I'd rather have the choice to buy, then no choice and so should you (pointing finger directly at you!!!)
