Is the PS3 recession-proof? Sony not sure, but bullish as Hell photo

With the recession biting deep, it looks like Christmas might be bleak for quite a few people. Fortunately for Sony, the PlayStation 3 is apparently doing quite well for itself, leading Sony to declare its own bullishness for the holiday season.

When asked by MTV if he felt the PS3 was "recession-proof," Sony's hardware marketer John Koller had this to say:

"Good question, given the reality of how things are from a macro perspective. First off, I want to say that we’re very bullish on sales for this holiday season and beyond. In fact, we’re very excited about the numbers we’ve been seeing coming in. There’s a lot of talk about whether gaming is recession proof. I’m not sure I can answer that. I can say the PS3 is selling extremely well. Maybe those rumors about people forgoing vacations for gaming might be coming true a little bit here."

Has the dire financial climate changed your gaming at all? Does your budget still allow for the same buying habits, or are you resisting a few more titles this Christmas?

I've always been resistant when it comes to games, buying only those that I really like. So no buying habits changed here.

I've not cut back when it comes to games or media so far. If I felt like my job was not going to be there tomorrow though, I'd cut off media first. It's expensive and I've got enough of it that I don't really need new ones.

I was going to buy Fallout 3, Dead space, Fable II, Resistance 2, COD WaW, super mario galaxy and Left 4 Dead. Instead I just settled for LBP and Gears 2. I might buy them when they get reduced and I have more money.

Mind you I did buy a PS3 and Wii as well as my xbox 360 recently. Just sticking to the games that have longer life and high ratings.

Just for the Record 360 is my favourite console.

Unless an exclusive title brings the demand-or the person will use it as a bluray player I see teh 100-200 cheaper 360 ruling the roost

I only buy the games I know I am going to like and replay. So nothing has changed for me.

I do love the pic, that is pretty funny

I've actually bought more this year than last. Not that we had more money, just that I was willing to do without other less important things like food, shoes, a new couch, nice clothes etc. In fact, with my purchase of Resistance 2, I have officially bought more PS3 games than I have for the Wii, which is something I never thought would happen - but back then I though the Wii would continue to actually have games to buy. And as far as PC, I pretty much only buy stuff that Valve puts out at this point. Unfortunately the misses is a WoW fan, so we have that to deal with as well.

I'm with Necrozen and Brainderailment.

I've bought a lot of games this Fall. Way more than last. Games are worthwhile entertainment investments. It isn't my exclusive method of entertainment, but it is my favorite.

I've cut waaaaaay back on games. But then I just placed an order for Tatsunoko vs Capcom import and a TvC Wii stick. My wallet cries ;_;

My problem is time, not money. No time to get all deep with all of these games. Just Left 4 Dead and TvC for me this year.

I've bought more this year compared to last year. There are a few titles like Guitar Hero and Tomb Raider that I've passed on because I've bought so many other titles.

I honestly have not purchased a new game in around 6 months or something. It's not because of the recession or what-not. It's just because i'm cheap.

Nintendo are doing absolutely fine from the recession. No-one can afford to go out as a family anymore so they are all buying Wiis and staying in together. Simple.

I still buy all the games I want. The only thing limiting me from playing them is time.

Fits my budget fine as I already own one.

The whole huge reasons recessions start is because people start jamming their money in their mattresses, so spend spend spend!

I think these past 2 months have been a time where I have bought the most games in my life. I think I have picked up almost 6 games in those 2 months....

Because games are becoming the primary entertainment choice of many, many people (I play games far more than I watch films), I think that consoles will continue to do relatively well in this economic climate - sure a few sales will be lost, and less games will be bought, but because gaming is, for many people, one of the only sources of entertainment in their otherwise, bleak and dreary life (mine included), they will still buy games. I will still buy games.

For people to stop buying games, things would have to get REALLY bad - as in, Great-Depression style or worse.

I recently bought a PS3 and two games, so I guess my gaming expenses will probably amongst the last thing I'll cut from my budget straight before grub, electricity and the internets.
