Is the 360's HDMI update causing red rings, days after expired warranty? photo

The Xbox.com forums are, very much like a red ring of death, alight with outrage after multiple reports of a brand new E 74 Error Message, allegedly caused by the recent HDMI update. The real kicker? This apparent outbreak has occurred just days after Microsoft announced it was ending the extended warranty for red-ringed consoles.

This new error is unique in the fact that it is not a traditional "red ring" problem. The classic "RROD" has three of the system's four lights illuminated in red to indicate a problem. The new issue only has one of the lights flashing in the dreaded color.

I've seen at least one part of this new problem myself. Our Xbox has also very recently had an issue where one quadrant of the lights was flashing red, and it was accompanied by strange Japanese text on the screen. However, this was just prior to the update, and our 360 has functioned normally since. Those who have subsequently reported the error have not been so lucky.

If it's not one thing with Microsoft's console, it's another. I don't think I've seen a system with such a wide variety of exciting pitfalls and thrilling post-purchase stresses. Unfortunately, this new issue will carry a price tag of $100 to fix for most customers now. Which of course, is very handy

Looks like wacky Microsoft has done it again!

That's been happening to me! I think I lost my reciept so I'll be doing the towel trick for a while. Games coming out this month are MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to a geek.

Man, every single game company is just screwing up left and right. Why can't there be an NES, SNES, PSX, PS2 of this generation?

Microsoft must really enjoy class action law suits, cause this sounds like they're gearing up for another one.

Aha, you must have been late to the party, friend. Every generation of consoles had their own set of problems. Sound chips on the Famicom, dusty contacts on the SNES, the clicking sounds on PS1s, DREs on the PS2, the entire design of the GD-ROM, all that fun stuff.

What did you expect from a company who does the same thing since over 20 years with PC's?
I feel sorry for the Xbox 2 Owners out there... hope it isn't really the patch but just the bad hardware. Proving that it was due to the patch might be difficult...

Isn't that what happens when the cables aren't plugged into the back of the 360?
One time, I tried turning on my 360 and it was flashing one red quandrant and I thought to myself "oh shi--oh the cable isn't plugged in".

Mighty: That has happened to me, back when I lived in a place where there was a dodgy connection. It's very true. However, this issue seems to be accompanied by bricking, and I know our 360 hadn't been touched when I got the issue. Is very strange.

i also got the update and i was playing the hell out the simpsons game(360) when it came in the mail today(after install).

I do take breaks/turning it off to give the system a breather. I take the utmost care with my belongings.

I'm not trying to say that those systems were perfect. I'm trying to say they were pretty much the aces of their respective generations and managed to get almost everything together. Compare with now, where not a single system really approaches any old standard of quality except in the realm of graphics.

i just bought an 360 Arcade to replace my long dieing launch 360 console and i've had no probs yet with the hdmi port but i am expecting my new 360 breakdown somehow in the next month or so,it will probably be the old hard drive that i transplanted over to burst into flames or something

@retroNutZ: Some Live Arcade games are in 1080, so HDMI does make a difference.

the E74 error is not new at all. it happens a lot with the old xbox's you can usually fix it with the x-clamp method.. as for an update causing it? I have no clue.

what causes RROD is a little thing called heat, your xbox heats up so much inside that the soldering on the 360 processor under the heat sink comes off the board. thats why X Clmping works you force the heat sink down on the processor so it cant lift and disconnect. updates cant do it because its a hardware failure.

what causes RROD is shitty manufacturing, cutting costs and corners, and not testing hardware enough to know there may be a giant problem. but hey, they can't make their money of a working systems alone, right?

@Qraze i think MS has known about the RROD from the release of the 360 but you know what they would make more money by just saying it doesnt happen!

The only system I've had go completely tits up on me was my Gamecube. I don't own a 360.

And I don't think I will. Of course, this has as much to do with the fact that I don't have a display that could do the system justice as me being scared of a breakdown.

I'm also a Nintendo whore and typically don't bother with other systems until much later. I didn't have a PS2 until last year.

I agree that this is BS, but honestly.. What do you expect from a company that cuts corners when testing a new product? You pay for repairs, you may with time, you pay with your sanity! I can remember a time when companies were REQUIRED to pay for repairs if they made a mistake in manufacturing... Apparently those days are long gone?
You know.. like when your car has a factory defect, they still fix it for free no matter the age of the car...
Shouldn't this fall under the same category? You know, they're at fault, therefore they fix it? This may be another lawsuit waiting to happen... Time will tell.

I just bought an elite last night, my original xbox (which is 2.5 years old) started freezing and dieing after an hour or so on wednesday... It's wierd that after over 2 years of perfect running it all of a sudden starts breaking down now.

To everyone worrying about the warrenty: it's my understanding that only the LAUNCH consoles are out of the warrenty now. If you've just bought a 360, and it was made within the last year (check on the back), then don't worry, you're still covered for another 2 years.

Well, I think, anyway.

I thought one red light was a hard drive error. Whenever updates come out you get loads of people claiming it ruined their Xbox when it didn't If the update did it then all Xboxes would be effected by it. Chances are their Xboxes were just getting to the end of their life cycle.

Pure coincidence, the update won't have had anything to do with the bricking.

Also, the warranty actually ran out a little while ago, but they kept honouring it past the original 3 years. Its still not acceptable how many break but, y'know, M$ aren't always evil.

And people are still going to argue that the 360 is the best system ever. Okay I know systems in the past have had issues as well. But there has NEVER been a system with so many problems. My 360 also was getting the E74 error, however the NXE update fixed it *knocks on wood*.

Basically, the 360's fail rate has led me to institute a new rule when I buy games.

1- Big time multiplayer titles I will buy for the 360 (since my friends all have 360s)
2- Games primarily fueled by single player campaigns I will buy for PS3
3- Wii... Laugh at it regardless while it gathers dust on my shelf.

That's exactly what I do now! Although if more of my friends are getting PS3s (and they are due to the RROD), #1 will end up just being PS3 as well.

They have been red ringing since day one, any paralells with updates are coincedental. The stream of repairs for MS follows the same numbers month after month - we just talk about it more if we have BS theories when it occurs at the same time as something else on the system.

My buddies Xbox died and I am assuming from this!

He came into my work yesterday to tell me he spiked his Xbox!

"Spiked" I asked?

"Yeah" he said, "I threw it across the room and stabbed it"

...Awesome.

I've been getting these E74 errors as well but my console is over 2 years old...now I even get artifacts or a snow like effect. (Yes I did try a different cable and that didn't work) Is there a way to get it fixed without paying that ridiculous 100 dollars? I heard if you make enough fuss on the phone you might get the fee waved. And what about this clamp for the proc?
