Is streaming-only pricing on Netflix's horizon? photo

Assuming Netflix's library of streamable movies beefs up quite a bit, would you be interested in paying a lower monthly fee for streaming-only access? Don't get too excited, as there aren't any concrete plans yet, but it's looking like a definite possibility.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings proposed the idea while speaking with Bloomberg, pointing towards late this year to 2010 as a plausible time frame.

What does this mean for you? Seeing as how more than "one million Xbox 360 users have downloaded Netflix software," and Hastings believes "a reasonable discount for [streaming-only access] is not inappropriate at all," it could potentially mean a great deal for those using a 360 to stream video content.

Again, this new pricing model wouldn't be happening any time soon, if it does happen at all, but it's interesting to think about. Would you drop getting DVDs from Netflix if it meant a cheaper monthly rate for streaming movie acess only?

Streaming never worked for me so I don't even bother with this.

I know I would. Just for the documentaries alone. I had no idea a doc about the Helvetica font would be so... compelling.

I would love it. I just got Netflix and all I do is stream it on my 360. I have yet to get a physical DVD although I might soon given that the streaming selection is limited.

Absolutely! Well, that is if I didn't have my parents' account to hijack. God bless their non-understanding of the internets.

Whenever someone mentions the docs on Netflix, they always bring up Helvetica. I still need to see that.

@casualweaponry: Yeah, we watched some of Helvetica in a graphic design class last year, and I was surprised how interesting I found it to be.

on topic: I still haven't used my 360's streaming abilities, but that is mostly that my university throttles our internet connection once you download 2 gigs in a day. Also, I don't have a Netflix account yet. That said, if they provided cheaper, streaming only, pricing I would probably join once I am off campus.

Does the netflix streaming on xbox cost extra?

I already have netflix and a 360, so if its free why haven't I been abusing it yet??

Holy shit a good idea out of corporate o_0

blows my mind :o

@ Bullettrain - As long as you already get streaming there is no additional cost to use it on ur 360, just get the free software.

They would have to make some changes before I'd drop physical discs for streaming only. Obviously they need to beef up the selection of movies available for streaming, the selection is pretty limited right now, not in terms of quantity but quality. It seems most of the streamable movies are second- or third-tier (or lower) flicks. They also need to find a way to get me more than stereo sound. I've got a 5.1 system and I'd like to use it. Until those two issues are addressed, I'll keep getting a physical disk for the movies I really care about.

I get unlimited Blu Ray rentals (1 at a time) and all the streaming I want for like $10 a month..it's already a great deal. God I love NetFlix!

I would definitely be interested in this. I was actually checking out the Netflix website yesterday for this exact thing, but obviously had no luck.

Just how limited are we talking with the streaming library? Like "I burned through all the good shit in a week" limited? If so, nevermind.

I'll actually be interested in Netflix on 360 when you can browse available titles and add to your queue via Live. Also when they HD and surround sound options. Oh by the way of the over 100 titles in my queue, only 4 were available via streaming. Weak. For now, its probably one of the most overrated aspects of Live. Its free (since i was already a Live and Netflix subscriber) so I'm not complaining, but its just not quite there.... yet.

I would not want to give up my physical DVD. You can only get some of the newer releases on DVD and i usually get a couple new DVD's a week.

i would do this if their streaming titles selection was as good as the disc based selection

If my girlfriend didn't have a netflix account that I could exploit for streaming, I would pay no more that $5 a month for a service like this.

Its a tough call, I find that I use the streaming all the time in a random, "hey guys wanna find a (probably crappy) movie to watch", kinda way so I've found I really don't use the disc through the mail method as much. Beef up the slection to most of their stock and throw in a discount an I'll probly bite

If it was low enough it might worth it to cut the hassle of finding other "means" to watch movies.

No way...Unless the streaming selections completely mirrors the disc selection it would have to be $1-$2/month for me to even consider it.

I'll tell you this: I don't use Netflix, but I would join if they started this up. I stare at the Xbox app and weep. A friend of mine swears by it, but I have no interest in physical disks.

hey ya'll. first time poster. just saying hello. you guys at d-toid rock btw.
i'm all about the streaming with the netflix. if you haven't used the actual dvds yet, do so cus they have EVERYTHING. i guarantee they'll have something for you to watch. first of all, i'm sure if you already got an account, they probably won't charge you to stream cus you already get that feature.

if they were to put their entire dvd selection FOR streaming? yeah, then i'd drop my current 3 at a time deal and just go streaming.

anyway, good to meet you all. stripey, say hi to me =P
