Is Sony's customer service being affected by phasing out the 60GB PS3? photo

It's not clear at the moment if this is one of those isolated cases of a momentary lapse of stock on Sony's part, or if this is the beginnings of a greater pattern to come, but at least one person -- a European NeoGAF poster -- is claiming to be caught in console limbo while he waits for Sony to replace his failed 60GB PS3 which was sent in for repairs.

The story has it that after a month of hearing nothing from Sony regarding the repairs, he became concerned and contacted them for an update. The response on the other end might surprise you:

"Sorry we don't have any stock of the 60GB left and we don't know when a shipment will arrive to replace your unit. Call back in two to four weeks for an update"

Surprised by that answer? So are we. Hit up the jump, and get our take on things.

We have no official confirmation from Sony at this point to either validate or discredit this claim, but it sounds feasible. Now we all know that while the PS3 may have a lower failure rate than the nearest comparable competitor, the Xbox 360, not having enough stock on hand to take care of your current customers is a big no-no.

Is this an inevitability now that the 60GB PS3 has been phased out? Just personal opinion here, but if this story is true, I'm wondering why Sony didn't go the customer service route, and at least try and scrape together a replacement for him from somewhere. We realize that times are tight (even for Sony), but doesn't anyone believe in having inventory anymore?

can't they just repair it? A little duct tape and a magic marker should do the trick!

That's just crazy if true. It was bad enough having to wait 2.5 weeks for my 360 to get sent in and fixed for free, I don't know what I'd do if they told me to wait 2-4 weeks just to possibly hear from them...

If this is true this is a travesty on Sony's part. The last thing they need to do is start handing out horrible customer service.

Also, what on earth happened that they couldn't fix the original owners PS3 instead of looking to replace it??

Unless they didn't have a motherboard with the emotion chip built into it, I'm not sure.

Seriously, why cant they release software emu via an update, more people would get the 40GB. Not me though. I need wifi for remote play. I guess I get boned until June when the MGS4 bundle is available.

Is this really a surprise to anyone? Sony discontinued the 60 GB model last summer; their worldwide warehouses had to run out of the units eventually. Still, letting a month go by without contacting a customer is terrible service, so the least they can do is give him an 80 GB unit. I hope he wasn’t too attached to playing his PS1 and PS2 games on his PS3...

So...the dude spends $599 on a console, and it breaks. He sends it to Sony, but they can't replace it. They can't even give him a newer model, because it's missing the functionality of the original purchase.

Sony dropped the fucking ball big time.

If they built it, they should be able to repair it right? That's lame as shit. Not everyone who needs a repair needs a brand new console. So what gives?

I'm not so sure he can get an 80GB unit for PAL territories. On the other hand, the 60GB PAL PS3s use software for BC, not hardware. So the Emotion Engine shouldn't be a factor.

In every feature but region and HDD size, the PAL 60GB is equivalent to the NTSC 80GB.

@Pariah:
Software emu is easier said than done. I don't think they're willing to put that much R&D into a PS2 emulator for the PS3 because everyone who has PS2 games has a PS2. Plus, it has taken the PS2 emu community years to get it to work on flagship PC hardware. Even though they have the PS2's specs and engineers who made the PS2 working on it, it will still take too much time and money for a feature that won't net them any money. Not to mention that they're barely pulling a profit on each system. I don't see what the fuss about BC is.

The fuss about BC is because some people like me had their PS2 fail on them and don't own one currently. It would allow us to play our old games again.

I wonder if Sony gives an option where you can receive an 80gb model instead. I know it's all about the principle of the whole thing but still for other people out there it would be a nice option.

Sounds about right to me, I had my 80 gb PS3 fail on me a while ago and by Sony's estimation it will be on backorder for at least another 10 business days. The 80 gb PS3 is in low supply in stores as it is, I just hope that doesn't mean I'll be waiting until the MGS4 pack-in is released in June. Wouldn't care so much if they hadn't sent me a broken console when I first exchanged mine. All told I've been out a system for over two months. I've never been a Sony fanboy but they seem to be trying very hard to turn me into a hater.

This is one of the reasons I don't like Sony. They should just replace it with the current SKU. Even a refurb like MS or Apple does.

They just need to bring back the fully backwards compatible PS3. I probably never would have gotten one if it couldn't reliably play my PS2 library (and the 80GB can't) so I'm going to be totally pissed if my 60 goes out and they can't get me a proper replacement.

How does a PS3 even break? Mine never even gets warm and is as quiet as a mouse.

Sucks to be him, and if it's Sony's fault that it's broken, then shame on them.

If I sent in my 60gb for repair and got an 80gb or a 40gb back, I'd be super pissed... I still play a lot of PS2 games on my PS3, and I sold my PS2 for some extra cash after buying my PS3 because my PS3 has full PS2 compatibility.

Unfortunately, I don't think Sony's customer service has as much experience as Microsoft when it comes to replacing dead consoles.

yep Samit, I cooked an egg the other day. But I think this is a strong issue, and something for Sony and Microsoft to consider in the future.

Make one fucking Console, and STICK TO IT! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!.

This is the main fucking problem with making multiple SKU's and keep shitting on the people who bought first gen models. I do hope Sony finds a way to fix the 60gig model and if need to replace them, to replace them with the same model. I would hate to get a 80G when I payed for 60g version. I still play Chrono Trigger and old school PS1 games on my PS3.

Now just for this, I wont fold@home much till I hear sony has a good way of fixing this issue.

@Toneman: Trust me. If there’s one thing that I know (besides sports and sports games), it’s the PlayStation 3 hardware. The 40 GB PS3 has no PS2 backwards compatibility, but it should play almost all PS1 games just fine. Check out the original US announcement here; you’ll notice that Jim’s write-up says that the 40 GB model will have no PS2 backwards compatibility. But every single PS3 SKU that has been released so far will play all PS3 games and almost all PS1 games.

Man, that sucks hardcore. You'd figure they would have been able to fix it in the time it's taking them to find a replacement.

@Crunshii - I think Microsoft has finally come to realize the point of sticking with one console. The systems in the Arcade, Pro, and Elite are all the same, except what they're packaged with. Sony on the other hand, changes their mind more often than a six year old picking an ice cream flavor. Nothing they're doing in terms of system production, makes any sense to me.

PS: Customer service for both Sony and Microsoft, blow serious ass.

Samit, it's strange that your PS3 is so hot. I remember DMV's being fairly cool. For that matter, my (Falcon) 360 is also quite cool, and is only moderately warm around the air ducts. It's my Wii that's the hottest, even when it's in standby mode.

This is terrible for that guy. If it were me I'd be approaching one of those consumer tv shows, to complain about Sony, and force them to get their skates on this issue.

Truth is that Sony are fuckin greedy. The worry about shit like Home, which is flash and nice but not neccessary, and remove BC that they promised and us gamers wanted and needed badly (really because their true agenda, is to make us download and pay for our PS1/PS2 catalogue again). Fuck that.

Until the day they fucked up the skus and removed BC completely, I was up for buying a PS3. Now, I honestly couldn't care less, regardless of what good games are on it. I don't mind missing MGS4 etc because of it. Its a matter of principle and them not screwing us over unfairly. I'll stick with my PSP and PS2.

I'll stick with my 360 and MS, they know how to treat customers better. Sony can trump up whatever crap they like, but there's no excuse for removing BC and I'll never forgive them for that.

This is what sucks about having way different models. I have a 60 GB version and like the fact it has hardware emulation. But if my system breaks there are no newly produced systems to replace it. The 80 GB version might suit most peoples need for BC but it is still technically not as good leading them to not being able to swap them out without potentially pissing off folks.

They really should just offer the 80 as an immediate solution or wait for repairs if they are not going to make any more hardware BC versions. But they are really going to have to bite that bullet sometime cause they are going to eventually have to piss people off that need a new one after the warranty is up(I'm sure they are shooting for doing this later as its best to piss people off after they are invested in the library and dont want to give it up).

They still have a 60 gig Ps3 in my town, at Loblaws. It's there with there shitty TVs and DVD players in a little alcove store like the liquor shop one; just as you're leaving. They still want $599 for it though.. If SONY sent me the money I could pick it up and send it to buddy, but I bet they'd rather let him rot with no console. I waited OVER A YEAR for SONY to replace a Hi8 video camcorder I used to own in the late 90s. They're consumer electronics service is even lousier than their console service, believe me.

If Sony were not so greedy and had any respect for us, they'd stop freaking about and give us the BC they said they originally would. Its their u turn that now has this chap in a fix. If BC was in all PS3s, there'd be no problem, and this chap could easily get a replacement.

If it were me, I'd even go as far as taking this to other gaming press out there (drag them through the mud if you, have to, as the japanese hate embarassment), and ask why Sony removed BC from PS3 and didn't forecast for these kinds of problems, now arising because of what they removed the BC. (yes, I know BC isn't his PS3s fault by the way).

Well, considering that Sony is pushing a system that is supposed to be marketed to those with HiDef setups, I would expect them to replace a unit that can upconvert my PS2 games so they don't look like ass on my HDTV with a unit that can do the same. This is all leading to Sony selling PS2 games on PSN along with PS1 games. Give it a year or two and I'm guessing they'll be selling them like MS sells XBox 1 games.
Cowboy TTop's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/07/2008 06:52

I don't think anyone has a problem with the selling PS2 games on PSN, thing is that they should be allowing us both options like 360 (to play via BC and/or DLC.

The longer this chap has no PS3 with BC, the worse it will get for Sony.
