Is Resident Evil 5 shorter than Salazar? photo

According to UK gaming magazine Xbox World 360, it should take the average gamer less than eight hours to complete Resident Evil 5, a game they reviewed for its latest issue.

Clarifying the info to the angry masses on its blog, they repeat that their first single play-through was seven hours, thirty-six minutes ... and one second. There's even screens to prove it! It also says that the game contains roughly 80 minutes worth of cut-scenes, and that the times shown weren't achieved by rushing through the game.

It's also mentioned that "you cannot see all there is to see in Resident Evil 5 in under ten hours," citing all sorts of extras and unlocks that could keep you playing. But for those who aren't completionists -- simply interested in a one-off experience -- this may sound a bit disappointing. When I complete a three chapter preview build of the game in around five hours, so this doesn't seem like such an outrageous claim.

I suppose we'll see when the game hits shelves this March, on Friday the 13th. Is this information on the game's length troubling? A deal-breaker?

I'm pretty sure the only people who are bitching about the length of the game probably never played a RE game in their life.

The deal-breakers was playing the craptastically lame demo and experiencing the slow, clunky game play and being annoyed to no end by the brain dead partner.

If the game is very good for those 7 hours, I will not be angry.

It's not too bad. While I haven't played a Resident Evil game since abortive runs of RE2 and RE3, with a struggle to cope with the controls of RE4 Wii, 7 hours is plenty of time, especially if you intend to play it cooperatively.

I agree with Nukka, If this game is amazing and really wants you to come back for more than 7 hours isn't so bad. Hell I played both levels of the demo like 5 times each, its so much fun.

Sounds great. I love shorter games. I can actually beat them over a weekend. I am now actually MORE excited for RE5.

I wish I could remember how long it took for me to finish #4, but I really wasn't keeping track of the time. I got a lot out of the game on top of normal gameplay (subsequent replays, extras, etc.), so if they give me a crap ton to do after beating it once, I'll be happy.

That said, I wasn't thrilled by the demo. They really do need to overhaul the controls. And I'm a huge fan of the series...just that, after playing all sorts of games in between RE4 and the demo, you are reminded how archaic they really are.

But, all that's been said before, and has started countless flame wars, so I'll leave it at that.

I'm going to hold off on picking this one up. I will eventually get it, but for now, it's on the waiting list.

Looks like this one is definitely going on my rental list. I simply can't justify spending $60 on a game (with no versus multiplayer) that lasts anything less than 15-20 hours. Should be a fun rental though.

....why are people bitching?

Either the people bitching haven't played RE1-3 or really didn't know that the originals could really be beaten in about 30 mins to an hour. That's without a speed run. seriously.

7 hours is really pretty lengthy if you look at the original RE games where they felt long..but were really pretty short if you know what to do.

@ Shin Oni,

True, but RE4 was MUCH MUCH longer than 1-3. If this rumor is true, it's pretty disheartening, but certianly not a deal breaker. I do hope that RE5 is at least as long as RE4, though.

On one hand, 7 hours for a game is inexcusable. Games cost $70 bucks a pop here and for that I'd at least want for 15-20 hour game...

Then again, IF the extras significantly affect the replay value (ie alternate missions ala Hunk and Tofu) and the achievements are fun enough to do, it might be worth a purchase.

Also, did Capcom say anything on whether or not they would support the game via DLC?

RE5's still on my To Buy list...but it's hanging there by a freaking slim thread.

In a world where Call of Duty 4 and Portal are revered as some of the best games ever made, I think we can approach a game with an average length campaign with this one mindset:
If those 8 hours of content are compelling, than it's a-okay.
And I guess the team is assuming that the co-operative online stuff would give the game more longevity.
Speaking as a stupid fan of Resident Evil 4, I'm actually looking forward to a shorter single player. Resident Evil 4 is one of the few games I've played that's TOO DAMN LONG. It's crazy that the first play through of that game could be 20 hours long. That's too long! If that shorter campaign is chock full of awesome content, and less obvious padding, why, that would be just peachy!

Well, I personally thought that Resident Evil 4 was a bit too long. But going from that, too less than 8 hours? Well, as long as the those hours are good. I guess it would also make it easier CO-OP wise.

Yeah that would be pretty lame as RE4 was a rare game with both high production values AND a fairly lengthy main game to go with it. RE 4 and Metroid Prime are the only games I can think of that had such consistently high quality for their 15 some hour playtimes... that's pretty much unheard of with the level of graphics you're expected to put out now it seems.

Well thats a DealBreaker, I know all the people making exceptions and excuses why its ok for the game to be short are fans so they wont complain even if the game is a failure (which it isnt). Anyway $60 for a 7 hour game that I wont play again is no deal, end of story.

and then we're not adding in the factor of how hard a boss could possibly be. Half the reason RE4 was kinda length cause bosses would tear you apart if you had no idead what to do...or some random slipup happened. I figure now that it's co-op, there's more at risk just cause it's not reliant on you. so there may be many times where you'll be fine, but you cant reach your partner in time or some junk like that. Stop looking at it as if the game will be some easy cakewalk.

@SantaClaus
But again, RE4/RE5 aren't like RE1-3. This is action/adventure genre now rather than survival horror. truthfully, RE4 was only really long the first playthrough. Afterwards the game is pretty short. be it cause of all the extras and completely strong guns available to buy. Plus Mercenary mode was there. I'm sure Capcom knows just what they're doing.

Resident Evil 4 was on of the only games I played through multiple times. I definitely don't mind this. Hopefully there will be some sort of Asignment Ada and Mercenaries modes. Still, I have yet to see the replacement for the merchant and that's my major concern. I don't know if I can live without hearing those sweet words...What are ya buoyin'?

The co-op mode makes for a lot of re-runs and playing games with more gameplay could actually make the co-op worse since you have to look for someone to play with when your main partner is away. And after playing the demos with others, I'm pretty sure I'll keep to playing with people I know when the full game is released.

I'd hope it'd be short. Resident Evil 4 is fantastic, but the game is just too long. Too bad they screwed up the controls by attempting to pander to the idiots who think it needs strafing and right-stick aiming. The "tank" controls were clearly the best scheme for the old, fixed-camera games and RE4 proved that they're the best for the move to 3D as well. I blame all the idiots playing Halo on Xbox.

I believe Capcom said that RE4 was too long, and they wanted to cut down the playtime of 5, which is a shame, because RE4 has one of the best progression transitions I've ever played. From the Village to the never-ending Castle, then to the finale at the Island(which was larger than it looked), RE4 had you on the edge of your seat with explosive action and endangered horror. I expect RE5 to pull that off on a much larger scale.

If its really well design five to seven hours of gameplay, then I dont see why I should complain. If some of it was "filler" content, then I might be dissapointd. Overall, unlocking all the stuff will take more campaign walkthroughs + there will probably be a mini-game tied in to add extra time to play the game. I just see when I pick up the game.

I completely mastered RE4 and I'm going to do it again with RE5. This news doesn't upset me at all. I beat RE4 3 times in one day (once on professional) a couple summers back. I want to beat RE5 like 10 times on all difficulty levels and unlock EVERYTHING possible. That's how I play my games.

"Portal was thrown in with four other full games for a budget price."

Plus Portal wasn't really that much about the story. The center of the game were the puzzles. But in Resident Evil games it has always been about the story. If we can believe the Blogpost there are 80 min of cutscenes in there in comparison to Portal's 0.

This really dissappoints me. Especially as I rember very well that Capcom originally announced that the game would be about 50% longer than RE4. The fact that I now will also have to deal with a stupid coop system just puts me off further. Which is really a shame because RE4 was and still is my favourite game of all time.
The coop with that stupid chick will just throw out any sense of tension and anxiety, because as soon as there is someone to help be it NPC or real buddy, the feeling of being alone and having all odds stacked against you (aka Resident Evil atmosphere) just goes right out the window.

We'll see what the Dtoid staff thinks of the game. I hope Jim is doing a review because I know that his thoughts about RE4 are the same as mine. I will definately not buy it until the Dtoid review and even then I'll probably only get it when the dollar/time ration seriously improves over 10/1.

All the Resident Evil games are short --- The last playthrough of 4 lasted me about 3.5 hours. It just depends on whether or not you know the game well enough.

I was already leaning in the direction of waiting on RE5 after the clunky controls and serious lack of RE-style scares, so this more or less cements it for me. I'll wait till I can get this game for around $40.

I'm still getting day one, because I loved RE 4, even if it did take me over 20 hours my first play through. RE 5 made a few slight adjustments to the fun control scheme and took a gamble by adding co-op, and so far co-op kicks ass in the demo, so I'm greatly looking forward to it.

Its obvious that most people here have not played any of the original REs (1-3), which could generally be beat first play through in under 4-5 hours.

I Also believe that the controls need to be somewhat slow and restrictive because it adds to the suspense. When Doom3 came out and in order to equip the flashlight you had to put away your guns I was at first annoyed. Later I realized it added to the gameplay. It left you vulnerable because in order to see anything at all you had to have that flashlight out, and then have a freak-out trying to equip your gun when you spot an enemy.

As long as it's an AWESOME 7-8 hours I'm in!

Cod4 took me like 4 hours....that was weak sauce.

I can beat ANY game in just over a second in an armwrestle competition, too short? I think not.

Play RE4 and RE5 side by side, you'll notice how Leon's movements are a lot more fluid compared to Chris's moves, even with the aiming speed maxed, Chris still aims slower, this is one design choice that's just beyond retarded.

I'm still picking it up but I already lined up a trade in case I end up hating it.

Sure RE4 excelled at both quantity and quality, but if this game isn't as good as RE4 is it really such a big deal?

Besides as other have mentioned, since RE5 focuses on co-op gameplay, a shorter length would probably be more favourable.
