Is Chun Li a post-op transsexual? photo

1UP pointed this out a few days ago, but I think it needs reiterating on Destructoid -- Chun Li's hands are nightmarishly huge in Street Fighter IV. Did she just inject collagen directly between her fingers? Did she eat something she was allergic to? Is she pulling a Poison? I have to go with the latter.

There's nothing wrong with transsexuals (they're hot and you know it) but some people really should not make the jump from male to female. Like, for example, if they have hands the size of giant squids! It's not just the hands either, but everything about Chun Li that crosses the line into pure male territory. Her arms are now bulked up considerably, resembling big, steroid-infested Chris Benoit limbs. Any sense of a waist also appears to have disappeared.

Just check out this screenshot and tell me that's not in the least bit disturbing. Seeing such a mannish, hulking brute in a dress trying to act girly as if nobody has noticed the python arms and monstrous ham fists is creepy, to say the least. All I'll say is, I dread to think of the view that Ryu gets the next time she does one of her signature moves ...

Can anyone say Meatspinning Bird Kick?

What makes you think that they will actually change her in the final version? Every other character looks like that.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Why do I say this? Because its a capcom game. Go and look at Capcom's other games and their previous character designs.

Get with the program. SF4 is not hyper realism of Tekken or VF, the designs though in 3D are still stylised along that traditional manga route, where anatomy is exaggerated on certain characters in certain places.

Over the years, SF series has had different artists take up the main character design duties, hence the change in looks across the series. Daigo Ikeno is on art direction for SF4, so the characters have his look. And to be honest, I think his work translates well into 3D, judging by the game footage I've seen, they've done well to retain that manga style look, without getting too realistic like Tekken. Check out over at 1up.com for an interview with him at the link below.

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3165156

Lastly, if you check the art or screens of the superb SF 3rd Strike, you might also notice some similarities to SF4, that's because Ikeno worked on both these games. Understand, love or hate it, its up to you, but do read the interview.

I still say give Capcom a break, as anything they are doing, is still streets ahead of Midway's horrid work with MK.

You guys know how I feel about this game's art direction. Even with SF's Alpha art direction which had wild proportions she had small hands. I don't know what the hell they are thinking.

Then again, it could be worse:

TTop: I actually like the art style in general, and I defended the original images. My original post is more just fucking around than anything else, but she is the one character so far who I do think looks bad, and it's not because of the Manga look they're retaining, it's simply that she looks like a fucking pro-wrestler -- a male one. That image of her doing the Yatta stuff looks ripped from Cho Aniki.

But like I said, I was mostly fucking around. Maybe they'll fix the hands. I hope so.

It's a video game, a stylised artform based on the stylised exaggerated visuals pioneered by American cartoons in the depression era. Anyone working in any visual medium should know these basics, the human form needs to be exaggerated in the right places to highlight and emphasize movement - features such as the head, hands, feet, and eyes are made bigger or bolder - in videogames and any stylised animation, if you were to keep the human form within realistic proportions it would actually look wrong.

Capcom have obviously gone for a chunky style based on their earlier SF illustrations where the emphasis is on dynamic body parts used as weapons, even the facial expressions in this game are chunky and over the top. If 1up are looking for visual subtlety from a SF game then they are bigger morons than I previously thought.

I can see why everyone is bothered by this, but at the same time I must respectfully request they go play Street Fighter Alpha 3 again and look at the victory screens. You'll notice the portraits show the characters having hugely disproportionate body parts in their hands and feet sometimes. This is for two reason:

1) The larger parts are larger to indicate that they're being thrust out at stationary POV. The most recognizable example I can think of this would be in the Matrix when Trinity gets right next to an Agent on the roof of a building and shoots him in the head. When she says, "Dodge this," the gun is right in front of the camera while her arm trails back to her much smaller body. It's a perspective trick and it's not that hard to see this in the Chun-li picture.

2) The hand is larger to emphasize it's ability to crush the life from you. It's a stylistic emphasis that apparently isn't being interpreted very well because I keep seeing comments like, "WTF?!?! Her hand is bigger than her head!"

By the way, do you really think someone who kicks the crap out of people like Zangief or Sagat and destroys cars with her bare hands is going to have no muscle tone and cute, little manicured hands? I know it's not real bur for crissake Chun-li is supposed to be a hardcore fighter, not a debutante.

I honestly see the art director sitting there thinking to himself "I am soooo getting fired for this" after every character model he makes, yet every time he turns them in, he's praised for his artistic genius.

*Takes a bow*

To the people saying SF characters were always disproportionate: No one said they never were, but the difference is they at least didn't look absurd.

Even though Makoto, Ibuki, and Elena had big hands and feet, they were still very feminine and graceful in form. Chun Li always had huge thighs, but she was still a pretty girl. They didn't look like they were overdosing on steroids, nor looked like you swapped a woman's head on a man's body, nor had tumorous growths on them.

This is not exclusive to single profiles or dramatic images, either. It's exactly like Jim Sterling said: When Chun Li does her "yatta!" celebration now, it looks really gross and like a body-building tranny is doing it.

Is there some reason that it's totally okay to make fun of transsexuals, call them names and laugh your head off about it? Because ultimately that's what this post comes off to me as, and it strikes me as markedly unproffesional; and while I realize that you "want to fuck them[...] Without a shadow of regret", that itself comes off as sarcastically dismissive. Which, again, is unprofessional and rude. Wonderful sense of humor you have there.

On another note, good Lord her thumb is disgusting.

If any one whom has played, or even seen, the tekken, & or street fighter series with chun li in it, common sense would tell you that she is a biological female.... Of course game makers reserve the soul right, to make their character[s] looks anyway that they want: Be it in a "straight forward" approach, or "ambiguous", approach… So it is up to them, as to how they want to make Chun Li look... I think, that they were making a [vain] attempt, to convey [appearance wise] to those of us who have bought & or even played the tekken & or street fighter series, the "toned" look, of Chun Li, beside her evident & obvious supernatural abilities…. It didn't turn out the way they thought it would, & instead, dear Chun Li, has become the mockery of some deviant thoughts regarding the status of her gender… Maybe some of you have a kinky side: Maybe, this is the Chun Li, http://img01.gallery.datorrents.com/6/7/3/0/7/footjob00.jpg
