Smithy:Sorry, but it IS the Asians that do the whole overworking thing. You can't do that in America, so they send all their labor to Asia where many people are mistreated. It's just something that's easily recognizable, the same way America,Canada and any other country have obvious shortcomings. It doesn't help to simply dismiss it. What sucks the more I think about this story is the fact that Ono's basically resigned himself to this. It's a tough call when you need to find that balance between doing something you love and excel at, make it work financially and sustain yourself so you can keep doing what you do. In this case, it's 2 out of 3 and well above what most people end up being able to accomplish. He could leave, but that would mean leaving behind everything he's ever worked for and gaining a reputation among the suits as a self-interested turncoat.
It also just so happens that the rein-holders giving Ono and those like him a platform to do what he does are eccentric, inhuman, ivory-tower feudal-era weasel shits.

Japan is in overall major decline and it isn't gonna improve anytime soon. If I were him I'd pack it in and try moving to the States. I think western developers could benefit from having eastern developers to work with and vice versa. Also if he just got tired of game development he probably wouldn't have much trouble making a decent living in the tech industry.

@Pennywise What is the issue then? Oh no, poor Ono. Working 16 hour days 6 days a week in a comfortable office area. Oh whats this, I gotta come in on my day of!? Poor Ono! If he keeps bending over and letting the company ream him, it's nobodys fault but his own. I'm glad he's so passionate about what he does but his own health should be paramount to all other responsibilities he is charged with.

Working environments can be stressful even if you aren't doing hard labor. How many people in here have family who were loggers?

I have a unique perspective of seeing what real, hard, dangerous work can do to a person. Having a chainsaw break and smash your uncle's nose in, nearly killing him. Having a tree fall and clip your other uncle's head, nearly killing him. Having a tree fall the wrong way and pancake your uncle's truck. Having a chainsaw fuck up and gash your father's leg.
That being said while I've never had to do any work like that in my life (at my father's own urging), I've experienced first hand the effects of severe work-related stress. Stress isn't just "strung out", it can physically hurt you. You can you can feel pain and discomfort and all sorts of shit if your work environment gets to be too overwhelming. Of course if you are working somewhere where the business, your coworkers, and your managers all share the same work ethic and values, then this is usually heavily mitigated.
Ideally you put in a day's work, you might be tired but you don't feel stressed and you feel like you did a good day's work and were productive. When you're an in environment where that's not the case that can lead to some serious stress-related problems. Of course though Japan takes their overworking to a whole other level so it's probably not a stretch to say that with him having all his responsibilities, it's probably taking a toll.
Honestly though I say he should just get out. The Japanese game industry is dying. There's no point in trying to save a sinking ship. Yasumi Matsuno got dumped with so much shit when he tried to make FF12 that he just got fed up and decided it wasn't worth his sanity or health, so he just left Squeenix. Even though Capcom wants a high rate of software output, they are sabotaging themselves by putting out offensive levels of DLC. At the end of the day though, Japan is pretty fucked, so everyone over there seems to be stuck in a rock and a hard place. Really I'm shocked more of them aren't coming over here to start over, or anywhere for that matter.

Tell you what. Work your "physical" labor until blood acidity level is "on par with someone who had just finished running a marathon". Keep doing it until you get hospitalized. It's a tradition in Japan to work extremely hard and long hours, but for little pay with almost no breaks? That's not Japanese style, that's Chinese style. No complaining or being an individual? That's North Korean style. I worry that we're losing Japan... birth rates are down, suicide is up, their crazed far right leaning Governor of Tokyo wants to return Japan to the WWII days (not to mention the denial and lack of assistance for the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation victims. So are you even familiar with how your bloods natural pH level works and what effects it? Proper nutrition plays a significant role. Plus no where in the original article was it ever stated that Ono was held at gunpoint to do his job. If he straight up wanted to rest he should of just manned the hell up and told them, "all right bitches I'm Ono, I'm all you cocksuckers got. I need some time off"
I can't help but feel that he's using the nature of the beast as an excuse to do something he loves to the point of his health suffering from it. A notion reinforced when you read the original article in the link when they talk about his nature.
