Is Beyond Good & Evil headed back to store shelves? photo

According to a mysterious GameStop flyer, it appears that Ubisoft may be re-releasing the original Beyond Good & Evil for the very low preorder price of $9.99. While it seems this move would be to promote the upcoming, highly anticipated sequel (OMG BEST SEQUEL EVER!), the timing seems odd. Re-releasing the game this month when the sequel is so far away? It seems strange.

Regardless, if this is true, I beg of you: If you have not played Beyond Good & Evil, please go buy it. I can guarantee you will absolutely adore it. In fact, I will send you a check for ten bucks if you don’t like it. Seriously. I am that confident. And then when the game sells ridiculously well I can take full credit for its success. I AM THE REASON BEYOND GOOD & EVIL PAYS YOUR BILLS! BOW TO ME, UBISOFT!

Wow. Sorry about that.

What do you think? Even though it’s for the aging PlayStation 2, would you be willing to give Beyond Good & Evil a late-to-the-party try? Would you rather see a re-release on a downloadable service like XBLA and PSN? Also, PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME!

[Via N4G -- thanks, Brian!]

Yes! I have been looking for this game for months, I'm glad to see stuff like this happen.

Hell, at ten bucks, I might just buy another copy of this just to support them and make sure that BG&E2 keeps on keeping on.

Needs to be an Xbox Original.

Wow, if I hadn't bought it when it came out I'd get another one. Seriously, BUY THIS GAME if you haven't.

Picked this sucker up for 14 dollars brand spanking new at some retailer a long time ago... played it but didn't think it was amazing. Don't get me wrong, I loved the story and setting and stuff but honestly the gameplay was a either too trial-and-errory or just bland at times. Haven't finished it yet, but I plan on doing so one day... maybe when the sequel rolls along I'll start it up again.

Just for the record, I though I'd post this find:

http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Good-Evil-2-X...21334152&sr=8-3

It says that BG&E 2 will be released May 2009. It's not going to happen, but I thought I'd post it just to make myself feel useful.

Ugh, they're re-releasing the slowdown-ridden and blurry PS2 version.

Even with the unremappable controls, the PC version (available on Steam) is better. If you have the patience to go hunting, though, the best version is on Xbox. It has 480p support, little to no slowdown, and great controls.

I'm with Dexter345. At ten bucks, I'll buy like 6 of them for Christmas stocking stuffers and support.

$10 is a bit pricey for me.

I got my copy a few weeks ago for $5 on a Steam weekend deal. :D

Haven't played it much though. :(

@ grafkhun

I'm with you. Everything about the game was great, aside from the gameplay, which was sort of bland. That said, the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts, and it's definitely something that ought to be experienced at least once.

@bVork,
I actually agree with you. Although the game is a masterpiece, the PS2 version is by far the worst. :(

That's too bad that the PS2 version is considered the worst. I've been looking for this game for a while and can't find it. I may pick this up.

Which version is the best though?

@naia-the-gamer,
The PC version is really good, but I adore the GameCube one. It controls perfectly and, in my opinion, looks the best. :)

I got this for $5 off Steam a few weeks ago.

I feel cheated. It's buggy as shit, and slows down like a motherfucker. That sure told me why I should illegally download games first.

I'd like a copy for the Xbox, but it's not BC supported. I'd download it as an Xbox Original on Live if they released it. I really enjoyed this game on the PS2 way back when.

@ Chad

Hmm, you do bring up a good point, I forgot I had a Gamecube and will probably pick it up for the ol' Cube... you say it's the best looking one eh?

Dude! If this was BC on 360 I would totally buy like ten copies at that price. I'm not even joking. As it is, I'll still probably buy ten copies and use them as gifts or something.

If you haven't played this game yet, pull out your last-gen console from the closet and BUY IT! You will not be disappointed. If the Cube version is being re-released, I'm buying it for my friend's son.

Remember the Cube version will play on the Wii, and the PS2 version will play on 60GB and older 80GB PS3 models.

@Mage
I'm going to assume that the slowdown is due to an nvidia driver, not the game. Nvidia's drivers have been a big problem in the past, not just for BG&E, but for games that they even advertised as supporting, like Far Cry for example. If it isn't nvidia, then it's likely to be an ATI processor problem. There are fixes available if you're willing to look, and you should be. It's worth it, it's an incredible game.

As for the glitches, I've never suffered from these apparent flaws; I've only ever had one problem in the 10 or so play throughs on the 4 formats I own, but all I can say is save often and in different save slots. You haven't been cheated at $5, you've been fucking gifted. That game is a goddamn masterpiece.

Ten bucks? Argh, I bought it full price online a few months ago when the sequel was announced. Totally worth it of course, but still.

This was number one on my GameFly queue for three months before it finally came in for the Gamecube a week ago. Enjoying it moderately so far, although I hope it sucks me in more because right now it kind of just feels like an annoying pearl hunt to get to the next zone. :/

I was at Best Buy the other day and saw that they re-released Disgaea for 20$, and I was like "Fuckin shit, this game has been 40$ used for the longest time." Yoink. I actually got a used copy of Beyond Good and Evil at Game Stop a week earlier and got it for like 6$. It seems like the sweet deals have been flowing in for me all year long. Good time for compulsive game collectors. I have so many games to play now...

this reminds me when all retail stores dropped BYAE to the low low price of 10 bucks about 4 years ago.

People went nutz on forums tellin everybody to pick it up if you haven't already.

I'd totally buy it for $10...if it was the Xbox version, which is supposedly the best. Oh well, if they don't feel like releasing that version, I suppose I can always settle for whatever they're charging on eBay or Goozex.

Chad's got the right idea, Gamecube version all the way. I know that multi-"platform releases that look best on the Gamecube" seems like an illogical statement (damn you Ubisoft and your lazy porting skills!) but it's true. I still remember buying this game on launch day, and having to cushion the blows of how rapidly the games price nose-dived and the supposed cancelation of the sequel, with just how amazing and fun the game was...though some of the stealth segments were a bit tedious.

wHHOO and it is the crappy ugly PS2 version the worst possible way to play it.

when they got a PC version that is 7 times as good looking and playing with special Direct X 9 shaders effects, or even the damn xbox, hell even the gamecube version looks 3 times as good.

and there are brinning the ps2 one that shows the game in the worst way ever?

What the hell.

buy the PC version the consoles look like crap, and the ps2 one is the worst of the crap.

it's $10.

I got this a few months ago for about $9. I'm still waiting on BC, but they (MS/Ubisoft/whoever) stand a better chance on making more money by releasing it on Xbox Live originals.

Do they still sell original Xboxes somewhere?

Yeah the PS2 version is kinda ugly, I had the GC one back in the day and it was fine, and have it for X-Box now and it's good. PC version is on Steam for $10 also if I recall, but if you got nothing else and wanna be buying a new copy, get this one I guess.
