Is Bayonetta still a badass without special effects? photo

God, just look at her. Her levelf of badassery is light years beyond what the average woman could ever dream of achieving. Also, her hair turns into a giant boot which proceeds to kick you in the face if you've been naughty. Seriously, what's this b*tch like in the sack? She might kill you if you can't rise to the occasion.

Well, we've seen her in prototype form already, but the videos after the jump give us a peek at something a bit different -- how Bayonetta's world would look withour special effects. Effects designer Kudo talked about the experience of adding effects to Bayonetta over at the Platinum Games blog, where he explains that people outside the industry often don't understand what his job consists of. They ought to get it after watching these videos, I'd guess!

Oh the things I would do to her if she were real and I wasn't a basement dwelling neckbeard.

she's a badass until someone knocks the glasses off her face...then she can't see shit and walks into things.

Yea, the special effects makes it so much cooler to look at. But why does she always turn naked when using her abilities? Are her clothes magical or something?

She copied her powers off the Battletoads ^_^ Now she just needs a headbutt with some rams horns :3

@Chronic her clothes are her hair and she uses her hair for her attacks. The more she does, the less she wears. Weird huh

Is it just me or does Bayonetta sorta resemble Sarah Palin?

I don't get this game at all. It doesn't look fun or particularly exciting, the character art is bland and generic, and any good gameplay ideas are buried under so much ridiculous fanservice crap that they might as well not exist.

Her clothes are made from hair, and disappear when she attacks? Who comes up with ideas for games like this anyway? Hormone filled 13-year olds desperately hoping that their ridiculous wetdreams could become a reality?

Wait a second... Did those bad guys just drop rings like sonic the hedgehog?

I really don't see what people see in this game, aside from boobs. Plus, she sounds like a man.

@AgentMOO
That's the first thing I noticed too. And given that Sega is distributing the game I'd like to think that it was intentional. As such, this is officially going to be not only the most bad-ass game of the year, but also the best sonic game of the 21st century.

Maybe I'm old, but I actually like seeing what was going on without the effects. I mean... the effects are purty, but man do they add clutter.

@Kraid: True enough. Speaking of which: Moe Moe Niji Taisen Deluxe. Graphic style is totally different, but overall intent is similar enough.

I take my comment back about Bayonetta, and must have been in the wrong mood this morning to recognize what should be taken seriously and what TOTALLY shouldn't...

I still maintain that Bloodrayne is the queen of videogame badasses. Fuck this Bayonetta nonsense. Despite a godawful movie and subpar sequel, Bloodrayne remains my favorite "B game" which are like B movies, only better because they are interactive.

@JonB: Well since the enemies are supposed to be angels, we could argue they are "halos" instead of rings, but do we really want to start a flame war with the X360 fanboys? lol.

On the news, granted, not as spectacular, but you know, gameplay is not something you can get from a video, and as much as the graphics fall, if the gameplay IS good enough the graphics CAN take a second place.

It's kind of interesting how there's pretty much no framerate drop at all with effects on compared to off. I also noticed how I myself didn't really know what he meant by effects until I saw the game without them :)

There's also a video showing off the blood effects on their blog. Bayonetta's blood turns into ROSES when she's hit :D

The question you should ask isn't "why", but "why not"

All women should have clothing made from their hair or other magical material that disappear and reappear when they engage in everyday activity.
The problem with having seen the no effects video (SO clear) is that I now hope the special effects will be toned down (no chance).
Bayonetta's facial expression in the header pic makes me giddy like a schoolboy.
