Is Assassin's Creed 3 coming out this year? photo

VG247 was tipped off about the LinkedIn profile of a 3D animator at Ubisoft Montreal which listed an unnamed Assassin's Creed title with a date of 2010 next to it. The profile of Michael Donnell, since removed from the professional social networking site, listed experience on 2008's Prince of Persia as well as last year's iteration of Assassin's Creed. In addition, it makes reference to an oft-rumored PS3 version of Splinter Cell: Conviction.

It's certainly possible for Ubisoft to get another Templar-slaying title to market this year. The recent revelation that a third Assassin's Creed would again star Ezio and take place in Rome would suggest that a lot of the heavy lifting may have already been done with the last title. Whether quality might suffer is a different matter entirely, but I'm sure they're keeping a close eye on this, being one of Ubisoft's flagship properties.

Are you guys ready to run across rooftops and stab your hand through people's heads again?

Ubi CV says next Assassin’s Creed is due this year, SCC PS3 also seen [VG247 via CVG]

As if the direction they were headed wasn't bad enough, now they're churning out an iteration a year. Yuck.
That said, I'd imagine this is a spinoff title, most likely an iPad game.

This is a terrible idea. They should stick to the 3 story arc, renaissance, then fudal Japan.

A new annual franchise is born.

If this is another full console release then I can't see it being of any worth. If it is some small spinoff release, then it would probably not be of any worth anyway.

I love the concept of Assassin's Creed, I just wish the games weren't so painful to play.

Ipad -blatantly.

Also, Conviction PS3? - win. It's hardly surprising though, when Microshaft says "exclusive" we all know that means TIMED exclusive.

I can guess what it is. Its definitely not AC3. It's a spinoff featuring Ezio for the consoles and it focuses mainly on multiplayer

Gotta agree with the majority here. Assassins Creed is dead to me. Sure would love me some SC though

probably DLC, or a handheld game.

don't really care if UBI release another full AC game, i'll keep playing them until i stop enjoying them.

as a side note i've been playing AC2 for a week or so now, and i totally disagree with the JS review. in fact it's clearly such a personal opinion that i find it ludicrous that so many on this site share it, so i now treat anyone who regurgitates that opinion as a total sheep. i respect the fact that some people won't like any given game, but you only have to look at metacritic to see why i'm suspicious of haters - out of 81 reviews, only 3 gave the game less than 80% so for 80% of dtoid commenters to now think AC2 sucked is ridiculous.

i think gtapradeep broke the story there, it could be a planned multiplayer DLC slated to come out between now and end of 2010

as for people hating a series so much that it hurts them to see sequels...you're crying like infants, how the fuck is that even affecting you? ubisoft controls where you spend your money?? Yuck. pffft.

releasing game sequels so soon after the earlier game is never a good idea - give gamers 2+ years and they'll be more ready and eager for another undertaking.

I am surprised about all of the Assassin hate on this board. AC2 was really good, coming in at number 3 for me last year behind Uncharted and Batman. With that said, it is too early to release AC3 if that is the intention. However, Ubisoft has a reputation for delays, so I am not too worried. By the way, Ubi, what's up with Jade and co.? I need more pork in my gaming diet!

Somehow I just don't see this actually happening. It seems more like it would be the spinoff rather than a true sequel, so it'll be called ACII: ezio's sequel, while a true sequel maybe next year.

I really liked AC II. It just felt right to me. The concept was always great but it was executed much better in part 2 than in part 1. They need to take their time on the next one. Improve the franchise even more. Don't just get complacent because you made a better game than the first one. In this case I'm hoping for a delay.

I had a lot of fun with 2-the combat was weak but the building climbing felt like a Spiderman game should. Still, I'd like to see them move it to a different cultural milieu, like medieval China or Victorian England. A lot of cool settings they could move the story into, why keep it stuck in the Renaissance.

Have you all forgotten that they're releasing a multiplayer version of Assassin's Creed? Couldn't this be it?

@Prince Ghidorah

Interesting, my feelings were the exact opposite. I thought the combat controls felt very natural (even if the AI was crap), but I didn't think the climbing/running was all that well executed. I never understood why I had to hold down 3 buttons to run (left analog, right trigger, A button), yet the same button seemed to be used to do a million different things. The game often assumed that I wanted to jump off of a 4 story building, when all I was doing was holding down the same buttons I used to run. I would have much preferred a dedicated jump button instead of auto-jumping.

It'll take them at least another year to figure out a new form of DRM even more onerous than their last one for AC3!

Dear Ubisoft,

Please, no more of this.

Love, Cadtalfryn

PS. A Far Cry 3 would be cool, thanks.

Dear Ubisoft:

Please don't make AC into the new Madden/Fifa/NHL, but in case you actually do, at least use a different excuse to poor sales than "ZOMG Piracy".

Yours truly (not really)

EdgyDude.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really enjoyed ACII. I was able to overlook some of the control issues and other problems that Jim noted in his review, since I had so much fun with the free running stuff and weird conspiracies in its story.

I thought that this was the multiplayer version that was talked about a few months ago. AC2.5 as it were, since it's still Ezio and not a new character. I highly doubt that they'd just shit out AC3 and be done with it. I CAN see a .5 title though. They did it with AC1 on the PSP.

I'm not as concerned with the fact that the turnaround would be so short as I am with the possibility that they wouldn't give AC3 it's own protagonist and own location/era. That's one of the few things I appreciate about the series; each has its own time and place and assassin. Now, if this is a spinoff or port or something outside of the "proper" 1-2-3 progression, then I don't care at all. It's not like the existing games have reaped some sort of great complexity and depth of gameplay with longer development cycles.

Not to mention, given Ubisoft's track record with AC2, they're probably chomping at the bit to half-develop the next game, charge 60 bucks for it, then sell you the rest of it for 5 bucks a chapter.

The first one was total crap (or the coolest tech demo, whatever), I stopped caring after 2h. I tried the pirated PC version of the 2nd just to see and prove them wrong with their stupid DRM, but it still was a load of BS, better BS, but still not worth my gaming time.

I'd much rather see Assassin's Creed 3 put the player in Desmond Miles' shoes and have him hunt down Templars in modern metropolitan settings. Of course, such an episode would most likely be a final one. Nevertheless, with the current story arc, there can't be too many more episodes, [SPOILER] what with the 12.21.12 thing

Seriously? How are people bashing AC2? I just finished it (late, I know) and it is one of the best games I have ever played. Everyone I talk to LOVES it. When I went into Gamestop to trade in AC1 for 2, everyone in the store--customers and sales people alike--came over and all started and saying what an awesome ride I was in for. And they were right!!! The game rocks. Haters gon' hate, I guess.
