IRS advocate likes taxes for virtual goods

IRS advocate likes taxes for virtual goods photo
     Money

The whole "should virtual goods be taxed?" debate has been a matter of concern for quite a while now, and while I doubt many of us are keen on the idea of giving the government even more money to misuse, at least one person thinks that politicians should get a slice of that downloadable Horse Armor.

"Economic activities in virtual worlds may present an emerging area of tax noncompliance, in part because the IRS has not provided guidance about whether and how taxpayers should report such activities," claims IRS taxpayer advocate Nina Olson. Of course, it's dressed up in a way that makes it attractive to the taxpayer -- with guidelines on how to declare income from virtual goods, you don't run the risk of getting into trouble.

At the very least, this isn't so far being presented as sales tax, but just as an extension of claiming one's own personal income. Since every scrap of cash you make is expected to be reported, it makes sense that the IRS ought to issue guidelines on how you can do that with money made online.

That said, however, slopes can be slippery, and I'm sure this one is covered in soap. I personally feel that sales tax on virtual goods is inevitable in America. It's far too big a cash cow for the government to ignore, and I can see the IRS licking its lips over joining China and Australia when it comes to virtual taxation. It's bound to happen, although we're not all bound to like it.

This is potentially double taxation. If you buy a point card in a store, you often pay the tax upfront. If you're then taxed on buying the virtual good, you've been taxed twice. Who's going to keep tabs on which purchases are from a point card and which are from a credit card?

this is a major problem even on PSN... I buy the PSN $20 card... they tax me on it.. and when I buy SSF2THDR... I get taxed on that $15 purchase as well.. thats just fucking bullshit...

which means... I cant buy 2 $10 games with my $20 PSN card... I gotta use my credit card to pay for the fucking taxes... the ENTIRE REASON I bought the PSN card was so I wouldnt have to use my credit card...

also... the picture is fucked up yo...

@nilcam:

For me GameStop has never charged me tax on MS Point cards, they see it as a trade in currency rather than an online purchase.

I believe i watched that match. Canada vs Japan semifinals. And yes she basically got sodomized in that event (in more ways that one apparently). But that japanese chick had some serious skills.

Another Canadian gold for canada (Canadian gold is a term where canada achieves a personal or national best. When that occurs, regardless if they gain a medal or not, we call it a Canadian gold because we can't win any damned events!)

If you are getting charged sales tax for your point cards for any console, you need to find free shipping online, because you are getting screwed.

Really though? MS moon money will be a living HELL with tax. At least the PSN cards you can rationalize .04% tax.

Taxes -unlike girl on girl sodomy- are not sexy. We are taxed way too heavily as it is. Fewer taxes + fewer politicians = happy citizens! We are not happy right now.

It seems like a lot of people are missing what's being taxed.

They're simply trying to tax when people take virtual currency (gold, linden dollars, etc.) and turn it into real money (dollars). Likewise this could probably be applied towards selling other online goods (your avatar for example) for real money).

As long as the tax only applies when people take virtual goods and turn them into real things then I can't really find a reason to dislike it. If they try to tax virtual wealth that's staying virtual wealth (especially if they tax it in real dollars) then that's a whole different story.

Logo beat me to it: This isn't about points cards or buying DLC, this is about goods in virtual worlds (IE MMOs). My problem with this is how does the government actually determine how much my +12 Sword of Baddassry is actual worth in real life money?

The idea sucks ass. I'm from the U.K, but if this were to happen everywhere, that's when I start shopping abroad or dealing in forums etc. We already get raped on tax in the U.K enough (though this post is about the U.S.

Who on earth would give the government extra money, especially after already having our trust misplaced in banks? Fuck that.

As Logo mentions, they are talking about income made from sale of virtual goods. If one guy makes X dollars driving trucks, and another guy makes X dollars selling WoW gold, it makes sense that they pay the same amount of money in taxes.

At least in the US, personal assets are generally not taxed, so people who never "cash in" their virtual goods will likely never be taxed.

This is about virtual stuff; but @Magnalon: even if I buy MS or Wii points with a credit card, it is taxed. I pay something like $21.35 for a $20 card OR a virtual purchase. So, I choose the $20 option, and pay the $21.35.
same with iTunes, etc.

That's a legal move called "Butt Drag" or "Skinning"

"...a former Parker High School student. Seventeen-year-old Jerome Hunt faces 21 counts of rape and attempted rape. Each count carries up to 25 years in prison.

But Hunt's lawyer Mike Butler claims the complaints came from fellow Parker wrestlers who were simply victims of a legitimate wrestling move."

The Picture is funny, but putting tax on Virtual Goods is not! Virtual goods like wow gold, downloadable PC stuff, and a virtual pet are not considered as real-life assets, so they should really clarify things up.
