Irony alert! Lose your job for playing The Office in the office

Irony alert! Lose your job for playing The Office in the office photo
     Does it suck?

Sure, we all know that the upcoming Full House dating sim, Kimmy Gibler’s Adventure in Romance, and the highly anticipated Golden Girls first-person shooter, Attack on the Lanai, are going to be huge, international hits … but how will a videogame based on critically adored (and Chad approved!) sitcom The Office fare?

Well, developer MumboJumbo (of Luxor fame) hopes it will fare darn well as it just announced it will be bringing the funniest show on television to a Nintendo DS, PSP, and PC near you by fall of this year.

In the game, players will control bobblehead versions of the sitcom’s main characters, handling jobs and playing practical jokes around the Dunder-Mifflin virtual office. Um, yay?

Says MumboJumbo VP of product development Mike Suarez:

We were anxious to expand our audience with a property that has broad appeal and works well as a game. It will help us to demonstrate that casual games are the true mass videogame market.

I still have no idea how anyone could think The Office would translate well do a videogame, but given my love for all things Kelly, I am going to give everyone involved in this random creative decision the benefit of the doubt.

What do you all think? Is a videogame based on a sitcom a disaster waiting to happen, or could this game start a new, successful trend in the industry (Family Ties RPG!)?

Not everything needs a license. Is there a "My Name is Earl" version of Stratego? No. Do we need one? No. Didn't they learn that copies of "That's so Raven" sit unpurchased on store shelves?

Two words, people: Journey Escape.

Someone's buying them, last I heard Raven Simone was like a mini-Oprah. Wasn't there a Friends version of Monopoly? Monopoly has whored out quite a bit.

There's only one Office and it's English.

Oh, and this game idea is terrible.

considering the wide audience this show pulls in, and the willingness of those people to really get into the show -- actual vested emotions, this idea should have no problem making bank.

i don't own a psp ... YET.

Couldn't be worse than the Home Improvement game. And yes, they really made that.

I agree with uptonogood in that a game based on The Office, particularly if it's on the PC, will make enough money to justify it's existence. But will it suck? Yes. I can only imagine hearing the same gag or bit of dialogue 20 times, when it was really only funny the first couple of times. That's how these games work, after all.

And somewhere, someone will always think that joke is funny. No matter how many times he hears it, it will be yuk-yuk-yuk all day long.

ALWAYS.

FOREVER.

And I hate that person. I really, really do.

I love the Office but a game?

Makes me think of either Home Alone on gameboy or Desperate House Wife games.

They should make an office game where you did paper work, take coffee breaks, sexually harass co-workers, repeat five times a week. On the weekends you stay home and pay bills and beat your wife. What? Shut up!

@s0lesurviv0r

Monopoly has a 3rd party that handles all of that. Every non-standard edition of Monopoly is up to a licensee who gratuitously whores the game to any and all comers.

Somehow, I knew that some snobby sitcom watcher (re: UK-er) would eventually bring up the stupid "English Office is better" argument. They're both funny and worthwhile, end of discussion.

Back on topic, I'd prefer to see some SERIOUS whoredom done justice in this genre...

Scrubs - The Surgical
Denny Crane, Lawyer
or even
Transformers - The Game... Oh wait.... Maybe the whoredom is already headed out of control.

@Necros, Chad and Beta: I like saying it this way,

"Don't give me $100! Why would I want $100? I was already given £100 in England a couple of years ago, and it was worth more."

Truth be told, I like the idea of seting up practical jokes.

I just wonder if it will end up being a Spy vs Spy mod where Roy puts a spring loaded boxing glove in a closet and that Jim opens the closet and POW!

Or if it will be extra clever, like ou have to tell everyone to call Dwight's phone every time he gets up to go to the bathroom or something. Okay so maybe not extra clever.

Is a videogame based on a sitcom a disaster waiting to happen...

Brit hit sitcom The Young Ones did it with a Commodore 64 game back in the mid 80s. Ditto for Alf and Harry and the Hendersons... and who could forget those?! Anyone? Beuller?
