Ironic Commando: Is Japan the last hope for Bionic Commando? photo

[Destructoid's Japanese correspondent, 50ft. Samurai, reports in on how Capcom's Bionic Commando is faring in Japan.]

Bionic Commando, as you have heard, did not exactly set the world on fire. Despite a lengthy development process and a good deal of publicity, the game tanked and the reviews were mediocre at best. Capcom probably wasn’t pleased that one of their games -- aimed squarely at a Western audience -- was so coolly received.

However, last week's issue of Famitsu gives both versions of the game a 34/40, beating out all other games reviewed in the same issue! Three of the reviewers even gave the game a 9, with one dissenting opinion scoring it a 7.  Those that praised the game were impressed with its “excellent swinging action” and the fact that it made the player “feel like a Hollywood movie hero.” One reviewer even pointed out that while the game “has the freedom of a modern 3D game, the careful layout and fact that you can expect to die quickly makes it feel like an older classic.” Another even praised the story and its ability to “present continuous thrills.”

This pretty much flies in face of reviews of the game until now, which thought the story was crap and the game too constricting.  These sentiments are echoed by the Famitsu reviewer who scored it a 7, along with a jab at its disappointing multiplayer. Nonetheless, Famitsu’s score is equivalent to an 85, which is considerably higher than its current average in the English-speaking world.

Which makes this samurai wonder: Has Capcom achieved some sort of reverse alchemical miracle with Bionic Commando? Has it, in the attempt to appeal to western tastes created a game that the Japanese will love? Has this freaky experiment, this melding of cultures created something unexpected? And will it destroy us all? You can follow Capcom Japan’s tie-up with Japanese singer Ichirou Mizuki here and stay tuned to Destructoid for how the game sells.

OF COURSE it was going to sell badly!

I mean, Bionic Commando: Rearmed had a bigger marketing push than it did.

It's a game about a man with a mullet named "Bionic Commando", I know this might give some of you nostalgia but try to approach that from an outsider's perspective.

All the sudden I'm curious as to why the game failed so bad... maybe I'll give it a shot some day.

I'm willing to bet that a price drop to $30-40 would make this fly off the shelves. But at $60, I just don't see that many people willing to take the risk on nostalgia.

I found the swinging mechanics to be pretty excellent, although they're probably not what most people had in mind (Spider-Man, maybe?). Took a few moments to get used to, but once I did, I found that it was pretty rewarding. Not that the game doesn't have its problems, but if everyone's big issue was the swinging (which it seems to be), that seems a bit odd.

No surprises there, the bionic arm is just like the skill crane-arm games they love so much!

I just started this last night for a bit....kinda wonky. The "radiation zones" suck the will to play right outta me, as you can swing through them and die, then start over from the beginning of the level, cutscene and all. Ugh. I do like how it looks, and the opening screen, with the piano version of the OG theme is really neat, but I've yet to see these "Continuous Thrills" the internet mentions.

It might go down well in japan, since they sometimes find it hard to develop games like this. I hope it does well for Capcom.

i played it for about 3 days and had to take it back to bbuster. I was having fun with it and dug that Mr. Bionic told Suepr Joe to pretty much fuck off! I am definately going to rerent just so I can play thru. Specially sine I heard that *SPOILER* there is mention of a certain
Albatross making a return in a possible sequel. The idea of fighting that big ass "thing?" while swinging around sounds damn kool to me. Question though....who would win in a fight between the Albatross and the baddest version of the Metal Gear thing?

It might just be that since the Japanese have such little experience with shooters, they can't tell when one is mediocre.

Bah I don't trust Famitsu that much anymore. They used to be crotch-burning reviewers but now they give generic games high scores.

yeah...I'm still tempted by this game. The MP demo blew goats and reviews across the board suggest I should back the fuck up- but theres certainly something vaguely alluring about those gameplay videos. The giant worm fight looks kinda fun and the verticality of some city stretches seems impressive.

A bargain bin purchase if ever i see it.

Screw you famitsu! I find this so insulting that a game reviewer can drop it's standards like that. If I'm correct they gave around the same score to Earthbound and MOTHER 3. Usually I don't get pissed off at scorces before reading reviews but WTF I bet they were just fans of the seriesbecause those games aren't on NEARLY on the same scale. Please Destructoid stay assholes for the truth!

The botched Demo killed any entheusiasm I had for this, I might wait for a price drop and see what the game is like but I wont be buying it for MP.

$50 each was a bit too steep IMO for most games in the past gens. This generation, a game has to really excite me to be a $60 purchase. I find myself waiting on quite a few titles (including this one) to drop before I buy 'em.

It doesn't help that the PC version (you know - the one that has to support a broad range of hardware and software quirks) is almost always cheaper than the console (locked-down environment) version. That just adds insult to injury.
