inXile-developed, Bethesda-published Hunted announced photo

Hunted: The Demon's Forge, "a dark fantasy" and a "story of sacrifice and addiction," has been announced today. Developed by inXile Entertainment (2004's The Bard's Tale) and published by Bethesda Softworks, Hunted is an attempt to update the classic dungeon crawler experience of old, with a heavy focus on cooperative play.

The game puts players in the roles of E'lara and Caddoc, as they work together using range, melee, and magic attacks to take out rat-bat-looking baddies and other monsters. With its focus on a cooperative experience, each character has his or her own strengths -- E'lara, ranged attacks; Caddoc, melee.

"We looked at a lot of co-op games that were out there, and we found that they did a lot of tethering of the players," inXile's Michael Kaufman told us during a demo last week at GDC. "We took a different approach; we wanted to spread the players out, use the environment, use the world. So the spells and skills that we created are based on these ideas."

The Unreal Engine-powered Hunted is scheduled to hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. I'll have a more in-depth previewing hitting later today. In the meantime, check out the screens, which include your first look at the game's Wargar creatures (a.k.a Ratty McBat Dudes).

I will be hopeful of this new "dark fantasy" game, though I hold no promises as Tony Jay will not be narrating... *sniff*

Awww....I was hoping there was a math element incorporated into the game. That'd of been swell.

@ Zeebad: Is that a bad thing?

Anyway, this game needs Simon Templeman! Hell, every game needs Simon Templeman! If I were a dev I'd make a game called Simon Templeman: The Game and have Simon Templeman as every character.

This is the sort of game I would play, and the fact that inXile is making it makes me want to coo like a little babe.

I love the 2004 re-envisioning of A Bard's Tale. Love it.

I actually have been longing for a coop dungeon crawler on the consoles, but one of those with up to 4 players on the same screen. Online coop is nice and all but nothing beats having a bunch of people on the same console trying to steal all the items for themselves while killing monsters and bosses.

Wow. That's some spandex-wearing, muscle-rippling, embarassing failure to understand the most basic points of what makes Demon's Souls a good game. Sucks to see Bethsoft continuing their EXTREEM angle that they began with Wet.

What made Demon's Souls good was that it was dark, nasty, mean, nobody was there to help you, and you weren't a superhero.

Also, it was original.

Also, it was difficult.

Also, it was the first real innovation in RPGs for about 4 years.

I'm sure plenty of non-Sony owners will get the trite, popcorn pleasures they think they're missing in Demon's Souls out of this one.
