Introducing your Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition photo

Another BioWare game, another luxurious special edition for you to spend obscene amounts of money on. We're all getting somewhat tired of special editions here at Destructoid, but nevertheless, there is plenty of chicanery included in the Mass Effect 2 box for those who are still wowed by trinkets and pennywhistles.

Here's what the Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition will include:

  • Obligatory tin case
  • 48-page hardcover art book
  • Issue 1 of the Mass Effect Redemption comic book
  • Bonus DVD with "making of" footage
  • Exclusive in-game weapons and armor

The special edition is priced at $69.99 on Xbox 360 and $59.99 on PC. Does this look tempting to you, or are you getting sick and tired of all these special editions? In any case, the special edition box art and exclusive armor are both featured in our gallery, so hit that and check out the hotness.

Edmonton, Alberta (November 5, 2009) – Recruit your crew and fight for the lost! Leading video game developer BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that the internationally acclaimed Shooter RPG Mass Effect™ 2 will also be released as a Collectors’ Edition in limited quantities. Available on January 26 in North America (Jan 29 in EU) alongside the standard edition, the Collectors’ Edition of Mass Effect 2 comes in a premium, tin case and includes the full version of the game, a 48-page hardcover “Art of Mass Effect 2” book, Issue 1 of the Mass Effect Redemption comic book, and a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes and making-of videos. In addition, the Mass Effect 2 Collectors’ Edition will include unique in-game weapons and armor that can only be obtained by purchasing this version. With its larger-than-life hero Commander Shepard, intense shooter action, nuanced characters and a rich storyline, Mass Effect 2 is one of the most anticipated titles of 2010.

“We’re really excited to roll out this Collectors’ Edition featuring so many unique items, including special Collectors’ Edition armor and weapons and content that will surprise Mass Effect fans,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “The limited edition comic book and bonus DVD will really enhance and expand the overall Mass Effect 2 experience.”

The Mass Effect trilogy is an emotionally charged science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets. In Mass Effect 2, players will once again step into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, commanding their crew of some of the most dangerous operatives from across the galaxy on a mission so challenging that it’s potentially suicidal. Featuring intense shooter action, a rich futuristic storyline, space exploration and emotionally engaging character interaction, the game delivers an unparalleled cinematic experience.

Mass Effect 2 will be available on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PC. The Mass Effect 2 Collectors’ Edition will retail at an MSRP of $69.99 on Xbox 360 and $59.99 on PC. Heh, I'm a total sucker for tin cases, plus I wanted to check out the comic anyway, and exclusive in-game stuff is always good too. So yeah, I'll probably be picking this up.

I actually prefer the regular edition box art.

Weird armor. Slick box art tho. And an art book...*taps chin*

I like artbooks. and really a 40 page hardcover artbook even if it's small like the Persona 3 one that came in the original Persona 3 is easily worth another $10 as I've spent a lot more on a lot less when it comes to artbooks. Hell one of the best purchases I've made was Skottie Youngs Hardcover Artbook that cost me $100. not to mention a 3 or 4 dollar comic depending on how much DH is charging. I still haven't gotten my previews yet....but for an extra ten bucks it looks like this time they are providing a good deal of value as good luck finding any artbook for $6-7. funny enough that's the only part of it I would care about and it really does depend on the quality of the art inside.

I love that box art. Then again, for the extra cash, and my love of Mass Effect, this was kind of a no brainer anyway. I will admit, it seems unnecessary, but I want that box art and the art book. I might actually watch the bonus DVD as well.

'The Mass Effect 2 Collectors’ Edition will retail at an MSRP of $69.99 on Xbox 360 and $59.99 on PC.'

Did you even read the press release you made a front page of?

And collector editions, with full art books, make me drool. The making of DVD's are also usually very interesting. Oh, and considering how much Bioware rocks, I don't mind showing them my support.

I've never given a damn about "Making Of" DVDs and I'm not about to start now.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by this one. Pass.

The armor and gun are badass, although I'm not sure it's worth it since you will probably replace them within a few hours of gameplay...unless it's some uber overpowered armor and gun but probably not since that'd defeat the whole play the game thing.

I'd spend the extra $10. Consider it done.

Very cool. Mass Effect is one of the few games that I own a collector's edition of. I've been waiting for them to announce the ME2 one so I could get it ordered on amazon. 70 is reasonable enough.

I really liked the first game's limited edition with the tin-box, the extra background info and the making of DVD; so getting this a no-brainer for me.

Though converted to British pounds, that's about £42-45, right? That's reasonable enough.

I don't mind the collector's editions that are $10 more, but beyond that price I lose interest. I'll probably go for this one.

I did this for Dragon Age, but then I LOVE Baldur's Gate. This? I dunno. Doesn't seem too special to me. Where's the soundtrack??? I would have done it for that, but the fact that they are making us buy it separately is irksome here.

I was hoping for a uber-limited edition version like the one for Dead Space.

Either way, I'll purchase it.

So this is a no-brainer for me.

I need to buy more collector's editions of games. At any rate, I was hoping for a CE of Mass Effect 2. I'm totally getting it for the PC. Oh and hardcover art books for the win.

I really hate tin case; I'm obsessively compulsive for homogeneity on my shelf. If the tin housed a regular game case, then I'd likely buy it for the extras. I think I'll just skip this one since I didn't buy the first game's CE either.

My first ever Collector's Edition of a game was Fallout 3 last year, just because I'm old enough to have played the originals when they came out and loved them. I was so excited. Anyway, that package wasn't too bad. I liked the artbook a lot, it came in a lunchbox, and had a DVD and bobblehead. This sounds about the same, minus a toy, but has in-game things... wish they'd give details on the items, because I don't want some crazy shit right at the beginning of the game that will fuck up the difficulty of the rest of the experience. Otherwise I'm just going to scrap it for Omni-Gel. I'll probably end up upgrading my preorder to this though... I'm a sucker like that.

I managed to swap my standard Mass Effect for a CE that someone traded in, and it was just average. The case was way too large, so it won't fit in a DVD rack. As long as they rectify that, I'll be good.

Plus, it's Mass Effect, and I have a feeling I won't be able to walk away from this.

Yeah, I'm buying it.

Ehh...the bonuses aren't really that cool to me. I think the box art is boring as hell, too...so no thanks Bioware. But I'll preorder the original version of the game and go to your midnight release if you have one!

I was planning on it anyway, and a $70 collectors edition isn't too expensive for a series that I have (up until this point) really enjoyed.

YES! Art book! That is the only thing I felt was missing from my copy of Dragon Age... Not sure the cloth map is as good as an art book but man, it is good!

Nice, a hardcover art book! I liked how they had one in the first CE, plus a similar-sized reference manual of the universe with more art, but the compromise there was that they were printed manual-style. As long as that first comic isn't digital or something, looks like a worthwhile package and a good way to avoid the craptastic regular cover.

@ JamnOnTheOne

It's better that they don't have an Ultra Limited Edition like Dead Space. That way, when you buy it, you won't hear about how much you spent on one game from your friends for months.

I agree with Oncomouse, a cloth map of space would really seal the deal here.

That aside, an extra $10 for a groovy case, a 48-page art book, a "making of" DVD, a comic book, and some awesome in-game armor? I'm glad I held off pre-ordering from Gamestop, this is sounding like one hell of a deal.

Somehow NOW Dtoid is getting tired of special editions? I remember reading about a couple of them and how "sexy/cool/sweet" they looked in the last few weeks on this very site! Oh, but ME 2 is the one that breaks the proverbial camel's back? Come on!

I guess if it had Atlus slapped on it and came with a plushie of Wrex we'd be cool with it, right?

I'm just f'king with ya though. Well, mostly.
