Into The Pixel: more evidence for games as art photo

Art being subjective and all, it's easy enough to say something is art when it's really just a pile of festering dog crap you passed on your way to buy beer. Add games into the formula, and you get an even bigger argument brewing: Can video games be considered art?

Into the Pixel is a project celebrating the art of the video game, following in the tradition of such fine projects as I am 8 Bit, but going with a modern vibe rather than retro. The full exhibit will be shown to the public at E for All, however,  you still have until May 4th to enter your own work into the show. This is their fourth annual year and the entries have been nothing short of stunning. Check out the gallery to see some of the 2006 entries.

If you want to cast your vote for games as art, this is an excellent way to do so. If you'd rather take the Kokomo route, you can paint your body with chocobo and streak down the street screaming. Not quite as classy as a painting, but art is what you make it, or some other such proverbial bullsh*t.

#3 and #8 are awesome. I would probably frame them and display them in my house given the chance. The train junk yard is just really well done.

Is it bad that the only one I definitely recognize is #8 (the art for the bonus disc of MGS3: Subsistence)? I think #9 is the concept art for that next-gen Turok game, but I'm not sure.

Can we really use concept art in the argument for videogames as art?

None of these images are from a game are they?

They go into the creation of the game. Most of these things are re-created in an interactive space so being part of the process, I say yes

*grumble* *gripe* *pontificate* *filibuster*

I've seen some of this stuff on conceptart.org. Mostly solid work. As for video games being art, well, when a game changes the way I look at the world (I mean other than sizing up other cars on the road to see how big my katamari would have to be to roll 'em up), I'll let you know. It will happen, sooner or later...

Anyone who doesn't think games are art, I'm pretty curious to hear what their definition of "art" is.

Games aren't art, IMHO.

Would you mind giving your definition of the word art then, ninjajuice? I'm genuinely curious.

Is it just me or, considering videogames as an art is a completely different subject as seeing some artworks included in videogame.

Just to clarify: I don't consider photography as an art just because it portraits paintings that are themselves work of art.
