Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Dave over at ichabod13 had a chance to chat with 8-year old Ben Eberle, better known to most as "that kid who is way better at Guitar Hero than you are." Destructoid readers should be familiar with Ben, as we've been awed by His Little Majesty's greatness not once, but twice.

In the interview, Ben is joined by his father, whose name is apparently "Ben's Father." The little shredder spouts such Guitar Hero tips as "Concentrate and have fun," and in a shocking twist, reveals his secret technique:
"I don’t use specific fingers to hit the frets. I just let my fingers work together to finish the song."

Oh! Well that puts everything into perspective; completing Buckethead's "Jordan" on Expert should be breeze now that I know I have to let my fingers work together. Silly me!

Ben, I joke because you scare me. Please come over to my house and help me unlock some of these achievements.

Agent Nixon: I too laughed at that ... mostly because I thought of it as something perverted.

You, my friend, are twisted.

I actually nixed a sentence about having a sleepover because of sick individuals like you.

That song is just sickly hard. I was fortunate enough to watch my friend beat it back in Illinois. In all fairness he is Asian, he is is from Indonesia or something. The crazy things is that he uses one finger where there are note runs, its crazy.

Dude, did you see what I just posted? Of course I'm twisted. Plus, your comment made me think of this dueling analog strip:

For as much time as people put into this game it's rather sad that the effort put in is totally a waste in real life. Maybe a few people will actually try to pick up a real guitar and put in the same effort as they are putting in the game. We could use a few more good musicians.

Anyway, as good as the game seems, and even though I've never been involved in music of any kind (other than listening), I actually refused to play it and got myself a real guitar 2 months ago. It's actually a bit of a large initial learning curve, but with the time put in that I would have otherwise been gaming it's actually coming along.

Maybe a few people who are getting into GH will also be interested in trying the real thing.

OMFG, that is a tough song. I wonder what the beta testers of that game did. Their arms much be so damn tired.

@ snapper:

Can't the same thing be said about most video games in general? If you play video games, period, it's kind of silly to view any particular game as a "waste in real life." I don't play Rainbow Six with the intention of ever putting together an anti-terrorist crew.

And I don't play NBA Homecourt because the option to go actually play basketball isn't there; I play because I will never, ever be as good at basketball in real life. It's also a completely different experience, fun and rewarding in ways that actually playing ball are not (it's not better, it's not worse ... it's different).

I taught myself to play guitar fifteen years ago, so I don't feel bad playing Guitar Hero. It's FUN. That's the point of most games, simply to be fun.

As far as people picking up and playing a real guitar, it happens. I know a few people who've ventured into the realm of an actual six string after playing Guitar Hero.

A few clarifications, Ben's Father wanted to keep his name off the interview, so I respected that. My website is Ichabod13 not Icabod :P And his last name is Eberle not Heberle :P Digg it if ya liked it from the main page :P

Yeah, um...I know I have small hands, but I gotta say, that green-blue-orange stretch kills, and this kid — who’s a full 12 years younger than I am, and whose fingers must each be at least a full inch and a half shorter than mine — pulls it off with ease. It’s crazy! And I’m actually pretty good at the games! I mean, I beat the first game on Expert and I only have to beat “Free Bird” to complete the second game on Expert, but I barely made it through most of the songs on levels 7 and 8 (discounting “Free Bird”, of course; I can only get through 74% of that song before failing).

I don’t just feel inadequate as a Guitar Hero gamer; I feel emasculated.

The only way I got so good at GH was by playing it a lot. I'd play it with friends a few times a week, and it wasn't long before I was up to hard, and then expert. So...maybe the kid has lots of friends!

After a while though, it probably just looks like he's bragging. "Hey wanna come over and watch me rape this song that you can't even comprehend?"

GH is different than other games/simulations because it uses a controller that is similar to the real life one. However, it is still different enough that for the most part, none of the repetition that you go through can actually translate to a real life guitar. The only positive aspect of GH with real music is that it probably helps with rhythm.

Now, if someone made a GH hardcore where I could plug my real guitar into it and play along that would be fantastic. I could really speed up my learning.

Wouldn't a positive aspect also be that the game is fun? I'd say that's pretty positive.

heh, i like the fact that MS doesn't use this kid to promote the game b/c of the ESRB rating of 'T'. i really liked his fathers comment that he understands the ratings and felt his child was mature enough to play the game.

mature parenting? well rounded children? what is this world coming to?!?!

"I don’t use specific fingers to hit the frets. I just let my fingers work together to finish the song."

I know how stupid this sounds, but I think what he means is that he doesn't try to 1234 on GRYB and RYBO, simply because his hand is too small, and that if he tries to, he'll fail miserably.
