I mean, I can only think of one other game in video game history where a Native American plays the lead character, and that is Blackthorne. Even if they mention what heppened to him between 1 and 2 I think that'd be enough. :)
Also, it had portals before Portal.
This just keeps sounding worse and worse a departure from the first game. This is not Prey AT ALL but rather some Star Wars/Mass Effect/Blade Runner mashup. While I am a fan of all of those, I don't want them infecting everything I play. Keep your <other franchises> outta MY Prey! I lust Mass Effect but if I want that experience, I will play THAT game.
Q: Why the hell don't they just make an entire new/separate series based on the Bounty Hunter concept!?
A: Because there is an install-base in the Prey series. It has the big, recognizable name, a pedigree, if you will. We all know publishers never take a risk on a new IP and are sufficed with milking tried and true games into multi-sequel franchises.
*spoilers* Sounds like they're just going to make Tommy some annoying Omnipotent God figure(That which he becomes at the end of the first game) that "appears" to your character every now and then, but more annoying than 'Grandfather' did in Prey1.
Feelsbadman
True, but the comparison ends there. (In Prey, they added variety to the level design, but the player had no control over them.)
Still, it was a decent game with some interesting levels and Turok-like weapons. Definitely worth a playthrough!
Make a new Star Wars/Mass Effect/Blade Runner/Metroid/ManWithNoName series, don't drastically change one of my favorite games because you know no one will buy your new IP as opposed to one with an 'established brand' name.
Hell, it's basically the only reason I'm buying this game. If I wanted Mass Effect(which I do) I will play Mass Effect(which I will).
I'm not the only one that feels like this, we are currently debating this very topic in the FORUMS!
Just because it plays differently doesn't mean the story can't fit within the game. Games can have varied gameplay concepts and still keep within the same lore. It's called Prey, not Doom With Portals for a reason.
Or remembered what the fuck Prey was.
@Daxelman's second comment: The only reason I am interested in this? The name. Prey was a GOOD game. It wasn't INCREDIBLY-OMFG-AMAZING(as some critics like to call it Doom 3 with portals) but this is definitely an issue of brand recognition over risk in terms of what Bethesda is doing. Anyone who knows even a fraction of how this industry works knows that.
I am still buying this game, which is why I'm allowed to have my dissenting opinion. Unless, we're not allowed differing opinions? :)
The story hasn't changed, it's expanding. Obviously, with Tommy in the first game going all -spoilers- DemiGodAlien like whatever at the end of the first game, there are obviously some other forces/factors at work in the Prey universe. Maybe Prey 2 plans to expand on those forces. We don't fucking know because the game's year out from release at most.
I'm just saying, if Prey 2 was a more impressive experience than Doom with Portals, I might be inclined to agree with you, but it wasn't; It was Doom with Portals, and if they want to change that to continue on with the story, it's fine by me. It's none of our place to say what Prey is and what Prey isn't. It's Bethesda's IP, not ours, and they can damn well make Prey 3 a mini game collection featuring the Pony's from My Little Pony.
If they say that's Prey 3, then you have to suck it up and deal with it.
@Daxelman: Bloody fucking hell lol I'll miss it and will shed buckets of tears T_T.
What I want though is to see that gun that absorbs elemental energy come back and use the power of the sun (I think it was the sun anyways) to blow everything to hell lol.
@rammstein
"I don't want them infecting everything I play"
Ridiculous.
"...eliminating any RISK in creating a new IP by completely destroying another?"
Yes. Because when Prey 2 is released Prey 1 will simply cease to exsist. All copies, your memories and even your game saves will wink out of existence.
Sir. You are a prime example of today's negative gamer. You know very little about the game but because you played and enjoyed the first one you have a magical right to piss all over the sequel because it isn't exactly like the first one.
What makes your case very interesting is that it's a "franchise" that so far only has 1 completed game in it. There's no set universe or cannon to adhere to.
Far be it from me to stifle ambition, but I don't feel that Human Head are up to the task of creating something that looks like it's attempting to rival Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. According to Wikipedia, Human Head Studios haven't produced a video game since 2006. I really don't feel that the studio has the necessary experience and nous to pull off Prey 2 successfully. But that's just my opinion.
I don't know that much about Prey or do I care that much but your comment on how they are both FPSs bothered me. What if on Mass Effect 3 it had a top down view and all the fighting was turn based. And rather than fighting yourself you had to collect team members to do it for you? It would basically be a Pokemon rip-off. It would still be an RPG but drastically different to previous Mass Effects.
/Pointless Tangent
You want to know why? BECAUSE BIOWARE FUCKING SAID SO.
Again, it could be My Little Pony in space, but if Bioware makes it say Mass Effect 3 on the box, then it's Mass Effect 3, and you'll have to suck it up and deal with it.
"But if it's Bethesda's way of completely eliminating any RISK in creating a new IP by completely destroying another? THAT, is what I have a problem with."
It's Human Head's game, always has been. If this is where they want to take THEIR series, then so be it.
This is like arguing that Aliens shouldn't have been made because they changed so much about the original movie.
