I am really ok with him ending it in a trilogy, what I just want them is a darn localization effort.
I was never really expecting another Mother game, I just want them to localize Mother and Mother 3. I want to OWN them, goddammit!
I'm glad Dtoid has finally mentioned the Mother 4 project. Yeah, its a fan game, which usually has a negative connotation, but we all know how dedicated/fanatical the Mother community is. I thought it was pretty cool that Shigesato Itoi even gave an open invitation for someone else to take a shot at the franchise. So far the sprite work and the music look really promising.
While I did love Mother 3 (one of my favorite games of all time), I'm kind of glad that there isn't a Mother 4 (and I'm cautiously optimistic about the fan game). The Mother games, besides being very funny and pretty awesome to play, also had a deep expanding narrative with lovable characters and some genuinely scary and sad moments. And while may have dealt with some corny themes like the power of love (Mother), the bonds of friendship (Mother 2/Earthbound), and the importance of family (Mother 3), it all felt honest, unlike other games. It also ended well with Mother 3 (albeit very sad), providing closure and a sense of satisfaction.
The point I'm trying to make is this: Like the Lord of the Rings, each of the Mother games by themselves were great, but together as a whole, they were absolutely amazing. That required a lot of work by both Itoi and his team, and something I don't think will be achieved again, even if Nintendo made a Mother 4.

COCKBLOCK. Well, not really. The fan version looks AWESOME! Also, I'm glad they stopped it at three games.
I think Mother 3 ended the series very well, and there's no real need for Itoi to make a Mother 4.

Yeah they should at least release Mother 3 in English first. I mean anybody who WANTED to play it has probably already played that fan translated version, but they should at least release one to be official like and what not
Mother 3 wrapped stuff. It is done. And that's great! Anyone who's played 1-3 and wants a 4th doesn't get it.... I can't imagine that this is anything but a very minor portion of fans.
You have to play Mother 3 to get WHY any sequel to the series would just be blatantly milking the series. As tempting as a new Mother game would be, it would ultimately be unsatisfying in the end.
