Japanese men's magazine Brutus recently posted a four-page interview with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata and Mother (EarthBound) series creator Shigesato Itoi. The discussion touches upon the various emotions and themes that permeate the Mother games as well as the appreciation fans have for the series. It's a meeting of minds brought together by a single topic: a potential Mother 4.

Regarding a bit appears near the end, Itoi mentions that though he wouldn't make another Mother, he wouldn't mind playing a sequel helmed by someone else. It just so happens...

This is obviously a reference to the in-game meals in earthbound and how it needed more chicken strips.
The point I'm trying to make is this: Like the Lord of the Rings, each of the Mother games by themselves were great, but together as a whole, they were absolutely amazing. That required a lot of work by both Itoi and his team, and something I don't think will be achieved again, even if Nintendo made a Mother 4.
The fan game looks (and sounds) pretty rad, though.
I desperately want to explain WHY the story can't continue, but people would hate me for spoilers >:
