Interview reveals Wind Waker Link for Brawl, Final Fantasy VII writer co-plotter photo

Though parts three, four, and five lack the creepy stalker talk that made part two such a delightful read, these latest installments in a series of ongoing interviews between Nintendo of Japan President Satoru Iwata and Super Smash Bros Masahiro Sakurai still yield some interesting information.

Though it's old news now, part three revealed that Kazushige Nojima, co-writer of Final Fantasy VII helped in the writing of Brawl's adventure mode, causing many a fanboy to proclaim "CLOUD CONFIRMED FOR BRAWL!" More excitingly, part Five of the interview actually did reveal confirmation of a new character for Brawl. Sakurai let the info slip in answering a question about the development of the game's character designs for when he said, "Take The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess from the Zelda series for example. We were able to design the Smash Bros. characters by adapting them just as they were modeled for the original titles."

The game hits Japan in just three days. I'm going to miss all this pre-release giddyness.

Thanks, RJG.

just one more confirmation for the supposed full roster, still I'm a little sketchy about some of the other possible characters.

that makes the "fake" brawl roster floating around (the one with krystal) seem a little more plausible. if i remember right wind waker link was in there on the right side.

Young link was my favorite character in melee. He wasn't as strong as adult link but he was very quick. It's too bad there were very few stages that took advantage of his wall-jumping ability.

odintal, what roster are you talking about? That 35 character roster doesn't have Krystal on it. As far as I know, that's the only one that hasn't been proven fake.

If you read the interview you can tell that they are talking about trophies not characters.

Are you sure he confirmed Wind Waker Link as a playable character. From what he said he only mentioned using the model in the game. Taking that quote into context he mentions them whilst talking about trophies. I've seen a WW Link trophy on a video somewhere. I hope I'm wrong, but I would assume the model was used for the trophy and not an actual playable fighter.

I too think he just means WW Link as a trophy, at least that's the way he's talking about it in the interview. He still may be a playable character, but in my mind this doesn't confirm that.

It'd be awesome if he's playable, but for now, I'm unsure if it's more than a trophy.

Also, that character roster is confirmed fake, since it uses previous promotional images for some characters instead of a newly crafted image.

Um... I'm really interested to see what is being written as the "story" of Super Smash Bros, I just want to kick people's asses. And I'm glad they did Cell Link instead of "young link"

I'm pretty sue they're talking about assist trophies, man... plus, I don't think they'd let something slip as easily as THAT. I mean, the video thing, sure, but not in an interview that can easily be censored. So yeah, they're talking about trophies, not playable characters. Too bad T_T

It does NOT confirm Wind Waker Link for Brawl. I love you Jon but every article you've been posting has been wrong information dude! He used the Wind Waker stuff for Assist Trophies and the regular trophies you find in the game, like the Tingle one they show.

Just to reiterate what everyone else is saying, the Wind Waker talk is in the section of the interview titled Trophies and Stickers. All the talk is about how they used original Nintendo assets to create trophies that you can look at from all sides, instead of what you just see of the characters in the regular game. It's pretty clear they're talking about trophies and not playable characters.

Oh that sucks... I wanted this to be true too.

The only thing this confirms is that since "Celda" is a trophy, then he ISN'T a character, which furthermore debunks the recent roster images that have been circulating.

Maybe next time Mr. Road Rules!

@snaileb I wouldn't be that sure. the link trophy that we have seen was of him in his casual wear. Also, you can get trophies of the regular fighters if you remember so I don't see how this says anything about link NOT being a playable character.

Something I did notice though, was that he said "The number of regular characters is impressive on its own, but the number of characters represented by the Assist Trophies is truly something."
By saying that the number of regular characters is impressive on its own means there is going to be A TON OF PLAYABLE CHARACTERS ON SMASH BROS BRAWL!!! ZOMG

I loved me some Wind Waker, and while I am happy they went with Twilight Princess look for Link, I would positively ecstatic if they used Wind Waker Link as a replacement for Young Link. His exaggerated, cartoon-bendy fighting style would be awesome to watch in action in Brawl.
However, in this article they are clearly talking about Trophies, so it does not confirm or deny Wind Waker inclusion. We'll just have to wait for news from Japan after its release.

Am I a bad person for getting excited, then immediately being skeptical when I saw who posted the story? Sorry, Jon. :c

And Wind Waker Link is probably playable. The fact that they have a cel-shader for the Tingle trophy seems like a hint to me. But who knows, Sakurai might just be crazy enough to put a cel-shader in the game just for trophies...

@ LarkOhiya: I'm afraid your struggle with both autism and down syndrome has led you to assume shit. When did I ever say I had a problem with Wind Waker's art style? I was one of the few that was an instant fan of it when it debuted at TGS '02. My problems with Wind Waker have nothing to do with the art style.

I'm sure this post has taken you the better part of an hour to read, so you should probably get back to being a dipshit in life. Thanks.

Really? You think Wind Waker, with it's long-ass fetch quest through the latter half of the game and the long-ass sailing portions made it a better game than TP? I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. Yes, WW has a great art style and is certainly enjoyable, but those two (among a few other iffs here and there) taint the game overall (also, TP's story was better than WW's). I agree with GoldBond. TP > WW

Ooh, a Zelda debate. I have to side with Lark. I thought Wind Waker was the better game. Although Twilight Princess had a much better combat system, I thought Wind Waker just had that something. The atmosphere, the visuals, the soundtrack. They all worked together in a way that Twilight Princess didn't.

And I thought Wind Waker had the better story line. It was much darker than Twilight Princess's, yet the contrasting visuals emphasised it.

Eh, I've never played WW myself, so I can't comment on the games themselves. I'd like to see how they incorporated a cel-shaded Link without making him a 'clone' though.

Really? You found WW's story darker than TP's? I find that pretty surprising.. what with the whole overall darker tone of TP (and I DON'T just mean visually). Also, I found TP's story so much more interesting than WW (or really any other Zelda game) mainly because of Minda and because of the whole "Twilight Princess" story. Minda feels like the most developed Zelda character ever (with Saria in second, I guess..).
Rockvillian's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/28/2008 16:49

Sides with Dan. WW had a classic storybook/legend feel to it which I loved the crap out of. I loved TP too, but the story in that was a little too broad and convoluted for my tastes. I kept forgetting my mission, cause they kept throwing new story devices at me.

*spoilers*
I mean, in WW Hyrule is GONE. Underwater. Drowned. Your sister was taken. Tetra is a descendant of Zelda. Pretty epic.
