Interview/Hands-on: We summon Atlus PR on Persona PSP photo

We managed to visit a hidden Velvet Room last week at E3 and craft a press relations persona that we named Nich Maragos. He came with the spells Bufu, Dia, and Explain. We cast Explain on Persona PSP during battle, and through this we learned a bit more about the upcoming remake of the classic PlayStation role-playing game.

Okay, that was really stupid. Sorry. We had a chance to chat with Atlus to get a peek and some hands-on time with Persona PSP, the Shin Megami Tensei game that kicked it all off for this fan. We talked about what was remade and changed from the original game, including the new art, content, and music. Check out our chat in the video as well as some of my hands-on impressions after the jump.

As for our hands-on time, we started the game from the beginning to check out the changes. Fans will remember the original game's opening sequence, which was really cool for that time. Have you popped that game in lately? The video did not hold up well. Thankfully, the new version has lovely new widescreen video that compares in quality to the videos in the latest Persona games.

In the beginning of the game, characters are now introduced with their Japanese names. They are no longer white (or black) like in the first localization -- now everyone is Japanese, and the game is back to being set in Japan. We were told that the goal is to be true to the original Japanese release.

The battle system has been cleaned up, too, though they're not much different in presentation from the original game. You know what's really different, though? The walk speed in the dungeons and corridors. I couldn't believe how fast you could move through the first-person corridor exploration parts. The overhead city map is also a bit different in presentation, too. Everything has been adapted for the PSP widescreen, and some of the new videos have voice work in them.

We didn't get to see much more past the earliest part of the game, but Persona PSP has been polished up nicely for fans as well as newcomers, and we can't wait to jump back into it again.

So, is this ported from the JP version? I remember the US edition on the PSX was edited... something about a Snow Queen.

When I played Persona 2: EP years ago I didn't wanna shell out the $100 or so for the first one on Playstation, especially hearing that it was heavily edited and frustrating for localization reasons. I am so eager to play the first one as I am ever so slightly partial to Persona 2 over the newer ones. I have been salivating since this was first announced... this has made day-to-day activities difficult.

I have the orignal for playstation, it really is one of the forgotten classics on that system. Tell me, are you still represented on the overworld as a green gem? I always thought that was odd and I was hopinh they would change it for this remake.

I want this so much... I don't want to pay $100 for an incomplete localization of the PS1 original. I have the Japanese version, but it doesn't help that I can't read Japanese. :P

"Okay, that was really stupid."

LOLed. Good timing with that, as you caught me just before I went for the eye roll. A great interview, all the same, and kudos for seeking out Atlus in the first place to get more info on the title.

I might have to dust off my PSP for this one.

Waiting for this one to drop, but if they bring P2 to the PSP...is it gonna be a two-fer? Eternal Punishment plus Innocent Sin?!

God, talk about making fans happy.

@Doomsday - A Persona 2 double-billing would indeed be awesome - I'm not incredibly hopeful on that front, but Atlus has surprised me before (heck, I wasn't expecting this one to be localized), so all we can do is wait and see.

This is the game that's finally gonna make me have to buy a PSP. The original was one of the games that got me interested in RPGs to begin with, so I'm definitely excited about getting to see the game the way it was meant to be seen.

Dale, that intro was so cheesy that it was wonderful. So does that mean they're using the same spell naming conventions (Dia, Bufu, Ari, etc) as Persona 4?

@ DaedHead8: Have you had a chance to try Devil Summoner 2? It uses almost the exact same overworld map style, and it *just* came out. Still a great game, though.

What pedrovay2003 said. Anyone know if this is a localization of the full JP version? I already have the truncated (and nowadays way fucking overpriced) US version.

@Frohike

This version is the uncut Japanese version, complete with new content, and translated completely into English. This is the real deal.

Thanks. I'm in, then. Now they need to bring the never-localized Soul Hackers and I'll be happy ^^
