as far as i've noticed these people spend to much time looking for wrongs against women instead of enjoying the games they play.
i just don't like people who spent their time looking for these retardedly small wrongs when the countries that really need some good old fashioned "feminism" mainly in the middle east get ignored
This woman is a swindler, plain and simple.
overreaction much?
don't worry she probably doesn't want to cut it off, they're not all evil.
my reaction was more because i was a little tired of complaints.
anyone remember the complaints about fat princess? that was a good laugh.
I don't agree with that mindset at all. It seems like the stereotypical head in the sand position. The things she talks about are deeply rooted issues that have been trained into peoples mindsets. She doesn't rant and rave like a man-hating angry person that a lot of people claim she does (not you, by the way). I think a lot of people naturally have a negative reaction to anything called feminist because they are reacting to old stereotypes of feminism created by anti-feminists.
And about the middle-east: being someone who pays attention to these kind of things, there is a lot of talk and a lot of support given to women in the middle east (especially amongst atheist groups). Hell, I've personally written a letter to my old college paper regarding the double standard amongst Muslim men and Muslim women at the school. The problem is that people can't really do much to change foreign nations and the change has to come from withing. And it's starting too.
Well, that was long.
A complete load of useless drivel, anything to get 15 seconds of fame.
I would file a person like this clear in the "scum" category. Absolute shame on you for giving this, for lack of a better term, blatant troll this kind of exposure.
Until someone gets the hits vs integrity balance down its going to be real hard to shake the "your not journalist your bloggers" argument, this article is a stellar example of why it comes up all the time.
I'm also kinda gutted you didn't ask what she thought about annoymous investors throwing money at her woes in an effort to stick to annoymous antagonists - in the end, the amount she recieved really had nothing to do with the show - it was tit-for-tat.
And that's something that concerns me, especially since nobody has looked into that angle.
That is, if they aren't already on her payroll as card-carrying 'bad guys'.
Their schtick would have seemed funnier had they focused on media directed at women (Soap Operas, primetime dramas, romance novels, talk shows, that kind of thing) rather than the tropes that supposedly make unfair expectations out of the male audience in works largely directed at straight men. That way, their goals would be truly equivalent to the Tropes Versus Women project.
well i'm waiting for the time she actually makes her video.
if she donates the leftover money she can say whatever she wants and i'll dance and sing, but if she keeps it she can drop dead for all i care. it's obvious she earned that because off all the assh*les that had to insult her.
i realize she's trying to do good but i can't stand a minute of her previous videos, it's just looking for the bad in everything.
I mean, there are some clear cases of it, but they are very few and far between. This kind of thing is simply unnecessary and often baseless.
She wants Kat (from Gravity Rush) to wear Motorcycle gear and heavy boots? Maybe this is my simple male mind speaking, but get that shit outta here.
And thanks to FF for keeping on.
So you gonna comment and address all the pandering and male hate YOU injected with your own personal feelings and opinions?
To me it always seemed that lots of the media aimed at straight women is more misogynist rather than misandrist.
Couple of points:
1. Complaining about the nymphs being sexy in Rayman Origins is kind of silly considering the fact ancient greek myths of Nymphs are that they are sexy, nubile women who love to sing and dance.
2. The female character in Bastion has a name, Zia, and a backstory. No character is highly developed in that game through artistic choice more than anything. We don't know "The Kid"'s name.
3. Why didn't you direct questions about criticism levelled against her work. Her Bayonetta deconstruction for example exhibited a basic lack of understanding of the game, going as far to call the Angel enemies, clearly labelled as such, as demons and labelling her as a single mother, which she is not. Many accuse her, myself included, of using strawman arguments to make her seem more valid while villainising opposing viewpoints. There's a well made video about that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDtyrK1butI
4. Why did you fail to mention the Misandry in Video Games project that was started in answer to Sarkeesians? It would have been interesting to hear her thoughts and opinions regarding that.
I think you had the chance to ask some more probing questions, and you missed that opportunity. All in all, it's still an entertaining interview.
I would love to see her project transcend the typical feminist narrative and be something less divisive, more thoughtful, and just generally better. But, no high hopes. It will likely be reduced to man bashing and shaming. Like all other projects and articles such as these become.
Yet Anita NEVER addresses the game developers themselves. She just acts as if the characters are seperate entities that go and sell themselves cheap.
Did you happen to think that those bad things are happening to men is because the majority of games have male protagonists? You would need to compare the genre and the ratio, not the number, otherwise it becomes meaningless. Also, qualifying what the 'bad things' are may be subjective.
Tropes do exist for both genders, but she just happens to be doing the one that pertains to women. Much like how games like to pander to men.
Fucking really?
God forbid a woman in a video game have large breasts, that's sexism! Oh, and she can't have breasts that are too small either, because that's sexism too! Don't make her too attractive, or she's just a mindless virtual stereotype! But don't make her too ugly, or that's devaluing and insulting to women! Don't make a woman who has an unrealistic outfit, those show too much skin and are objectifying! But don't cover her up too much or make her look to masculine, or that's taking away the uniqueness of her femininity and shoving her into male gender roles!
I also have concerns that what female gamers (or potential gamers) want isn't necessarily what a feminist would want. Just as Twilight seems very popular with a female audience (and unpopular with many feminists), I think that there are women out there that enjoy some of the tropes like the chainmail bikini. It seems to me that the best way to end many of the gender issues in the gaming industry is simply to encourage more female gamers... and it's very difficult to predict what female gamers actually want. If developers give weight to Ms. Sarkeesian's videos, they may well end up creating female characters that are politically correct, but may not actually appeal to a more mass audience of female gamers and in the end may actually drive women away from the gaming medium.
It's great that she is doing these videos... it's always interesting to see different perspectives, but I do hope that those in the industry remember that this is simply one person's singular viewpoint on tropes vs women in games and not a blueprint for what most women want or don't want.
Still... it's all a wait and see game until the videos are actually produced and the reaction to them.
Thanks for addressing that.
Unfortunatly, this reminds me VERY much of the Ryan Perez scandal.
To quote the "outraged fans" that were apparently heard by Dtoid management "people have to be accountable" "assholes have to stop getting away with sexism" "stand up for we believe in and take this guy down!"
Going on the precedent, we should be demanding and expecting Stephen's termination from Destructoid. The amount of sexism and hate that HE has presented as fact and his OWN opinion is staggering.
"Also, qualifying what the 'bad things' are may be subjective"
Which is exactly why this whole thing is bullshit. She takes an unrealistic and overly reactionary point of view that simply isn't grounded in reality, but in her own delusions as the feminist woman who is victimized and held down by the media. She's going to find sexism in everything, not because it's there, but because she needs it to be to justify her point of view. The fact that she made a ton of money to do this is just enraging.
As for the reason those bad things are happening to men, sure a lot of it has to do with the fact that the majority of games have male protagonists. But let's think outside of the main character roles. Think of all the games where you can commit horrible acts of violence against enemies. Decapitations, severing limbs, even torture. Now think of how many times those acts of violence are depicted as happening to women.
It is more culturally acceptable for a man to be depicted groveling on the ground bleeding to death, but show a woman in the same way and it may be seen as offensive and maybe even "sexist". If that's not hypocrisy, I don't know what is.
You people make me sad.
It's amazing how easy it is to make some people go on the defensive... Why is it that so many people feel so threatened/angered by this? If you don't think it deserves the money, you presumably didn't donate. If you don't like the idea of the series, don't watch it. Simples.
Thank you, Beirne, and keep at it, Sarkeesian!
And a further thanks to anyone in the comments that show support.
In general: I dont know. I grow weary of this topic and yet, for some reason, I continue to keep clicking on articles about sexism/tropes/mysogny. I can recognize this is important, and that I think people should speak their mind when they don't like something so that publishers and devs can see whether there is a market for these people. But the focus wearies and, in some ways, alarms me. Im pretty happy with games as the way they, and strongly suspect characters that won't be offensive to some feminist theory also won't be interesting or fun to play as or interact with.
In conclusion: Stop confusing me! I just want to play some games and slay griffins and evil robots, please!
I have nothing against this woman or her cause, the fact of the matter is she is making money to twist things into sexism, not unearthing sexist portrayals and revealing them to the masses.
