Interplay releases some concept art for the Fallout MMO photo

If there’s one good thing about all this legal mumbo jumbo between Bethesda and Interplay regarding the Fallout MMO, it’s that we now get to see what Interplay is actually doing with the property.

Recently, Interplay’s Chris Taylor released four bits of concept art from the MMO on the studio’s official message board, which requires a membership to access the proper sub-forum. Dated 2008, the images, we’re reminded by Taylor, are not final -- just concepts being used for the development of the title.

As one would guess, these images reveal a post-apocalyptic world rife with fractured buildings and objects sitting on top of a scorched earth underneath a sky blotted by debris. The lone image of a survivor, a dude with hip goggles and a smooth tan jacket, does give off that signature Fallout feel.

As for why these images were revealed, Taylor writes that they’ve been “released due to the lawsuit” in the initial thread about the concept art. In the same thread, Taylor mentions he'll continue bothering the lawyers to release more images, which would makes us happy pandas, as opposed to the sad variety.

So, Fallout MMO -- apparently it's still happening. What do you guys think about these images?

I saw this somewhere else a bit earlier, and this art makes me a REALLY happy panda. I hope they release more soon.

@lolipantsu: Actually, you reminded me of something. I heard a different team is working on FO3:New Vegas, and that a bunch of people on the story/art direction teams are old interplay employees, I'm looking forward to it, and I hope they re-capture the feel of the older games.
FO3 was good and all.. but after a while the game felt kind of meh. I still haven't gotten into the DLC, not counting a level 30 character, mostly because my computer melted on me.

After looking into this from the legal side, I doubt this will help Interplay very much. According to the Beth Suits, Interplay lost all rights to the Fallout MMO IP when they failed to USE it before the 2008 deadline. I can only guess that Interplay Suits are hoping that post dating a few post Apocolyptic drawings consititutes "using" the IP? I doubt a judge will agree, but parallel universe type insanity is always possible in the US legal system...

holy shit does this mean that the next fallout game will have a level cap of (dare I say it?) ABOVE 30?????

Yes, Fallout: Vegas is the true successor, and by that I mean FO3 was not. If you're a fan of the older games, consider the purchase of Obsidian's Alpha Protocol, first.

Yes, Pandaman. Fallout: Vegas is the true successor, and by that I mean FO3 was not. Bethesda's attempt wasn't bad, it just wasn't truly a Fallout sequel. Obsidian is already at work on Vegas, but consider Alpha Protocol while you wait.

Wow, it's November of 2009 and they have concept art. It's going to be a bummer when this thing finally gets released and everyone is bored by it because by that time, the actual apocalypse will have happened. We'll be all: "nah, I used to be really into Fallout, but now I'm all about throwing these rocks, yeah, throwing rocks is really the hip game to be playing now, after the apocalypse"

Fallout 3 gets a lot of hate, but I absolutely adore it.

It's the only Fallout title I've played (I've yet to install the first two games + Tactics), but I'm still open to anything Interplay has to offer.

I just love the Fallout universe all together, and this art makes me mucho happy.

Oh look, it's a burned-out nuclear wasteland. I'm sure glad they released this concept art.

I really hope that Interplay can get the Fallout series back on track, since i think Bethesda ruined the ''feel'' of the Fallout universe. Don't get me wrong i did like F3 but the original Fallout was sill ''feeling'' wise better.

Yeah, Borderlands is an awesome game... oh wait, this is Fallout. No but seriously, I’m really looking forward to this one.

@ Gnime

Interplay is an office of lawyers who spend their time suing. The people who made Fallout are now mostly at Obsidian, and working on New Vegas. You want Bethesda to win so New Vegas stays on track... so, switch allegiances there, brother.

As for the art, it looks decent. Fallout 3 had better concept art in my opinion.

"Yeah, Borderlands is an awesome game... oh wait, this is Fallout."

I see what you did there! How clever! Because there could never be TWO games in the world with a post apocalyptic setting! Exclamation point!

@ StingingVelvet,

"As for the art, it looks decent. Fallout 3 had better concept art in my opinion."

Did you really just compare concept art directly after stating you had a bias for Bethesda?

*rubbing my eyes* sigh... I mean.. come on.

/facepalm

All it is is Interplay exploiting a good franchise(and clinging on to the coattails of Fallout 3s success) for money.

Furnimus - That just made me laugh. Alas, if only any of those existed in the nineties like Fallout did :P

Looks very splendid - love the whole concept of "Guess what? Life's growing again - and it just might skip eating you!" Oh carnivorous plants, I will never forget thee and your embarrassing murder of my character....
